Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Old Veteran Answers Last Taps Joshua John Bair Passes Away at His Home on Fifth Street Last Friday Afternoon Joshua Bair for the past forty-nine years a resident of Emporium and a veteran of the Civil War died at his hime on Fifth Street, ansering the final call of taps at two o'clock Friday afternoon, Dec. 17th. Had deceased lived until Sunday, Dec. 26, he would have passed his sevety-second milestone. The familiar figure of deceased will be missed from our streets by a great, great many in the community. Several years ago he retired from active work and since that time has been more free to visit with friends and to work in his garden, a pasttime which he greatly enjoyed, although not having good health. Mr. Bair was jovial and alsways ready to spring a joke and to enjoy one. For several months past he has been confined to his home and those hear and dear ro him realized that the end was near so that when the angel of death came it was not unexpectedly. Joshua John Bair was born in Lancaster, Pa, Dec 26, 1843. At the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a private in Company L, Second Pennsylvania Regiment, Heavy Artillery. Aftehr the war Jan 7th, 1868, he was married at St. Marys, to Miss Mary E. Schmondt, they immediately settled in Emporium, where they have since made their home. His widow survives him and also the following children: Albert, Jersey Shore, J.M. and Lena, Olean; William, Mrs. B. Egan, Mrs. P.H. Burke, Mrs. R. Green, Emporium, Mrs. Bertha Fobert and Julia, at home. There are also three brothers surviving: John Bair, York, Pa, Elmer and Jacob Bair, Philadelphia. The funeral was held Monday morning, at nine o'clock from St. Mrak's chruch, Rev. Father Dennis Curley officiating. The casket bearers were Hon. F. X. Blumle, A. A. McDonald, J.H. Ste[jems. H. C. Ken;y, Joseph Kinsler, Sr., and A. F. Vogt. Interment was made in St. Mark's cemetery at this place. Deceased was a charter member of the local C.M.B.A., and a member of the D. W. Taggart Post, G.A.R. No. 241. Those attending the last sad rites from out of twon were Albert Bair and wife, Jersey Shore; J.M. Bair and wife, Olean; Miss Lena Bair, Olean; John Weisman and children, Olean; Miss Marie Schriever, kane; John Dippold and wife, Anthony Dippold, Miss Kate Dippold, Mrs. Joseph Seth, F.Yeager, St. Marys; Miss Lillian Donohoe, Mt. Morris, N.Y., and Albert Miller, Olean, N.Y.; John Bair, York, Pa.; Ben Bair, S. Uncle, Joh Catlin and wife, Renovo. [Note added by transcriber: other siblings of Joshua Bair survived him in addition to those named in the obit.]
Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Summoned to Benezette Mrs. Alton B. Housler was summoned to Benezette, Tuesday, by a message announcing the serious illness of her father, William Jordan, who resides at that place. It is not expected that he will survive. Mrs. Housler surely has her share of grief as her mother is now in a serious condition at that place, having suffered two paralytical strokes.
Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Estimable Resident Summoned By Death Mrs. Phoebe Levine Williams-Hackett Once of Emporium's Oldest Residents In our issue of last week we announded the death of this aged resident of Emporium but were unable to get full particulars at that time for an obituary. For the past several years deceased has been confined to her home corner of East Allegany Avenue and Portage Street and has received loving care and attention from her daughter Mrs. Nellie Danforth who has resided with her mother for many years. Death occurred Dec 12, 1915, and was caused by dropsy and a complication of diseases attendant to old age. Deceased was born in Czenovia, Madison County, New York, Sept. 14, 1827, was therefore aged 88 years and three months. She was married to Seymour Saxon Hackett on May 14, 1848. To them were born eight children, six boys and two girls, of which four boys and one girl survive. Mr. Hackettt died about twelve years ago last May. The eldest daughter died May 30, 1881, one son, Delvert was accidently kielled Nov 17, 1906, and the eldest son, Herbert, died Nov 2, 1915, preceding his mother to the grave by just six weeks. No doubt the shock attending his death hastened her end. The surviving sons and daughter are as follows: Theodore N., Robert D., Seth J., of Emporium and Levi T. of Buffalo, and one daughter Mrs. Nellie Danforth, at home. Thirty-seven grand children, for ty-six great grand-children and two great-great-grand-children survive. The funeral was held at the family home Friday afternoon. (illegible word) Leight, of Emporium, Smith of Duke Center, and Bain, of Union City, officiating. The casket bearers were: Alfred Searfoss, Peter Shoup, LK Huntington, William Law, Amos Horning and Byron Jones. Out of town people attending the funeral were: L. T. Hackett and wife, Buffalo; Fred Mason and wife, Renovo; Ben Hackett and wife, Pottsville; Charles Paul and two sons, Kane; Martin Danforth, Wellsville, NY; Miss Dorothy Hackett, Roulette; Mrs. Ella Miller, Olean, (all grandchildren); Mrs. C. C. Cronin and Rev. Geo. Bosworth, Olean; Miss Cora Chilson and mother Mrs. Sarah Chilson, Renovo; David Thomas and wife and REv. Bain, Union City, and Miss Ethel Stanton, of Smethport, Pa. Deceased has resided in Emporium about sixty-six years, almost an ordinary life time and during the entire period has proven a faithful and devoted mother, rearing a large family and devoting her time to their care. Thus Emporium loses in this death one of its first settlers.
Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Arthur M. Pettitt, of Emporium, and Miss Jennie M. Howlett, of Sterling Run, were united in marriage on Wednesday evening, Dec. 22, at the M. E. parsonage, by the pastor, Rev. J.H. Morgart.
Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Local Man Married Miss Lottie Moore, of Sterling Run, became the bride of Perl Timlin, of this city Tuesday morning, at 9:00 o'clock, the ceremony being performed at the former place. They will make their future home at Emporium, where the froom is employed. St. Marys Enterprise.
Emporium Independent, Thursday morning, Dec 23, 1915. (Vol 49, No. 26) Death Claims Popular Young Man William Howard Jr Died Last Sunday Night in a Hospital at Vancouver, B.C. Word reached Emporium Monday morning that William Howard, Jr., had died in a hospital at Vancouver, BC, at which place he had been since last summer, at which time he went there in company with his father to look after mining interests. Relatives at the place received word the latter part of the week of his serious condition and his brother Whitley accompanied by his aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Howard, started at once for Canada to be with him but he died before they were able to reach his bedside. Little news has been recieved, as yet, as to the sickness and death but we understand that at the time he was first taken ill he was some distance from Vancouver and as soon as the serious nature of his illness was made manifest he was at once removed to the hospital where it was found that he was seriously ill of typhoid fever and in the endeavor to save his life skilled physicians performed an operation ont he intestines but death occurred almost immediately afterward evidently from the effects of the operation. The relatives will accompany the remains to Emporium, leaving Canada today (Thursday) and arriveing her Monday or Tuesday. No definite arrangements have yet been made for the funeral. William Howard, Jr.. was born in Emporium, March 15th, 1894, and was therefore twenty-one years of age. He was a son of Burgess W. H. Howard, a graduate of Emporium High School, and a young man generally liked, having a merry disposition and pleasant ways of winning friendship. Only a little over a year ago his mother was accidentally killed in an automobile accident and now the father is again made sorrowful by the death of his eldest son. Deceased is survived by his younger brother Whitley, his father, W.H. Howard, aunt, Mrs. Elizabeth Howard, and uncle, Hon. Josiah Howard, all of this place. We extend sincerest sympathy to the bereaved family whose Christmas had been made a sad one by the untimely death of this loved one.
Yesterday I found an old box marked "snapshots" in my mother's closet. I took it down, and it was full of miscellaneous things, but the very best part was an envelope at the very bottom which contained the whole "Emporium Independent" newspaper from Dec 23, 1915 with my great-grandfather Joshua Bair's obituary on the front page. There was also a whole page from May 1920 when my grandfather Patrick Burke was killed in the dynamite explosion, and other clippings. One of the clippings was from the 50th anniversary of Emporium Schools (1939) and it listed every member of every class for the whole 50 years. Do you have all the names now Mike, or are you still missing some? If you need any class, let me know. I will type some of the info from these papers for the list, and if Mike wants to add any of it to the website, go for it. What fun I had going through that box! Cathi
