Cyril Yeckley Victim of Vietnam Action March 13 Marine Pfc. Cyril T. Yeckley died Mar. 13 at a military hospital in South Vietnam of wounds received while on a search-and-clear mission earlier that day, according to the Defense Department. The Marine's widow, the former Donna Shilling of Hastings, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Yeckley of Sunset Road, Carrolltown, R.D., were informed of his death last Sunday by 2 U.S. Marine Corps officers. Body Wounds Fatal A telegram, received by his widow on Monday, said that Pfc. Yeckley, who was 23, had died at the 1st Medical Battalion Hospital near Da Nang of fragmentation wounds of the body. He was serving with Lina Company of the 3rd Battalion of 5th Marine Division. Pfc. Yeckley was cut down by exploding enemy rounds while on a patrol four miles southwest of Hoi An in Quang Nam Province, the telegram stated. The soldier had been in Vietnam for only 2 weeks. Pfc. Yeckley joined the Marine Corps in July 1968. He received basic training at Paris Island, S.C., and advanced training at Camp LeJeune, N.C. He was a graduate of Cambria Heights High School, Patton. Home for Christmas He was home on leave in December and left for California New Year's Day en route to South Vietnam. Before entering the Marines he was a coal miner for the Barnes & Tucker Co. He also had worked for the Ray Westrick Farms, Patton R.D. In addition to his widow and parents, Pfc. Yeckley is survived by four sisters and two brothers. The serviceman's widow is expecting their first child soon. Union Press Courier, Patton, PA, MAR 1969 Vietnam Hero Marine Buried Tuesday Morning Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in St. Bernard's Catholic Church, Hastings, for Pfc. Cyril T. Yeckley, 23, Hastings, formerly of Carrolltown, who died March 13 in South Vietnam. Interment took place in St. Benedict's Cemetery, Carrolltown, where miilitary (sic) graveside rites were conducted by a Pittsburgh unit of the Marine Corps. Pfc. Yeckley was born Oct. 20, 1945, in Carrolltown, a son of Gerald and Helen (Harwood) Yeckley. He was the husband of the former Donna Shilling of Hastings. In addition to his wife and parents, the following brothers and sisters survive: Mrs. Betty Haluska, Nokesville, Va.; Mrs. Grace Beltowski, Thompson, O.; Mrs. Ruth Smith, Patton; Mrs. Irene Kotrick, Topeka, Kan.; Gerald Jr., Alexandria, Va., and Mark, at home. A graduate of Cambria Heights High School, he was a member of Bakerton VFW and Local 1269, UMWA. Friends were received at Easly & Easly Funeral Home, Hastings.
