Wissinger Ernest E. "Ernie" Wissinger, 96, of Homewood at Martinsburg, formerly of Box 809, Altoona RD 5, died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 at Homewood. He was born July 23, 1906, in Altoona, a son of the late Clarence and Laura (Lord) Wissinger. He married Ruth McFarland in 1925 in Altoona. Mr. Wissinger was a member of First Church of Christ, Juniata Gap, for more than 50 years. He retired in 1989 as owner of Wissinger's Supermarkets, which was founded in 1945. He previously was a produce selector at A&P Warehouse. Mr. Wissinger completed grade school, then in later years he completed a correspondence course to receive his GED. He enjoyed tennis, reading and meeting people. Mr. Wissinger was a member of Altoona Rotary Club and Altoona Kiwanis Club, served on the Board of Directors at ABCD Corporation, Blair County Chamber, Blair County Easter Seals, Salvation Army and Altoona YMCA; he was very supportive of the Altoona Public Library and institutions of higher education. He was the first recipient of the Blair County Advocacy Award. Surviving are a son, Don and his wife, Flossie, of Hollidaysburg; six grandchildren: Dr. Scott Wissinger of Saegertown, PA., Donna R. Wissinger of Lutz, Fla., Dr. Jane Wissinger of Plymouth, Minn., Janice Meadows of Hollidaysburg, Brenda Conway of Hollidaysburg and Dr. Diane Hodgson of Carbondale, Ill.; and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Kenneth C., George A. and Francis H. Wissinger; and two sisters: Martha L. Benden and Janet M. Worley. Friends will be received from 2 to 5 and 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept 3, 2002 at E. MERRILL SMITH FUNERAL HONE, INC., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, and from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 4, 2002 before the service at First Church of Christ, Juaniata Gap. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002 at First Church of Christ, Juniata Gap, with Pastor John Collins officiating. Interment at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery, Altoona. Ruth E. Wissinger, 87, of Box 809 RD 5, died at 5:31 a.m. Thursday, April 6, 1989, at Altoona Hospital, following a brief illness. Mrs. Wissinger retired as co-founder and secretary-treasurer from Wissinger’s Markets after 43 years service. She was born Aug. 4, 1901, in Altoona, the daughter of Charles and M. Ellen (Deeter) McFarland, and March 29, 1925, in Altoona, married Ernest E. Wissinger. Surviving are her husband, a son Donald E. of Altoona, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A sister, Ethel Brubaker, died Jan 5, 1989, and a brother, Charles McFarland, died Feb 2, 1989. Mrs. Wissinger was a member of First Church of Christ, where she belonged to the Sunday School Class 11. She was a choir member for 63 years, teacher and superintendent in the junior Sunday school department, and a church trio member. She was a volunteer at the Van Zandt VA Medical Center and Altoona Hospital, a member of the Christian Professional Business Women’s Club and the Quota Club, past member of the Choral Society, and was treasurer for Girl Haven. She was honored by the YWCA in 1987. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the Warren H. Replogle Funeral Home. WISSINGER -- Services for Ruth E. Wissinger, of Box 809, RD 5, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Church of Christ, Juniata Gap and Good Shepherd roads by the Rev. Carl Al Alexander. Interment at Alto-Reste Par.
