Shippen was in McKean County in 1860 and I have not ever seen the census online. Mary Ellen, Thanks again for your extraordinary work. I have been wanting a peek at the 1860 Shippen Twsp census. Do you know where it can be found? I asked but he had no input. Thanks, Peter Huot Sonoma County, CA.

I have been slack in keeping up with new memberships as they come in! I added Surname information from eight recent applications. We presently have 65 members & 118 members on the Email List. The November 1st meeting was well attended with 32 people signing in. We had quite a few visitors who came to the 1940 Tour of Emporium. We showed the 2nd part first and after the meeting we showed the first part...many folks stayed for that. Due to all of the visitors, we did not cover any business. Door prize was one of Ira Collins Royally Rugged Cameron County books. New member John Jordan was the lucky winner. As you know, the Historical Society has voted (unanimously!) to start a Genealogy Club. We will vote on our new name at the next meeting. Those of you who cannot attend, please send me your vote for a new name before the next meeting. As far as I can tell, nothing will change in what we have done in the past regarding the Club, except for membership in the Cameron County Historical Society. There will be added benefits that will become apparent as we move along. A quarterly newsletter will be the first one you will notice...next issue will be out in January sometime. There will be an opportunity to turn in your dues at the next meeting for 2004. I know that some of you may not be joining the Society and continuing your membership with the Club....if you know you will not be joining the Society, please let me know so I won't chase you around and bug you to send in your dues! LOL Thanks! Videos and DVD's of the 1940 Tour of Emporium will be available at the next meeting....the cost will be $19.95. If you want one or more reserved for you, let me know and I will add you to the list. There will be a limited run of these made, so it will pay to reserve copies...these will make awesome Christmas presents for you and your family. There will be extras with the purchase...at least one free pass to the Little Museum and maybe something else yet to be determined. There will also be a limited number of gift baskets made available with an Ira Collins Book, 1940 Video or DVD, pass to the museum, free one year membership to the Society, popcorn, soda and movie candy! I will let you know the cost of these....I believe at least one will be raffled off by the Society. I am still looking for ideas for future meetings. We will discuss which PA State Speaker we would like to request for 2004 at the next meeting. Look for the Refreshment Committee at the next meeting! I found an 1867 Septennial Census for Shippen Township which I hope to have online soon. I had never heard of such a thing before...there may be others for the other Townships, but I did not see them. There will be a new website for the Club for 2004 linked from a new website for the Cameron County Historical Society...details to follow! I am going to add a section to cover the CCC Camps in Cameron County. I have photos from the 1936 Yearbook that has the histories and rosters for the camps. I also have a couple of post cards to add. If you have any photos or anything that you would like to see in this section, please let me know Thanks! Can someone who has access to the 1920 Census for Huntingdon County look up a John Morey 22-25 years old possibly living in or around Alexandria possibly near or with a McAteer family. Would also be interested in the occupation of M. J. McAteer. Thanks!! Mike Wennin Come Visit the Cameron County Genealogy Project! http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero
Mary Ellen: Perhaps out in the countryside and in farmland these house numbers are less relevant than in the towns. In tracing my wife's FINK relatives in the city of Bradford, McKean County, PA, I did in fact find a direct correlation between the house numbers listed on an individual head of household's enumeration line within each census page and the perpendicular inscription of the actual street name on the left hand margin of the page. The verification for this was in the newspaper obituaries which, 40-50 years ago, included the home address of the recently deceased. Today our newspapers no longer print these addresses because in larger cities predators would rob the homes while the bereaved family was attending the funeral, etc. But my E-mail is simply to add a footnote to your discussion and observe that, at least within the larger towns, the house numbers often do in fact reflect the true street address numbers. Best Regards, George Stevens, Fort Washington, MD.
Hello George: None of those names are in my line. I am researching Cleary (Clary), Hogan, Credigan, Powell, Mage(e), Lyons, Carney (Kearney), Holland, Connor(s)all ca. 1860-1910. I have covered all of Cameron County for the area of Emporium. But have interest in the bordering counties. Including McKean and Elk. My line is so full of missing info and misinformation that tracking has been extremely hard. I have a death cert. which appears to have the parents names completely wrong, can not find any paper trail on a Jennie Connor(s) born ca. 1874. I think a lot of my gaps are due to the destruction of the 1890 census and the church in Emporium which lost a lot of early records in the fire which destroyed the original church. If you should happen across any of the above names, I would be pleased to hear from you. Good luck on your own lines! Diane: Within Cameron County (and nearby McKean County) PA am researching FINK (out of Otsego County, NY) and allied families (POLK/PAULK, LILLY, KREBS, DUNHAM, WYCOFF, MILLER, CAMP), ca 1875-1975. Are any of these lines of interest to you? Regards, George Stevens Fort Washington, MD
In answer to Diane Perkins' question. HS is house number, DW is dwelling number, and FM is Family number. Sometimes there are two families living in one dwelling - a duplex, for instance. In all the censuses I have transcribed, I do not ever remember seeing house numbers indicated. I do believe the dwelling number is arbitrarily assigned as the enumberator went from house to house. Hard to say if he went up one side of a street and then down the other side or, if he went back later to a home if there was no one at home to answer his questions. All in all, I don't thnk these numbers are really significant to the census. Mary Ellen Smith _________________________________________________________________ Is your computer infected with a virus? My research in Cameron is pretty much finished unless some more new discoveries are made for prior to 1924, especiallly the period of 1870-1910. I wanted to tell all of you that this is one of the best genealogical home pages around resulting in one of the most complete site for county records around. You are to be congratulated!! For my own edification, can anyone tell me what the abreviations starting at the left margin of the early census years mean ie HW? The next number appears to be assigned to the order in which the residences' information was taken. Thanks in advance Diane Perkins __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Mike, Congratulations on your appointment to the Historical Society's BOD. Yes, it is a new day! Hooray!! A thought on Dick Baldo's shop in the interest of historical preservation....would it not be even better to get the owners to also donate the original building itself and then move it and its contents to the Historical Society's grounds?? It's not that big; it would easily fit on a tractor trailer flat bed, and I suspect there are still a few folks in town who know how to move a (small) building...and I know there are more than a few trucks around capable of holding it...In return, offer to build a replica of the original building on the owners in-town lot or provide them fair compensation so they could build whatever type of replacement structure they wanted???? Maybe it's a pie-in-the-sky idea and maybe the cost would be prohibitive (somehow I don't think so) but I think it is worth pursuing especially if the Society would build a replacement structure anyway to house the shop's contents...maybe students in the manual arts classes at the high school could take it on as a project and the Emporium Foundation could be cajoled into helping with the project by making a contribution to the Society to help defray some of the costs...and what about asking the Foundation to make a contribution (seed money for equipment and supplies) to the Historical Society to help it launch some of the desperately needed archiving and researching initiatives we've all recommended and discussed??? Or using the shoe shop project as a catalyst for community fundraising (money, donated time and services, etc.) for the Society and its goals? Again, just another thought to add to the kettle... Again, congratulations on both your BOD appointment and on receiving the shoe shop's contents. The previous owners showed the building and contents to me last summer. It is really neat! I remember going there as a kid and it is all exactly the same. I'm sure my mouth was gaping as I looked around. I loved it!! That's great that it was donated.
