Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Estimable Resident Summoned By Death Mrs. Phoebe Levine Williams-Hackett Once of Emporium's Oldest Residents In our issue of last week we announded the death of this aged resident of Emporium but were unable to get full particulars at that time for an obituary. For the past several years deceased has been confined to her home corner of East Allegany Avenue and Portage Street and has received loving care and attention from her daughter Mrs. Nellie Danforth who has resided with her mother for many years. Death occurred Dec 12, 1915, and was caused by dropsy and a complication of diseases attendant to old age. Deceased was born in Czenovia, Madison County, New York, Sept. 14, 1827, was therefore aged 88 years and three months. She was married to Seymour Saxon Hackett on May 14, 1848. To them were born eight children, six boys and two girls, of which four boys and one girl survive. Mr. Hackettt died about twelve years ago last May. The eldest daughter died May 30, 1881, one son, Delvert was accidently kielled Nov 17, 1906, and the eldest son, Herbert, died Nov 2, 1915, preceding his mother to the grave by just six weeks. No doubt the shock attending his death hastened her end. The surviving sons and daughter are as follows: Theodore N., Robert D., Seth J., of Emporium and Levi T. of Buffalo, and one daughter Mrs. Nellie Danforth, at home. Thirty-seven grand children, for ty-six great grand-children and two great-great-grand-children survive. The funeral was held at the family home Friday afternoon. (illegible word) Leight, of Emporium, Smith of Duke Center, and Bain, of Union City, officiating. The casket bearers were: Alfred Searfoss, Peter Shoup, LK Huntington, William Law, Amos Horning and Byron Jones. Out of town people attending the funeral were: L. T. Hackett and wife, Buffalo; Fred Mason and wife, Renovo; Ben Hackett and wife, Pottsville; Charles Paul and two sons, Kane; Martin Danforth, Wellsville, NY; Miss Dorothy Hackett, Roulette; Mrs. Ella Miller, Olean, (all grandchildren); Mrs. C. C. Cronin and Rev. Geo. Bosworth, Olean; Miss Cora Chilson and mother Mrs. Sarah Chilson, Renovo; David Thomas and wife and REv. Bain, Union City, and Miss Ethel Stanton, of Smethport, Pa. Deceased has resided in Emporium about sixty-six years, almost an ordinary life time and during the entire period has proven a faithful and devoted mother, rearing a large family and devoting her time to their care. Thus Emporium loses in this death one of its first settlers.
