    3. Hi Virginia, Here is a good place to look http://www.jaha.org/FloodMuseum/survivors.html This link will take you to " Survivor Stories of the Johnstown Flood" on the Johnstown Flood Museum Website. While there may not be a list of orphans here, there should be at least one. 3. Virginia: My grandfather, Conrad Raab, was orphaned in the 1889 Flood, losing both parents. I have never seen a list of people who were orphaned by the Flood. 3. A number of organizations have been digitizing newspapers and books out of copyright. Project Gutenberg http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page Penn State University libraries http://digitalnewspapers.libraries.psu.edu/ Take a look at the Civil War newspaper collection The Library of Congress http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn84024546/1889-06-01/ed-1/seq-1/ One of the newspapers digitized is the Pittsburg Dispatch (provided through Penn State). If you want to read the story of the Johnstown flood as the news came out on June 1, 1889, start with the above link and move forward. Pages are available for download in either pdf or jp2 (new version of jpg, need to investigate what software is needed). I've skimmed 3 books written in 1889-1890, and David McCullough's book published in 1968, trying to find a passenger list for the individuals on the Day Express out of Pittsburgh. Still haven't located one, although between individuals reported killed and individuals interviewed after the flood, could create a list of at least half the 100-110 individuals on the train. One of the conductors said he had a list that was given to a railroad manager. Under the advanced search method, might be able to find articles relating to children orphaned by the flood and what happened to them. > To: [email protected] > From: [email protected] > Date: Sun, 10 Jul 2011 08:57:25 -0400 > Subject: Re: [PACAMBRI] orphans of 1889 Flood > > Virginia: > > My grandfather, Conrad Raab, was orphaned in the 1889 Flood, losing both parents.
