Linda and Sharon, I am descended on my mother's side from John William Fritz (Anglicized from Johannes Wilhelm) who lived on Railroad St. and ran a hotel/saloon before the Flood. My records show 7 children. "John" is the only one for whom I have no dates at all, but I did find the following: 1889 City directory lists: "Fritz John Jr. wagonmaker, r 337 R.R. st, o h 714 Horner st." (o.h. indicates owns house) Family history reports that as the flood hit, they climbed to the roof of the house. (I think it was the house on Horner St., but I'll have to check.) As the roof floated away, it split in half: The three sisters on the one half died, all others on the other half survived. One of the survivors was my mother's grandfather, Charles (Karl) Adolph Fritz. At some point he was swept into the water, and eventually grabbed onto the branch of a tree along the edge of the torrent, to which he clung until the waters receded. One of his sons (also named John William) was my mother's father. An interesting note, my mother's brother was ALSO John William, and one of his daughters is Linda Fritz!
