    1. [PACAMBRI] Riffle
    2. First thank you Perry, for starting this investigation of the Riffle family. It has added a great deal of information to my family tree! I want to provide some comments on the eight 1820 census families and probably throw a new log on the fire. Some background as far as I am aware. Catholic Riffle families first appear in the Lehigh county area of Pennsylvania in pre revolutionary time. The families spread out into Berks Northumberland and Snyder counties and progress into then York now Adams county. In Adams county they fall under the influence of the Conawago mission and Fr. Galitzen. As the result there is a further movement into Fayette, Somerset, Bedford , Westmoreland and Cambria counties, With New Baltimore Somerset county becoming a focal point. Many Riffles buried there at St Johns, New Baltimore. You can look at the map and see a crescent of Riffle families with three major Catholic anchor points Loretto, New Baltimore, and Latrobe. (St Michael, St John and St Vincent) Some comments on the 8, I insert them after each of Perry’s listings. 1) Andrew Riffle Germany TWP Adams CO - 1 female btwn 10 - 20 I see him but I can not yet place him in the tree. 2) Barnabas Riffle (I believe this is the one that married Margaret his 1st cousin) Jenner TWP, Somerset Co. - 2 females btwn 10 - 20 No this is Barnabas married to Margaret Diefendall, Barnabas played a roll in the founding of St John in New Baltimore per the church history. His descendants tend to be found in Westmoreland 3) George Riffle (I believe this is John the Hatters brother) Chillisquaque, Northumberland, PA - 3 females btwn 10 - 20 See below 4) Jacob Riffle (probably Lutheran and not the Jacob that married Catherine Conolly) German TWP Fayette, CO. - 2 females btwn 10 - 20 Agree there were members of the reformed church at Littlestown, Adams county named Riffle. Have not fit them into the puzzle, always a possibility of a conversion for marriage and a disowning. Interfaith marriage was a family breaking issue then. 5) Jacob Riffle (married Catherine Conolly) Jenner TWP Somerset PA. This couple is listed on many trees as the parents of Mary Catherine born 1811/1812 but they were married in 1817 according to the Souvenir of Loretto records. I have found at least one entry in those records that I believe is incorrect for another family.- 1 female btwn 10 - 20 Jacob and Catherine are buried at New Baltimore. I am not quite sure if the 1820 census is this Jacob. In 1850 He and Catherine are in Napier Twp Bedford but Napier and Jenner Twp are both centered on New Baltimore for a Church at that time, thus the burial. 6) John "the Hatter" Riffle - Milton Brgh Northumberland - 2 females btwn 10 - 20 See below. 7) Joseph Riffle - (also likely the brother of John "the Hatter") Chillisquaque, Northumberland, PA - 3 females btwn 10 - 20 See Below 8) Melcher Riffle - Germany TWP, Adams Co. - 2 females btwn 10 - 20 This is the father of the Barnabas that married his cousin. This Barnabas is my GGG Grandfather, and Melchior my GGGG Grandfather. THE SEE BELOW: (the new log on the fire) Methias Riffle (Jr.) Methias Riffle Jr Birth 1762 in Macungie, Northampton Leigh Co, Pennsylvania, USA Death 1820 in Chilisquaque, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, USA This is the father of George, and Joseph and possibly John. I also have only three children associated to Mathias at this point George, Joseph and a daughter, Martha. I strongly suspect that there more children and they probably include John and Mary Catherine?? Interestingly George eventually moves to Fayette, possibly also tying Jacob (your Lutheran) to Methias as well. Methias lived in York/Adams county in the Littlestown area for a good part of his life, only going to Northumberland late in life possibly to live with his son??? (tax records and Conawago data)Joseph goes on to Ohio and dies there, as does Martha, I cannot see that she married (Methias senior is buried at Mt Joy Twp Adams County)Mike Sent from Mike's Windows Mail
