We would never do away with the list! It is just that several county coordinators have been discussing the decline in their use. I remember a few years ago getting 100 + emails a day from the several county lists I had been subscribed to. Today I get 3 or 4 a day from the same group of counties. We were wondering about the decline over all. Just as a comparison from last year: January 2003 216 messages February 2003 227 messages March 2003 114 messages April 2003 101 messages January 2004 76 messages February 2004 81 messages March 2004 69 messages April 2004 22 messages A 60% decline in number of emails from Jan to March! That is significant and the reason for the discussion. Thanks for everyone's input. I appreciate your insight and comments. I would offer that there still are contacts to be made on this list amongst the people who are subscribed. This was proven at last Saturday's Genealogy Club meeting when two long time members of this list discovered a shared ancestor. Other members have discovered mutual relatives at the Club Meeting. I would suggest that the same opportunities are still available on the Email List. There are also quite a few new people on the list as we approach 140 subscribers. So, for those of you actively researching Cameron County I would suggest that you post your ancestors from CC in an old fashioned Roll Call and lets see what shakes out. BTW, the website site is very active..one day last week there were over 100 hits! We will surpass 50,000 hits in a couple of months at the rate we are going now. I just hate to see people miss out on what is available on the email list. I found over 75% of my data from contacts on the email lists! I know that there are more people on this list who are related and do not know it. Happy Hunting! Remember to hit REPLY TO ALL to get your names out to the list. Thanks! Don't even consider doing away with this list! The responses on here have opened many doors and knocked down several brick walls while researching our Cameron County roots. Like several other comments, the Cameron County site is, by far, the most informative, has the kindest listers, and is the most helpful of any around. Even though I don't respond to many of the comments, I nevertheless read them all, hoping that another ancestor might just surface. Mike, you do one fantastic job of maintaining the website, and the e-mail list is an integral part of that. Just wish we lived closer, to participate in all the other genealogical endeavors you are sponsoring. I know I am subscribed to about 7 of them in 3 states and they are all dead. Even Cameron County which was never all that busy, has been dead of late. Someone suggested to ask for input to see if we could figure out what is going on. Are you no longer using the email lists as part of your research? Are the recent virus' effecting the way you use emails? Any other reasons? Is there anything you would like to see done differently? I know that in my personal experience, the Email lists were the main source of finding information about my family lines and the most useful source of information in breaking through brick walls. Now I see email lists that once generated 20-30 emails a day are now down to 1 post every two weeks. Your comments would be appreciated and useful.
