    3. The DAR has a web page and will search for patriot names that may be in their database. The search is free but I think that it costs $10 to get the copies. They also have a published patriotic indexes in some public libraries, though I don't believe that our library does. They may be able to tell you where to look for it or get it on interlibrary loan. I think it just gives minimal information probably the same as the online search. 3. While I was clearing out my mother's apt. (she went to the Grove House), I came across a suede pouch with The First National Bank , Emporium, Pa. printed on the front. Can anyone date this for me? It looks quite old. I do know the old Library went into the First Nat. Bank building, but I don't know if they moved somewhere from that point or not. Any info? Bernie

    3. This is very interesting, because I came to a stumbling block in my research on my mother's side of the family and my aunt told me she had the information but (can you believe) said she would not give it to me. She did say, she was a member of the DAR. She lives in St. Marys and if I could find the chapter she belongs to, maybe I could get the info I am looking for. Probably Dubois chapter. This information was given by Mrs. David Powers of Cortland New York, a daughter of Amos' child Sarah. This information was given by Lewis J. Bennett, great-grandson of Amos, in 1917 when he was 84 years old, and sent to Mrs. Estelle Dexter Wright to help her trace her lineage to an American Revolutionary for the purpose of becoming a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Amos Bennett of Locke, Cayuga County, New York was a soldier and served as a private in the 14th Albany County New York State Militia, Col. Knickerbockers Regiment in Captain Abbott's Company, as stated in the "History of New York in the Revolution as Colony and State." Amos Bennett received his final pay for Revolutionary war services at Hassick New York, January 17, 1786. Below is an extract from J. R. Simons history, "The Frontiersman of New York", Vol 2, pages 586, 587, and 588, relating the arrest of John Parker, a celebrated Tory spy, in 1782 by Capt. Amos Bennett, 3rd Regiment Tryon Co. Militia. Before the close of the Revolutionary war, Amos moved from Albany County to Scotchbush, Montgomery County, New York, where he resided when an Indian raid was made by Sir John Johnson, son of Sir William Johnson on the Mohawk Valley settlers October 25, 1788, burned their houses, destroyed their crops and captured many of the people and took them to Canada as prisoners. After the war Amos moved into the town of Locke, Cayuga County, where he died about 1830. The Moravia cemetery where he was buried was in part washed away July 31, 1833 and all trace of his death was destroyed. His daughter Sarah Bennett Einne was buried in that Moravia Cemetery that was saved and marked by a tombstone. Extract form J. R. Simms history, "The Frontiersman of New York", vol.2, pages 586-588, relating to the arrest of John Parker, a celebrated Tory spy, in 1682 by Capt. Amos Bennett, 3rd Regiment Tryon County Militia. "The Arrest and Execution of John Parker, the Johnstown Spy--One of the most interesting events which transpired in the vicinity of Johnstown in the Revolution, was the capture of John Parker. He was brought up in Philadelphia Bush, and went to Canada at an Early period of the war. In 1851, Frost Howland lived on the old Parker place. John Parker, had from the beginning of the war, been one of the most daring and most active partizans, who had followed the Johnson family to Canada. Often had he been on the frontiers of New York, sometime in the character of a spy, and at others in that of an open foe -- his energies all bent on the injury or destruction of his former n neighbors and friends. He had a constitution fitted to endure all manner of hardships, and an exposure to all kinds of weather: which enabled him to traverse the wilderness at seasons the most unpropritious, and steal into the settlements when a foe was unexpected -- to find a resting place at the dwelling of some Tory friend, where he might recruit and gain desired information: but he came one time too many." 1. Re: [PA-CAMERON] preserving old newspapers
    2. Hi, Quite some years ago there was a Hint from Heloise regarding "liquid milk of magnesia freshens newsprint." I have not tried it. This may help. Dear Heloise: A while back, there was a hint in your column for preserving newspaper clippings. I used that recipe for years until they changed the formula, and now the milk of magnesia tablets do not dissolve in club soda. You are supposed to let it sit overnight to dissolve, but I waited three or four days, and they still would not dissolve. Answer: You are absolutely right. The original hint from my mother's column back in the 1960's said to use liquid milk of magnesia, not the tablets. After calling a manufacturer, we found that there are three different types of tablets today, and none of them will dissolve in club soda. The recipe for preserving newspaper clippings and keeping them from turning yellow does specify using liquid milk of magnesia. Mix 1 quart of club soda with 2 tablespoons of liquid milk of magnesia. A key step is to put the solution in the refrigerator for eight hours before using. Use a shallow pan that's large enough to hold the clippings. Put only one clipping in at a time and let it soak for an hour. Remove it carefully and place it between several layers of white paper towels (to remove moisture). Be sure to let it day on a clean, flat surface. That's all there is to the magic formula. P.S. Please note that today's newspapers are printed using different amounts of recycled paper, and your results might vary.

    2. Cathi, This fall my daughter and I were in Hudson, New York researching our tree. We visited a DAR chapter house. They had books which listed all members. If you find your aunt listed there, you can write for a copy of her application which shows how she proved her line. Some larger libraries also have the books. There is also a DAR site (use google to find it) that tells you how to send for copies of applications and where you may find the books. Hope this helps you. Barbara

    3. I think most of the smaller chapters, like Emporium and St Marys, dwindled away. The nearest chapter is Dubois or Bradford. I thought about joining at one time but it seemed like a bit of expense so I put it off for at least a few more years.
