    3. The Tribune, Hastings, PA, FRI 30 NOV 1894, VOL VI., NO. 45 Page 1, Column 2 Mammoth Bank Robbery The National Shoe & Leather Bank at Broadway and Chambers street, New York, has been robbed of $354,000 by Samuel C. Seely, one of its bookkeepers, and Frederick Baker, a depositor. Seely fled a week ago Saturday, leaving a confession in his lawyer's hands. It is supposed that he fled by steamship. Baker was drowned Saturday, afternoon at his country home at Sand's Point. There is little doubt of suicide. Baker who was a supposedly wealthy and respectable lawyer in that city, past sixty years of age, had told his accomplice before the latter's flight that he was to old to run away himself and would stay and face the music. It is alleged by Seely that Baker got all but $11,000 of the stolen $354,000. The thefts have extended over a period of ten years, and were accomplished by means of fictitious balances, false credit, and corresponding debits entered in the ledger. Seely tampered with more than a hundred accounts, it is believed, and credited the money debited upon them to Baker's account, and the money was drawn out of the Bank by Baker. Seely was implicity(sic) trusted. His salary was $1,800. He had been employed in the Bank since 1880, and the United States Guaranty Company was on his bond for $7,500. Seely's method of stealing may be illustrated in this way: The depositor Baker, who was in collusion with him, would present a check, any of $200, to the paying teller, who would ask the bookkeeper if Baker's account was good for that amount. Seely would reply "Yes," even though Baker had not a dollar in the Bank. Seely then would credit Baker's account with an amount sufficient to cover the check, and amount so placed to Baker's credit Seely would charge against the account; say of John Jones. The paper debit and credits balanced each other, and so the cash balance at the end of the day would not show the transaction. When it became necessary to balance the account of John Jones, Seely would draw (on paper) from another account, as he had done from Jones', and so on as far as became necessary. It is estimated that he did this with more than one hundred accounts. Later NEW YORK, Nov. 26-The doors of the National Shoe & Leathe(sic) Bank were opened this morning, just as unconcernedly as though the institution had not been recently plundered of $353,00 by one of its trusted bookkeepers. :"We are prepared for any emergency," said one of the Bank Directors to-day. "We stand prepared to pay out every dollar of our indebtedness just as soon as it is called for, but idications are that we will not be very hard pressed." The sons of the Late Fred K. Baker, insists that their father's business record was immaculate, but it is absurd to charge him with complicity in Seely's wrong-doing, as he had no deposit in the Bank and left no papers as evidence that he had ever had any transactions with the institution. On the other hand, the Bank officials assert that Baker had been a depositor for the past thirty years. - - - Held Up. One day last week John Zeek and brother drove from Altoona to St. Agustine(sic), in Cambria County. Wednesday evening, as they were returning home, at a lonely point of the mountain road between Buckhorn and Dripping Springs, three men appeared at the side of the road and ordered the travelers to halt. One of the highwaymen made a dash for the horse's head, but Mr. Zeek whipped up the beast and passed by just a little too quickly for the would be robber to catch the bridle. The highwaymen continued to cry "halt," but the occupants of the buggy paid no attention to them and continued on their way. - Altoona Tribune. - - - Death of an Old Resident. On Saturday at his home in Carrolltown, Peter Hoover, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of Northern Cambria County, passed from life at the great age of 73 years. He had been in feeble health for some time past and on several occasions his death had been expected.

    3. The Tribune, Hastings, PA, FRI 30 NOV 1894, VOL VI., NO. 45 Page 1, Column 1 CAMBRIA TEACHERS MEET Large Number at the Opening of the 28th Annual Institute. EBENSBURG, Nov. 23-Ebensburg presents an extremely animated scene today, in strong contrast to her usual staid and solemn appearance. The presence of 305 school teachers, representing the instructors of Cambria County, and more than three-fourths of these bright-eyed, vivacious ladies, could not fail to stir up any county seat, no matter how sleepy. The morning train consisted of four coaches, filled to overflowing with teachers, and there have been constant additions to the number since. The morning was spent in taking out membership tickets and finding boarding places. At 2 o'clock the courtroom was filled to the doors, and the organization of the Institute was begun. Superintendent Leech's face wore a pleasant smile as he mounted the platform and addressed the assembly, welcoming the teachers, and referring with especial pleasure to the large number present from Johnstown. The election of officers was next in order. Professor Leech is President ex-officio, and Professor F.B. Ott, of Johnstown, and Professor Sanderson, of Morrellville, were elected. Vice Presidents; Misses Ella Wilt, of Dale Corough(sic), and Mary Cooper of Westmont, were chosen Reading and Recording Secretaries, respectively, and Prof. T.L Gibson was re-elected Treasurer. Superintendent Leech then announced that the work on exhibition at the Institute would, thanks to the courtesy of the Ebensburg Directors and teachers, be displayed in the Ebensburg schoolhouse. Superintendent J.M. Burkey, of Somerset County, was introduced, and spoke on "Aim in teaching." He was followed by Dr. Phillips, of West Chester Normal School, and Prof. Brumbaugh, of Juniata College. State-Superintendent Schaffer arrived on Tuesday. The exercises of the afternoon were enlivened by music under the direction of Prof. Gibson, two readings by John R. Clarke, who was the lecturer of the evening, and vocal solos by J. Lisle Apple, of Indiana. Prof. George Little, of Washington, D.C., gave an illustrated talk on "Free-Hand Drawing." Prof. Little, instructed some eight or ten years ago in Ebensburg, and is known to many of the older teachers. Mr. John R. Clark, the lecturer of the evening, by request, gave a recitation-the "Lorry-Doolan and His Irish Jaunting-Car." In the evening after music by DICH-lo's Orchestra and a solo by Prof. Apple, who, being encored, sang "Anthony and Doris," Mr. John R. Clark, the lecturer of the evening, was introduced by Mr. Leech, and entertained the large audience by his lecture, "To and Fro in London." London stands on 78,000 acres of land. The fogs of London were aptly illustrated by the story of the Irishman who answered the boast of his English friend that the "sun never set on the British Hempire(sic)," by the statement that it never rose either. Mr. Clark was born in London. He spoke against the attempts of people from other shores to "foreignize America." London Bridge was graphically described. The follows, vices, and virtues of the denizens of London were painted in vivid colors. - - - A Swindler Convicted. Edward M. Hastings, on trial in the United States District Court at Philadelphia on the charge of using the mails for a scheme to defraud, was convicted Tuesday afternoon. Sentence was deferred. Hastings swindled a large number of lumbermen in different parts of the country by purchasing lumber from them and never paying for it and selling the lumber for less than the cost as fast as it was received in Philadelphia. - - - Notice I still have quite a number of unsettled book accounts of the firm of Yothers & McNelis. All accounts not settled by December 1st, will likely be sold at auction to the highest bidder some time during the month of December. R.J. YOTHERS. 10-26-1m

    3. I've been using George Warholic's Blacklick (http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~pacblack/interest.html) site for a long time. His index to the Johnstown papers is invaluable to my research. But this morning, while searching for an obit, I noticed a new section of index's. Now there are indexes to the marriage announcements of the Johnstown papers. How did I miss this? This is a form of marriage index from 1885 to present. Granted not all marriages had announcements published, but a good number of them did. Again my hats off to George, Pearl Brosch, Jim Wagner and Ron Dillon for a great job. Happy New Year and good hunting in 2013!! Jack

    3. Someone asked about the Sibert family and I just found this article. He ran a garage that sold new cars, and supplied the driver's ed. car at Hastings Elder HS through 1960 when the school merged to form Cambria Heights. After that three of his sons ran the garage. There was a second Seybert family in Westover, but they came from Syberton, near Chest Springs. The parents of a large family died, leaving dependent children who were adopted by various Clearfield County families around Westover. North Cambria News, Hastings, PA, May 16, 1935 HEART ATTACK FATAL TO JOHN SIBERT John Sibert, prominent business man of this place, died at his home on Beaver Street at 4:30 O'clock Monday evening, death being attributed to a heart attack. Mr. Siberts had lain down for a nap, When Ms. Sibert went to arouse him about 5 o'clock life was apparently extinct and when a physician was summoned, he announced that death had probably occurred a half hour before. John Sibert was born in Homer City, Indiana County, January 25, 1882, the son of Adam and Sarah [Lilly] Sibert, both deceased. He came to Hastings when he was but a small lad, and had resided here since. Mr. Sibert was always prominently connected with the business affairs of Hastings and was interested in the civic welfare of the community. At one time he was manager of the Hastings Opera House, which post he held for a period of 12 years. He later became proprietor of the Hastings Auto Company. On January 1, 1926, Mr Sibert assumed the office of Burgess of Hastings for a four-year term. Before his election as burgess, he served as a member of Borough Council for 11 years. At the time of his death, he was in charge of the Sibert Garage. Mr. Sibert held membership in the Eagles, Loyal Order of Moose and Woodsmen of the World lodges. On November 23, 1899, Mr. Sibert was united in marriage with Miss Josephine Lacour, of Houtzdale. Mrs. Sibert and seven children survive: Edward, of Colver; Hazel, a member of the faculty of the Hastings Public Schools, and William, Dorothy, Pauline, Robert, and Donald, all at home. Surviving also is one grandson and a brother, William Sibert, of this place. The funeral was conducted this [Thursday] morning with a high mass of requiem in St. Bernard's Church at 9 o'clock. Burial was in the church cemetery. Marilyn Kline Washington

    1. [PACAMBRI] Fischer McGuire Tree on World Connect
    2. Patricia Hamill
    3. Hi, Due to the number of DNA matches my siblings and I have after testing with FTDNA and 23&me, I have posted a partial tree of my Fisher McGuire Gedcom on World Connect. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=pattie2&id=I372 Tree Name: Fisher McGuire Family 1 I have compiled information for 25 years and thus it may contain a few errors [I've tried to my best effort to keep it correct]. IF anyone would like to review the this tree and if you find an error please call it to my attention and I will correct. If you do find an error it would be wonderful if you also supplied the document/source as to the correct information. Thus I can simply make a full correction instead of just omitting the error. Over the years, I have jumped the pond on several lines including the FLICK, HAID, BISHOPS, and HERTZOGs. I could not have done this without the work of others over the years and I have wanted to share this information as others have shared their work. I still have the films at my local Family History Center. The Haids were a real surprise for the Priest had kept Family Group Sheets on each family and had noted the source [i.e. baptism, marriage, or death] found in his Parish Books. He would also make notes such as "1839 Amerika" -- I about fell out of my chair at the microfilm machine when I came upon this located on the last part of the last roll containing the Parish Book Records. If you wish for more information on these records, I will be happy to share. I would like to put together an excel file of my findings and can sent that as well. Currently I am working on my Polish films from Znin District, Poland for the Zielinski Line and have almost completed. I can ! start on one of the others once this is completed. Please note: I do not read Polish, German, French, or Latin -- so please use as clues till you verify. I have had wonderful help at my local FHC from volunteers who do read these languages and Old German Script. These records are generally in a pattern and I was guided till I got the "hang" of each film. I can't say enough good things about all those who have guided me over the years. Because of potential errors, I have been very shy about sharing publicly. I posted this Tree a few months ago and I have to admit thus far it has not been a happy experience [one responder - one was enough to make me feel very sad]. So I decided to take the bull by the horns and ask the wonderful folks on this site -- to review and if we find that my Tree is not "good enough" to posted online, I will remove. Happy Holidays, Pattie

Andrew Pier, OSB, wrote this book about his childhood in or near Blandburg, Reade Township, Cambria County. He wrote it and sent it as a gift to subscribers of a religious monthly, The Ava Maria. The magazine was put out by St. Andrew's Abbey in Cleveland. Someone asked about this book. I think I have a copy that I got from a bookstore in Chapel Hill, but I can't find it now. If I find it, I will mention it. If you want a copy, you could probably contact the St. Andrew's Abbey. Fr. Andrew studied for the priesthood at St. Andrew's Slovak Benedictine Abbey in Ohio. He had a brother, Joseph, also a priest, who served locally in the Altoona Johnstown Diocese, as I saw his obituary. Their parents were emigrants and his father was a miner. They were Wendell and Anna Pier. Father graduated from the Reade Township High School, now part of the Glendale School District. He also had a brother Steven and a sister, Mary. Michael ran a hotel and the McQueeny ran the hotel after he died. I just found this obit. Johnstown Democrat McQUEENEY -- Robert, 61, Hastings, died Feb. 23, 1989, at Altoona Hospital. Born Aug 26, 1927, in Akron , Ohio, son of William and Gertrude [Ruggles] McQueeney. Preceded in death by parents and infant son. Survived by wife, former CHARLOTTE OVERBERGER, and daughter, Mrs. Debra Payne, Ranson, W.Va. Brother of Ledward Ruggles, Cherry Tree; Mrs Geraldine Long, Indiana; Rodney, Lomita, Calif; Bernadine, Cleveland, Ohio, and Lyle, Medina , Ohio. Retired after 22 years of service from US Army, serving both in Korea and Vietnam. Member of Hastings Post, VFW and Hastings, LOOM. Also member of Hastings United Methodist Church. Served as Hastings Borough secretary for 11 years. Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Easly Funeral Home, Hastings, where service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, the Rev. David Stains, officiating. Interment, Uniontwon Cemetery. Military graveside rite by Hastings Post, VFXW. The Hastings cemetery is the "Union" Cemetery, but there is a "Uniontown" in Indiana County. Which family would Charlotte Overberger belong to? Marilyn Kline Washington

Can you please get the spelling correct?! It's "Jaeger" and as you finally correctly stated, it is the German word for hunter. It can have many different contexts, including people who hunt animals and military sharpshooters, I believe. - - - - - - - - - - Search for more Cambria County information on our webpage: http://www.camgenpa.com/ ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to PACAMBRI-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message

    1. [PACAMBRI] Father Andrew Pier, OSB author of "The Woodlands Above Us, the Mines Below"

    3. Fr.
