STROKE IS FATAL TO CONTRACTOR Gallitzin Jan 8 - CHARLES A CHIRDON, aged 78, expired at noon yesterday as a result of a stroke he suffered three days earlier. Mr. Chirdon had attended mass in St. Patrick's Catholic church on Saturday morning and upon returning to his home he suffered a stroke. A resident in Gallitzin fifty-six years, Mr. Chirdon spent his entire life in Cambria county. He was born May 16, 1862 at Eckenrode Mills, the son of Michael and Susan (Delozier) Chirdon. He was united in marriage on May 30 1882, to Miss Mary McMullen of St Augustine, in St. Patrick's Cathlic church in Gallitzin. His wife, a daughter of Charles A. and Molly (Ivory) McMullen, died June 15, 1918, since when Mr. Chirdon had resided at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs Thomas F Ratchford of 621 Tunnelhill street. Surviving are five sons and one daughter, Charles Chirdon of 709 Eighteenth street and Daniel Chirdon of 1510 Fifteenth street, Altoona, Lewis Chirdon of El Paso, TX, Dennis Chirdon of Phoenix, AZ, Albert Chirdon of Hollywood, CA, and Ella, wife of Thomas F Ratchford of Tunnelhill. Thirty-two grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren survive, along with four brothers and two sisters, James Chirdon of Akron, OH, Michael D, Jesse, Peter and Anna, widow of Joseph Moyer, all of Altoona, and Mary, wife of Alex Marlett of Gallitzin. Three sons and three daughters preceded him to the grave. Mr. Chirdon, who followed carpenter contracting for over sixty years, was actively engaged in his occupation, until stricken Saturday. He was one of the oldest members of St. Patrick's Catholic church, Holy Name Society, Gallitzin volunteer fire department and the Tunnelhill Rod and Gun club. At one time he served as a member of the Tunnelhill borough council and Tunnelhill school board.
