    3. Jack and Mona, Thanks for getting in touch with me. The DeCourcey family is a pain in the #$% to research. different spellings, and seems James and Vida (as of right now) are the only ones who had children. Wait, no.. I may have found James brother Frank and his children (Robert and Betty) Since the family worked on the Rail Roads, they all lived pretty much together (I have census) for a few of the DeCourcey/DeCoursey in the Buffalo, New York area. I have copied the 1920 Census: Katherine (Hout) DeCourcey age 66 and two sons George age 33 and (can't make it out) Dirillo(sp) age 26. Buffalo City, 4th Ward.. Sheet number 11A James and Vida DeCoursey (ages 43 and 41) Harry 19, James 15, Ruth 10. I came across James and Harry WW1 Registrations cards with b-days on it and Vida as (spouse / mother). Buffalo, City, Enumeration District 38 page 14a. Think the street is either oakdale or akdale? Oakdale! Martin DeCoursey age 40 and wife Lucillia age 33 same census as James and Vida just a few lines up. 1930 Census: I have same information of James and Vida, however minus Ruth and add in Virginia. I thought they were the same gal with different names, but you guys are telling me two girls and two boys. Martin DeCoursey (minus his wife) lived with his brother William in Buffalo, 7th ward, sheet 18b Enumeration District 15-90. I do have the 1880 and 1900 census of John and Catherine (Hout) DeCoursey in Shippen, Cameron, PA. I'm also doing SSDI searches on the Decoursey based on est. year of birth that I have. I have found some in Florida and I think the other in Virginia. In fact.. Harry Charles (son of James and Vida) died.. May 07, 1971, Virginia. That's based out of the SSDI. It drives me crazy, this family does. I have more information, and hope to gather more. Hope to hear from you guys! Matthew T. Mona Anderson and I are first cousins - our fathers (William and Jack) are brothers. Your James Charles DeCourcey's wife was Alvida (Vida) Charlotta Extrom (originally spelled Ekstrom) - daughter of Carl August Extrom and Maria Christina Svensdotter. Vida was born in Langaryd, Jonkopings Lan, Smaland, Sweden in 1878 and emigrated to the US with her mother and siblings (Karl Hjalmar b. 12-26-1874; Johan Saloman b. 9-18-1876; and Olga Vilhelmina b. 5/8/1880). Four other children were born in Elk and Cameron County following Maria's emigration to the US in late 1883/early 1884 - still working on this. Her husband CArl August had emigrated three years earlier by himself in 1881 landing in the lumber camps in Sterling Run. Many Swedes and Norwegian "woodsmen" emigrated to the US in the mid-to late 1800's following the cutting and depletion of the forests in those countries. Vida was a sister to Mona's and my paternal grandmother Rosie Almira Extrom Cox. "Uncle" Jim and "Aunt" Vida lived most of their married life in Buffalo, NY. They actually had 4 children: Harry C. (b. 6-2-1900), Ruth (don't have any dates), Virginia (b. abt 1921) and James (b. abt 1904). Jim and his boys all worked for the PRR. This is the one Extrom branch (Vida and Jim) Mona and I have the least information on so we are thrilled to have your connection. I have a group Extrom family photo from the early 1920's which includes Vida and Jim and several of their children along with Vida's parent Carl August and Maria Christina. We would love to share information you as our two older Cox aunts (ages 99 and 94 respectively) are little fuzzy (rightfully so!) on all they can remember about Aunt Vida and Uncle Jim. Mona and I have history on Vida's mother's family (Maria Christina) dating back to the early 1700's in Sweden. Look forward to hearing from you. 3. Matt, Here's more info Mona and our first cousin Bobby Cox/Tempe, AZ dug up last year from the 1930 Buffalo, Erie County, NY census on Jim and Vida's family. Robert (Bobby) Cox is a son of Charles L. Cox who himself is the son of Charles Cox and Rosie Almira Extrom (Vida's sister). Note spelling of DeCourcey (with a C) which is how all our private family records and how our aged 90+ year old Aunts tell us Jim and Vida spelled it: MONA @ 9/10/2003 "Now for something more...snooped around on the 1930 Federal census site that Bobby sent and found DeCourceys in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. As of that census, in the household were James C. DeCOURCEY, age 53, married at age 23. Vida DeCOURCEY (wife), age 51, married at 21. Harry DeCOURCEY, son, age 29, married at age 21 (no wife listed in the household), James DeCOURCEY, son, age 26, single and Virginia DeCOURCEY, age 9. Ruth must have already been married or was out on her own because she is not listed in that household." And here's a follow-up Mona sent me a day later: MONA @ 9/11/2003 "I found this also on DeCourcey's according to 1930 census: James C. was a conductor on the railroad, and the two boys, Harry & James were Clerks with the railroad. Vida had no occupation listed and of course, Virginia was just a child." And yet more information from Mona from the 1930 census: [email protected] 10/6/2003 " James C age 53, married at 23, estimated birth year 1876, born in PA. Vida, age 51, married at 21, born in PA***. Harry age 29, married at 22, born in NY. James age 26 born in NY. Virginia age 9 born in NY. All living at 57 Tuscarora Rd., Buffalo, Erie County, NY as of 4/1/1930 when census was taken." ***Matt - This is incorrect but a common occurrence among immigrants of the period when reporting origins for census takers. Vida was born in Sweden in 1878; she emigrated as a young child with her mother, two brothers and sister Olga in 1883/1884. For example, Olga's obituary says she was born in Johnsonburg, PA [where my paternal grandmother Rosie Almira Extrom definitely was born] but the 1900-1910-1920-1930 Emporium censuses variously say "PA" and "Sweden" as her birth place. I'm tracing down the family's immigration papers now; we know the immigration years from references in their father Karl August Extrom's 1933 obituary published in the Emporium-Cameron County Press Independent. Mona may have the actual Census book and page citations in her records. I took this information from emails which she sent me. I've been through the SSDI myself last year which is where I found some of the information we do have on the DeCourcey sons. Virginia died in Florida. She never married according to my Aunts. Ruth married quite young and according to my 99 year old Aunt Ruth had two children - her married name is not recalled or known to us at this time. I also found some info on what I think are Harry and James' sons in SSDI given that DeCourcey does show up all that much in SSDI for Erie County, NY. I'll have to dig that our for you so we can compare notes and make some sense of this branch. Two sets of eyes (or more!) are always better than one when slogging through SSDI and Census data! Hope to hear from you soon. Jack Cox Arlington, MA 781-646-5574 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matthew T.
