If I am not mistaken....the runs are actual creeks and the Hollows are land formations, some of which have creeks in them. Mike, would someone please ask him how the records can be obtained by those who do not live close enough to take advantage of either the meeting or the courthouse. Thank you, Yvonne
Just a reminder that the Genealogy Club will meet this Saturday at 1:00 PM at the Library. Our Guest Speaker will be County Prothonotary, Dave Reed who will discuss the historical records available from his office. Historical Society President, John Kautz may also address the group. The meeting has been advertised on Channel 9 and in the Endeavor, so, providing the weather holds out, we may have a nice turnout. Looking forward to seeing you there! I will have the church records for St. James Catholic Church of Driftwood tomorrow afternoon. I plan on copying as much as I can and will do look-ups for anyone interested. I also found a list of unmarked graves for Oak Hill/St. James Cemetery in Driftwood that I will be adding to the site. Regarding the microfilms in the library, if there is no allowance for repair of the microfilm machine in the library budget, why can't the Geneology Club, and the Historical Society conduct a survey of members who may want to contribute to funding the machine repair? I, for one would be more than happy to make a contribution to this effort. I imagine there are a lot o other members who would do likewise. This may be one idea to pursue. What good is it to have these valuable microfilms, without the ability to reference them? Jay Klock
Mike: You are doing a wonderful job & are one of the best as far as getting things done to help researchers I have seen in a LONG time. You are out there seeking new sources for research everytime we turn around. I wish we could clone you & send you to some of these other genealogy groups (they ask for 3 & 4 times the amount of your dues & you got a guest speaker 8 or 9 times a year & their web site leaves a whole lot to be desired). I am refering to the group I belonged to back Home. You would be a real asset to this group. The thing that got to me the most was the way the Historical Society & the Genealogical Society worked together...... They Didn't! As I have told you in personal e-mails this is the best site I have been to in a long time & that this group has a lot to be proud of; ALL of you work together for this cause & IT SHOWS. I spoke with the person who has these records and he is willing to loan them to me as soon as he can find them. (Yeah, I know!) I will let you know when I do. I will plan on making copies and getting the information online once we have it. I will let you know when I get them and will do look-ups. Not sure of a time frame yet. Mike Wennin Come Visit the Cameron County Genealogy Project! http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero
We have talked several times about the microfilms of the Cameron County Press that may or may not be at the High School Library. I spoke to the librarian recently and she told me that she DOES have the microfilms, but the microfilm reader does not work. Apparently, she has put the repair or replacement of the reader in her budget but it was not approved. She also has the bound hard copy of the Cameron County Press back to the 1930's. At this time, they are not available to the public was she is concerned as to the condition of them and how they would stand up to being leafed through. She is afraid they are too brittle and feels that their preservation are her responsibility. I told her of the Historical Society's plan to build a Genealogy Library and got an indication that these resourced could be turned over to the Society. She did not come out and say that, but indicated it may be a possibility. So there is the stuff on this ever changing story! The following article will be in this weeks local papers...it is presented here for those of you not in the area: In response to the charge made by former Historical Society President Frank Geleskie to bring in new blood and to expand the organization, Society President John Kautz and the Board of Directors have been meeting monthly working towards that end and there is much to show for it. Back in November the Board voted to "adopt" the Cameron County Genealogy Club at the request of the Club membership. As of January 1, the Club is now a part of the Historical Society. Club Director, Mike Wennin, said that this move will eventually add 70+ members to the Society. The Club voted at it's last meeting to be called The Genealogy Club of the Cameron County Historical Society. It meets the first Saturday of each month at the Library. The next meeting will be Feb. 7th at 1:00PM. The guest speaker will be Cameron County Prothonotary, Dave Reed who will discuss the historical records that are available from his office. Everyone is welcome to attend. (Historical Society President, John Kautz will also address the group.) The Board also voted to reproduce the 1940 Tour of Emporium movie and the response from the Community has been exciting. The first two shipments of videos and DVD's sold out with in a week or two. The next shipment has just arrived and are once again available at the Library. The Board would like to thank the Library Staff and Marylee Keefer for assisting in the sale of the videos. They would like to remind those of you who purchased the movie, that the sale price included a one year membership to the Society and would remind you to send your application in. Since the October Fall meeting, the Society has gained over 80 new members, bringing the total to over 200 members. One Board Member's personal goal is for 500 members by the end of 2004. He says that they will need that many members to gear up for the Sesquicentennial in 2010 and to accomplish the goals of the Society in the near future. You are invited to join! Send your check for $5 to Suzie Murray, 311 Howard Circle, Emporium, PA 15834 It has been brought to the attention of the Board that the Little Museum may be one of, if not the last standing Sears, Roebuck Simplex Sectional Two-Room School Houses in the country. If so, there may be some excitement generated in those circles who are interested in Sears Homes. At least one author and Sear Homes expert is anxious to come and see it. Another author is planning to visit the Museum this Spring and include it in her next book on Pennsylvania Museums. There are plans in the works to promote the Museum out of the area since most of the visitors to the Museum come from out of state. This promotion will be done through articles in magazines, links on the internet, and word of mouth. The goal is 1000 visitors for the 2004 season. A Spring Spruce-Up of the Museum is also planned. In the works are the acquisition of the contents of a local landmark- details to follow; a companion book to the 1940 video that will identify as many people as possible in the video; a reprinting of the Flood of 1889 book and possibly the 1942 Flood book; cataloging the contents of the Little Museum onto a computer; a website promoting the Little Museum; a new color brochure about the Little Museum to be used to promote the Museum in the surrounding areas; inviting a speaker from the Pennsylvania Humanities Council to talk about researching your Pennsylvania Roots; rotating displays of Museum artifacts at the Library and at the Courthouse; working with the Schools to involve our children with their Heritage; and much more. The Society now has a newsletter called The Voice. It was named after an Emporium newspaper from the 1920's. The next issue will be out in March. It is planned that the newsletter will eventually become a quarterly journal of Cameron County History and Genealogy. Also planned for March will be a general meeting of the Society to discuss goals and plans for 2004 season and the future of the Society. Once again, you are invited to join the Society and be a part of the excitement! Mike Wennin Come Visit the Cameron County Genealogy Project! http://www.rootsweb.com/~pacamero
[email protected] is being used to send a zipped file that contains a worm or other virus. I am getting returned mail notices from addresses that are not current. They do not seem to be going to anyone I know, nor to people subscribed to the list, but may have originated from someone on the list who at one time sent email to the request address to subscribe. Rootsweb seems to be aware of this and says they cannot do anything to stop the use of the forged emails. Just thought I would send out a heads up and make sure you do not open any email from that address. If you are subscribed to this list, you may want to check your computer for virus and worms. I'll send this once again. I keep forgetting this email site doesn't accept stationary and I have to delete it each time. So, without the mumble jumble of the last email, I am looking for a street scene of Morris and Vaughn and Brown's Boot shop which would be early 60's or late 50's. If anyone would have a photo from a parade or something in that order, it may be on it. I have searched the yearbooks, etc. and so far no luck. I have even contacted the Vaughns after all these years, no luck there either and now they would like a copy also. Please search your old highschool or childhood photo albums if you think you may have one! Thank you. Bernie
