I've spent the morning researching KING family, specifically the birthplace of ggram Mary F HERSHEY, b. 1849, variously listed as in Cameron, Clearfield, and/or Centre Counties. The problem is Driftwood, Burnside Tshp and Drifting, Gulich Tshp. I have papers showing both places. In an obit for Andrew Jackson Hershey, it is stated that he married the Widow KING FISKE in 1860. It is also stated that the Widow had a 10 year old daughter. This would be my Mary, who apparently subsequently took A.J.'s surname. I've been to the archives and can't find a timeline for definite changes of the name, if there was one. Both Driftwood and Drifting appear to be in the same place on maps. Was there a name change at some point in time? Anyone have knowledge of this area, or any ideas.
Hi! There was no Cameron County in 1849, nor is there a Burnside Township in the county. In 1849 I believe Driftwood, Gibson Township would have been in Elk County. Where are you seeing Driftwood and Drifting in the same map? Driftwood has been Driftwood since at least 1795, except for a brief period when it was called Second Fork. Hope that helps!
