Dear List, I read in a book entitled, "Souvenir of Loretto Centenary, October 10, 1899",an entry for a Daniel and Margaret McGonigle, married by Rev DAG in 1819.It shows they had a son named Patrick. If anyone has any informationon these persons, could you please share it with me? Health wise Iam not at this time able to get to Ebensburg to do research at the Court House. Thanks in advance, Robert McGonigleColumbus, OH
I read a review for a new book the other day. Not advertising it, but I found a couple paragraphs interesting. It's the story of Jane Franklin, sister of Benjamin Franklin. In the first review, it mentions her name, Jane, that she was raised in 18th century Boston, married at 15, lived until 81, bearing 12 children. Nowhere in the Columbus Dispatch review does it mention the name of her husband or when she lived. After doing a web search, found a second book review in the Boston Herald, which stated she lived 1712-1794 and was married to Edward Mecom. Bring this up only because of how frustrated we get when looking for obituaries and wonder why the family included so little information, or why wasn't one published at all. Even today, one paper thought the information wasn't needed while a second paper thought it should be included. The second paragraph was illuminating regarding education. "Like most middle-class New England girls of the period, Jane was taught to read but not write, and so the letters she wrote to her brother are full of imaginative spelling." I found this interesting because even in the 19th century, for those decades where there was a section on the census asking if you could read or write, some individuals would respond they could Read but not Write. Wonder why reading was considered important but not writing, and if you did know how to read, shouldn't you know how to spell?
Ah, the beauty of language in the Victorian era and just thereafter... Thank you for bringing these into the light of a very different age. Only suggestion I can give is that Tunnel Hill Boro is on the Blair County line and is separate from Gallitzin itself. Some of the people who listed Tunnel Hill Boro were actually living in Blair County, especially Bennington--which had a post office. Try checking the cemeteries in Galllitzin Township. There is a cemetery that was was United Methodist from Bennington, but I don't know the location of the cemetery on the email sites. The actual location is Blair County and Logan Township. I am researching Harry George MOORE (1894-1934) who married Beatrice Marie Myers. As far as I have been told he was adopted by John Moore and Isabelle (Isabella, Bella Bendon) I find John and Isabelle and the year of birth changes from census to census. from John being around 1843 and Isabelle being closer to 1844-48 From the 1900 to the 1910 census for Tunnel Hill John goes from being 4 years older to 3 years younger than Isabelle. In 1920 John is a year older. (Still on Tunnel Hill.) My Great Aunt (Harry's Daughter) still lives on Tunnel Hill and in speaking with her a few years ago she said that John and Isabelle had no other children. But I stumbled upon a John R. Moore who seems to fit into the puzzle. But he had a daughter Bertha Moore in 1876. He also had a number of brothers and sisters and I find some overlap but I am not sure if these are two different people. As a follow up I was also told that Harry's birth parents were James Gainer and Sarah or "Sadie" She mentions that Sarah was married about 5 times, and it seems from my notes and the recording I took that her last names included Gainer, and it sounded like Crawford, and Weaver were two others. (It was a quick laughing mention and I didn't realize at the time how important it would be - Out of respect I didn't want to push on what used to be considered more family secrets) At first I was told that James died by his own hand, but now it may be that it was some sort of accident. I have very few links or leads to go on. I have searched Cambria and Indiana Counties, and don't see anything for them. The only link maybe a Sarah Moore that would have been a niece of John and Isabella as it seems that family would take care of family, but other than seeing the name in the tree if I have the correct John Moore, it is nothing more than a guess. To whom did I promise a picture of Albert Feighner m to Frances Campbell? I have it now on email and will send by return mail. Marilyn Kline Washington
That's a lot of questions, Marilyn! Charles Miller was the oldest son of Henry Miller (youngest child of John George Miller and Catherine Lechler) and Mary Theresa Kuntz (oldest child of Jacob Kuntz and Magdalena Rometsch). I do have a copy of Henry's will, but have not made a study of the deeds associated with Henry's property. When Henry died he appointed son Augustine Miller and George Snyder (married to Theresa's sister, Elizabeth Kuntz), to be his executors. He instructed that all his real and personal property was to go to his wife Theresa for her lifetime and upon her death the real property to go to sons Laurence and Henry to be appraised and sold. Laurence and Henry were to pay $500 each year to each of the heirs (there were 12) from oldest to youngest until all had received their share. Henry's personal property was to be sold on Theresa's death and the proceeds divided equally amongst the twelve heirs. After Henry's death, his son Augustine filed a petition to get a deed on a 50 acre parcel of land that Henry had sold to him for $500. Henry had neglected to record the transfer when Augustine finished paying off the land. All the siblings signed off on this transfer. The property description includes neighbors Thomas and Jacob Byrne, but I'm not sure where it was located. Henry was enumerated in Susquehanna Twp. and also shows up there on some county plat maps. Augustine and family were living in Clearfield Twp. in 1900, but I don't know if that home was on the parcel he bought from Henry or not. John George Miller had owned 240+ acres at Hart's Sleeping Place, but Henry did not get any of that property as an heir. Notes in the probate file regarding the sale of real estate after Theresa's death in 1901 included the following: /Also with the amount of purchase money received from the Walnut Run Coal Co. for coal, mining rights and privileges sold to them $620.00// //Also with the amount of purchase money received from Jos. Kernely for real estate sold to him, (including interest) $1,836.00// //Also with purchase money (including interest) for timber and for land sold to Jos. A. Gray, Lorans Wyland, and Edward Kirkpatrick $2,779.14/ TOTAL $5,249.59 After expenses were paid, Augustine Miller filed the following: /his first and final account as such executor and the same having been duly confirmed by the Court was recorded in Orphans' Court Account Book Vol II at page 599 and that there was a balance in his hands as shown by said account of the sum of $4,678.39.// //The petitioner further represents that by the provisions of the Last Will and Testament of said Henry Miller, deceased, said sum of $4,678.39 was payable in equal portions to all the children and heirs of said Henry Miller, deceased and having made distribution among them the shares of said parties in interest are as follows:///(each of the heirs received $389 and change) _Henry and Theresa had fifteen children as follows_: Catherine married first to Valentine Weakland who died in the Civil War and second to Sylvester Luther Magdalene married to Charles (Robert Wallace) Dunlap [my direct ancestors] Charles married to Rose Bagley Mathilda, died in childhood Sylvester, died in childhood Martha Ann married to Lorans Wyland Anthony married to Catherine Gallagher Augustine married to Mary Agnes Lantzy Mary Ann married to John D. Lantzy Margaret Ann married to Michael Lantzy John, died in childhood Henry Jacob married to Catherine Ryan Mary Theresa married to Callistus Gilbert Luther Lawrence married to Barbara Anna McAnulty Lucinda married to Charles Eck _ _I do not have a copy of Charles' will or any of his land transactions. It's been six years since I've been to PA last. Maybe I can tackle the Miller family deeds on my next trip, whenever that might be. _Charles and Rosalia had twelve children_: Elmira Mary married Patrick Riordan Isadore James married Clara Kirkpatrick Sylvester married Sarah Jane Fritz Mary Ida, married Thomas Gibson (died @26) Charles Franklin, died in childhood Luke Amandus married Elizabeth Kelley Mary Malvina married Joseph Henry Vogel Pius Gilbert married Celia Westover Anicetus Thomas, died in childhood Mary Blanche married David Tovey Mary Effia married Albert Dowey Mary Rosalia married Anicetus Joseph Lehmier There were at least three Miller families in Cambria county from a very early date. I have some of the others in my file, too, but couldn't begin to guess who A. A. Miller, blacksmith might be. I don't have anyone entered with two given names beginning with A. None of the Miller descendants of John George whose names begin with A were listed in a census as blacksmiths. As regards the Eck family, I only know that Charles was the son of Percival Eck and Mary German and that the Ecks came to Cambria County from Berks County. I posted the question for Mary and Jim, but I think there may be others interested who can answer my questions or find answers to their own. I posted the article for you, Mary. However, second reason, I have questions. It says Charles Miller OF SPANGLER, but says Isidore ON THE HOMESTEAD. Where is the homestead and did Isidore inherit it? It also says the "Charles Miller Farm." Are they one and the same? Has Sylvester retired and has Amandus inherited /purchased Sylvester's farm? It adjoins the Fritz farm of Sara Jane's brother, Hiram. I assumed it was a Fritz possession and they was why Sylvester, married to Sara Jane, farmed it. Am I wrong? Was it a Miller farm? Could I please have the names of the wives and husbands of the children? And siblings? Also the maiden name of Harry's wife, Theresa? Who is A.A. Miller? I think it said he was a blacksmith. It isn't in this obit, but I saw the name connected to his family. In 1850 Census the Fritz farm is in Carroll Township. The present farm, located at the turn off the Barnesboro -- Hastings road, at the turn called Fritz's Corner, is in Susquehanna Township. It would have been in Carroll only at the very first, when there were only three townships in Cambria. Or else the Fritz family moved. Do you by any chance have a family tree of the Eck family? One from Hastings married a Collins. There is the Eck House with a historical plaque on the first house at the main stoplight in Carrolltown. Another Eck is married to a Buck. And somehow the family is related to the Geus family--that connection is one I wish to know about. It is Philip Geus who ran the Nicktown Hotel till he moved to Hastings. I know how the Geus and Houck's are connected, but not the Geus and Ecks. My grandfather's brother-in-law, John Geus is married to Ambrose Feighner's sister, Anna. After John Geus died, Anna lived with two of his unmarried sister at their Geus home across from the St. Bernard's cemetery.
