I only have a slight touch to the McMillen and Riffle families, so I don't have them sorted or organized. I could easily have errors listed and would appreciate any comments. Has anyone sorted them all? I did not have the baptism of Susan Jane McMullen. Just missed that one. Sure looks good to name a child after her grandmothers (Susan Logan McMullen & Jane Mariner Riffle or aunt Jane McMullen). I am one who has Hugh, husband of Catherine Riffle as the son of Samuel McMullen & Susan Logan. This is based solely on the will of Samuel McMullen of Allegheny Twp. Samuel's will has some more of those slight touch surnames, so I'm hoping some list members can shed some light. I added a bit in [brackets] for plain text message. Corrections please. I do believe Sam & Susan as parents will be proved to be incorrect after sorting all the children of James & Ann (Donoghue) McMullen. Will of Samuel McMullen - Abstract - Wife Susan gets the family farm that Sam purchased from Henry J McGuire, he the administrator of the will of Daniel Delozier, deceased. He also gives her the houses and lots he purchased of the Sheriff of Cambria County in Loretto. After his wife's death, he gives all his personal property to his daughter Margaret [I don't think she married] and son John [I don't think he married and I think he needed a caregiver]. He also mentions granddaughter Margaret Morris and greatgrandson Samuel Morris to care for son John. He mentions his daughters Jane [married Arthur McDermitt] and Mary [married Thomas Kelly] and sons James [married Rebecca, the adopted daughter of James & Maria McDermitt] Hugh [married Catherine Riffle OR NOT] and Alexander [married Catharine McGuire]. I mentioned Sylvester Weakland's wife Catherine Riffle was strongly connected to John Riffle of the Summit. He is the fella with a vanity bio stating he is the son of John & Jane (Mariner) Riffle. I did find the will of John Riffle, the son. He is in the 1850 census with parents John & Jane and sisters Catherine, Emily & Elizabeth. Abstract - - John Riffel, d 1904 ______________________________ Last Will & Testament of John Riffel Third I direct that my body shall be interred in the Cemetery attached to the Catholic Church at Summit, Cambria County, Pennsylvania in the lot owned by me. And that my Executor expend about the sum of thirty dollars for a tombstone, and have the same placed at my grave. Forth I direct that my Executor shall pay the sum of one thousand Dollars ($1000) to the pastor of St. Aloysious Catholic Church at the Summit, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, for masses to be said for the repose of my soul and that of my beloved wife Margaret Allen Riffle, deceased. No mention of Mary Catherine Riffle McMullen as his sister. Was she the sister deleted before the seventh item? I thought he also might be related to George Riffel who moved to Blair County. _____________________________ Final notes for this post. Hugh McMullen in the 1830 census Tell Twp, Huntingdon Co is also in the 1840 census. This leads me to believe Tell Twp is not Hugh McMullen married to Catherine Riffle as the McMullen-Riffles are in Cambria Co Pa by 1835 and in the 1840 Cambria Co census. However, it is not unheard of to be enumerated in two locations. A fella named Hugh McMullen is godfather to some of the grandchildren of Samuel & Susan (Logan) McMullen after 1825 & before 1835. I can see that Hugh, son of Samuel, is not out of the county then and is not such a good candidate for the husband of Mary Catherine Riffle. That is unless he was frequently visiting home OR Hugh & Mary Catherine were in Cambria Co and just decided not to marry or baptize their children at Loretto until James b 1835, bp 1837 OR the early records of this family are on lost pages. In the 1850 census, Hugh & Catherine have farms very near to Charles [son of James & Anna] & Julia; Matthew [son of James & Anna] & Evaline; James [son of James & Ann) & Susan. Did James & Ann split the big farm & give it to 4 of their sons? I don't know how many children they had. That might help solve the puzzle. McMullen who married Sarah Nagle (marriage witnessed by Elias Barnicle and Margaret McMullen). Susan Jane is not found in later census reports so she may not have lived long. I have not yet obtained the records for Rosana or Martha listed on the 1850 census. As per the census Rosana was born in 1830 (I've seen other researches quote November 1830 but have not seen the christening record). All of the information up until this point validates that the Hugh that died in 1890 is not the son of Samuel McMullen and Susan Logan but the son of James McMullen and Ann Donoughe. Here is the census report for Hugh and Catherine for 1830. They were together in 1830. By 1840 this Hugh and Catherine had relocated to Clearfield and lived next to his brothers Matthew and James McMullen. Name: Hugh Mc Mullen [Hugh McMullen] Home in 1830 (City, County, State): Tell, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania Free White Persons - Males - 20 thru 29: 1 Free White Persons - Females - 15 thru 19: 1 Free White Persons - Under 20: 1 Free White Persons - 20 thru 49: 1 Total Free White Persons: 2 Total - All Persons (Free White, Slaves, Free Colored): 2 This obviously means that they met by 1830. In 1830 John the Hatter was still in Northumberland PA and can be found there on the census reports. The history account states that he does not arrive to Cambria County until 1832. John did have 2 female children under 10 on the 1820 report, but I do not have birth documents for them at this time. As for the other two Hugh's - here is the obit for one of them: FROZEN TO DEATH - Hugh McMullen, a blacksmith by trade, was frozen to death, on Wednesday night, 13th inst., on the road leading from Altoona to Wapsononock, near the latter place. Democratic Standard, Hollidaysburg, Pa., Wednesday, January 27, 1864 The other one died in 1887. Both of these Hugh's who died in 1864 and 1887 are buried in St. Michaels in Loretto. The on-line record indicates that one of them was married to Mary Catherine Riffle. I'm not sure where that came from. The only documented information I know of for the Riffle name connection on Mary Catherine Riffle is from the Souvenir of Loretto records. Also from another researcher - -- IN -- ST.
