He was born March 5, 1917 to Richard Paul and Helen Marie (Weiss) Luckner in Altoona, Pa. He is survived by his wife, Helen Marie (Wissinger) Luckner; his son and daughter-in-law (Carl) Joseph and Melanie Luckner; granddaughters, Marcette and Aleen Luckner; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Alex Hackbart; his sister Kay Conrad; brother Karl; and extended family in the San Diego and Altoona, Pa. areas. He played several sports at Altoona High School. He was quarterback on the football team for four years. He also played handball, swam and bowled. After graduation he joined the navy. He was serving aboard the U.S.S. Whitney, in Pearl Harbor, on December 7, 1941. He was Chief Petty Officer, machinist-mate at the time of his discharge in 1946. He Married Helen Marie Wissinger before his discharge. The Luckners moved to San Diego where Richard pursued college and a commercial fishing career. Richard joined Solar Aircraft in 1950 as a machinist, and retired from Solar twenty- nine years later. He was a member of the Solar Camping Club, Solar Retirees, Solar Rock Hound Club and Solar C. B. Club and Solar Camera Club. He was a member of a bowling league and Pearl Harbor Survivors, Carnation Chapter. He had been a member of Bethany Lutheran Church since 1956, where he served in varied leadership capacities. His memory will be treasured, by many, for years to come. In lieu of flowers: Contributions May be made to Bethany Lutheran Church, Richard Luckner Scholarship fund (for seminary students and others) 2051 Sunset Cliffs Blvd San Diego 92107.
