John, I have a Florence Hacket, born 1882,from Emporium,Pa.,daughter of Theodore and Jennie, married to Joseph L. Mason. They were living in Renovo, Pa. in 1915 and 1925. That's all I know. Is there any connection to your Mason's? Barbara Hackett
Matt, Here's more info Mona and our first cousin Bobby Cox/Tempe, AZ dug up last year from the 1930 Buffalo, Erie County, NY census on Jim and Vida's family. Robert (Bobby) Cox is a son of Charles L. Cox who himself is the son of Charles Cox and Rosie Almira Extrom (Vida's sister). Note spelling of DeCourcey (with a C) which is how all our private family records and how our aged 90+ year old Aunts tell us Jim and Vida spelled it: MONA @ 9/10/2003 "Now for something more...snooped around on the 1930 Federal census site that Bobby sent and found DeCourceys in Buffalo, Erie County, New York. As of that census, in the household were James C. DeCOURCEY, age 53, married at age 23. Vida DeCOURCEY (wife), age 51, married at 21. Harry DeCOURCEY, son, age 29, married at age 21 (no wife listed in the household), James DeCOURCEY, son, age 26, single and Virginia DeCOURCEY, age 9. Ruth must have already been married or was out on her own because she is not listed in that household." And here's a follow-up Mona sent me a day later: MONA @ 9/11/2003 "I found this also on DeCourcey's according to 1930 census: James C. was a conductor on the railroad, and the two boys, Harry & James were Clerks with the railroad. Vida had no occupation listed and of course, Virginia was just a child." And yet more information from Mona from the 1930 census: [email protected] 10/6/2003 " James C age 53, married at 23, estimated birth year 1876, born in PA. Vida, age 51, married at 21, born in PA***. Harry age 29, married at 22, born in NY. James age 26 born in NY. Virginia age 9 born in NY. All living at 57 Tuscarora Rd., Buffalo, Erie County, NY as of 4/1/1930 when census was taken." ***Matt - This is incorrect but a common occurrence among immigrants of the period when reporting origins for census takers. Vida was born in Sweden in 1878; she emigrated as a young child with her mother, two brothers and sister Olga in 1883/1884. For example, Olga's obituary says she was born in Johnsonburg, PA [where my paternal grandmother Rosie Almira Extrom definitely was born] but the 1900-1910-1920-1930 Emporium censuses variously say "PA" and "Sweden" as her birth place. I'm tracing down the family's immigration papers now; we know the immigration years from references in their father Karl August Extrom's 1933 obituary published in the Emporium-Cameron County Press Independent. Mona may have the actual Census book and page citations in her records. I took this information from emails which she sent me. I've been through the SSDI myself last year which is where I found some of the information we do have on the DeCourcey sons. Virginia died in Florida. She never married according to my Aunts. Ruth married quite young and according to my 99 year old Aunt Ruth had two children - her married name is not recalled or known to us at this time. I also found some info on what I think are Harry and James' sons in SSDI given that DeCourcey does show up all that much in SSDI for Erie County, NY. I'll have to dig that our for you so we can compare notes and make some sense of this branch. Two sets of eyes (or more!) are always better than one when slogging through SSDI and Census data! Hope to hear from you soon. Jack Cox Arlington, MA 781-646-5574 ----- Original Message ----- From: "Matthew T. Read this in today's newspaper: The VA has made it easier and faster to get answers about family history, old war buddies or a famous war hero. They put 3.2 MILLION records on the Web for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. It also has records for some state cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. The site includes names, dates of birth and death, military service dates, service branch and rank if known, cemetery information, and grave location in the cemetery. The site is updated daily. It also hopes to add records for veterans whose families requested grave markers from the VA. Those markers may go to private cemeteries or cemeteries overseas. The site address is: www.cem.va.gov
One of my collections is the Joseph Mason/ Martha Grugan related family lines. This collection numbers over 11,000 names, not including over 4,000 names related to the various Shaffer's (various spellings) in the area. I'm attempting to compile as much information on this Mason family line as I can for the 100th Mason reunion in 2008. I'm always looking for additional information, updates and corrections on various family branches. Any assistance would be appreciated. J.P. Sitnik & family
