Sunday, September 25, 2011, Akron Beacon Journal, page B7, Akron, Summit, OH William E. “Bill” Sawyer William E. ''Bill'' Sawyer, 83, of Kent, died Friday, September 23, 2011 at his residence. He was born May 13, 1928 in Kent, to Edward Peter and Mary Elizabeth (Conrad) Sawyer. Bill attended St. Patrick Elementary School and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1946. Following graduation he volunteered for duty during World War II and served three years in the Air Force in Boca Raton Florida. In 1960 he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kent State University in Industrial Technology. Bill married his wife the former Florence Amodio in 1959 and resided in the house he built. He was employee by Flintkote Pipe Company until 1978 then spent the remainder of his career working in all type of construction. He retired in 1997 and kept busy maintaining his children's homes, helping at St. Patrick Church and the Dussell Farms in Brimfield. He was a member of St. Patrick Church and the Knights of Columbus. Bill's leisure time was filled with woodcarving, crossword puzzles and reading. He is survived by his children, Martin Sawyer of Kent, Mary (John) Guzan of South Euclid, Joe (Bonnie) Sawyer of Bozeman, Mont., Frances (Brad) Shelton of Lexington, Ky. and Edward L. (Mary) Sawyer of Rocky River; and; seven grandchildren; brothers, Ben Sawyer of Willoughby, Jim Sawyer of Kent, Donald Sawyer of Berea and Dick Sawyer of Kent; sisters, Agnes Sawyer of Conneaut, Jane Bradfield of Kent and Mitzi Lenzo of Kent. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence E. Sawyer; and sister, Margaret Kaminski. Calling hours will be held 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, September 26th at Bissler Sons Funeral Home. A Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 27th at St. Patrick Church in Kent. Burial will be held at Standing Rock Cemetery. She was born November 22, 1933, in Kent, to Edward Peter and Mary Elizabeth (Conrad) Sawyer. Jane attended St. Patrick Elementary School and graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1952. Following graduation, she earned a Bachelor degree in Education, Majoring in Art, from Kent State University. Jane married her first husband George Shaffer in 1956 where she bore her four children. Jane taught elementary English and Art in Pennsylvania and in the Ravenna School District, worked in various movie theaters and later became a Marketing and Survey Researcher. She was a long time passionate supporter and served on the Board of the Portage County Boys and Girls Club. Early in her life she served as President as a Local PTA, as well as serving as Den Mother and Troop Leader. Jane enjoyed singing in choirs, and in later years, traveling with her family. She is survived by her children, Greg Shaffer (Theresa) of Fairfax, Va., Gerry Shaffer (Becky) of Quaker City, Carrie Shaffer of Ravenna, and Henry Shaffer of Monument, Colo.; six grandchildren; brothers, Ben Sawyer of Willoughby, Jim Sawyer of Kent, Donald Sawyer of Berea and Dick Sawyer of Kent; sisters, Agnes Sawyer of Conneaut, and Mitzi Lenzo of Kent. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Bradfield, brother, William Sawyer and sister, Margaret Kaminski. Friends will be received Thursday, October 20, 2011, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wood-Kortright-Borkoski Funeral Home, 703 E. Main St., Ravenna, where funeral service will be officiated by Pastor David Ballert on Friday at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at Standing Rock Cemetery.
