Cambria Herald, Ebensburg, July 18, 1894 The Local News Joseph M. Libby, a native of Maine, but a resident of Cambria county since 1858, died at his residence, near Hastings, on the 9th inst., aged 84 years. Hastings News [same issue] J. M. Libby, one of the oldest settlers in Elder township, died at the residence of his son A.[dolphus] D. Libby, on Monday at the age of 84 years. Deceased had been ailing for some time. His wife [Eunice], aged 86 years, survives him. Note: Mr. Libby was a lumberman and at one time lived in Chest Springs, which was originally a lumbering village. He was buried in the Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Chest Springs. Mrs. Eunice Libby became a Catholic and was buried at St. Benedict's Cemetery in Carrolltown. They had two sons, Adolphus "Dolph" and Dr. David Libby, and one daughter, Maura. Dr. Libby was a Civil War Soldier, a physician in St. Boniface and later moved to Hastings. The farm was long present Rt 36 near Lantzy's Mill. There was a Libby School, a hill named Libby Knob and there is still a Libby Road. Marilyn Kline Washington
