I would appreciate stories of shopping at the Eureka Store in Windber which was a company store...Batha May Karr Growing up in Windber and Salix I am always interested in a good map. Large scale coal mining in the Windber Field began in the 1890s. The dominant company was the Berwind White Coal Company. Coal seams mined included the Upper and Lower Freeport, Lower Kittanning, and Brookville. These low-volatile "smokeless" coals fueled the great steamships crossing the Atlantic Ocean in the early 20th Century. The original mines of the Windber Field were closed in the 1950s and 1960s, but some coal mining still occurs in the area. Here is a very good web site showing the location Windber mines. http://www.coalcampusa.com/westpa/windber/windber.htm

Hi Researchers, I need a little information re: Charles 'Thomas' Byrne, b. August 25, 1834 in Loretto, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. As you all know, I am always looking for interesting tombstones from Southwestern Pennsylvania. I found some rather interesting stones in Westmoreland County over the weekend. In the Old Zion Lutheran Cemetery located in East Huntingdon County, are three stones in a row, erected for Colin Tarr, Alexander H. Tarr, and Sarah Tarr Myers, three adult children of Daniel and Mary Tarr, dating from 1824 - 1844. On the upper most portion of the stones, the stones have been intentionally damaged to remove part of the carvings. Upon closer inspection, I realize that the damaged carvings were in fact skull and crossbones icons. The stones can be view at http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/westmoreland/tsimages/oldzionluth-easthuntingdon.htm These three stones would be the only surviving examples of what is refered to as a memento mori (remember death) motif in Southwestern Pennsylvania that I am aware of. At some point the church must have considered the death heads to be inappropriate, and removed the carvings, a true loss to all of us taphophiles. Memento Mori carvings were commonly found in early colonial New England graveyards, and may be rarely found in a few cemeteries in Southeastern Pennsylvania. But our ancestors attitudes toward death memorials had changed and the memento mori was not at all in style by the time our ancestors began to move into Allegheny and Westmoreland County area. For those wondering why there is an area in the cemetery just for babies. The baby we lost in 1965 is buried in Babyland in the cemetery where I now live. My husband and I were young and we did not have burial plots yet. Nancy

It's a wonder any genealogical research can be done, given all the {supposed} courthouse fires that occurred all over the United States. The Cambria County vital records for births and deaths, covering the period 1893-1905, are available on microfilm through the LDS library. The birth records also include copies of delayed birth registrations that were filed in the late 1930's-1940's by people who needed a birth certificate to apply for social security. This was mostly for people born before 1893, which was the year Pennsylvania made it a requirement to file a birth or death record. For a birth certificate, you needed affidavits signed by 3 people saying they knew you when you were born. Not all records were filed. I have a great-uncle who died in 1906, and have had no luck finding a death certificate for him, although I do have an obituary. -----Original Message----- From: pacambri-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:pacambri-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Linda Black Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2009 2:48 PM To: PACAMBRI@rootsweb.com Subject: [PACAMBRI] Johnstown Courthouse Has anyone ever heard of a fire in the Johnstown Courthouse circa 1904 that destroyed the records there? The courthouse for Johnstown is in Ebensburg. I have not been aware of a fire that destroyed records. Around 1904 all birth records were being kept by the state in New Castle. Have you tried there??? Hi to all, being on the list I enjoy reading the mail. Could use some help in trying to locate a grave. Was in Barnesboro and talked to a man who seems to think our little Harry is in what they call Grass Flat Cemetery. My grandfather Harry was a miner and I was told a lot of the miners were buried there. My grand parents lived in Moss Creek where my mother was born. I guess they call it Marstellar now. Little Harry was born Oct 1922 and died in 1924 when so many were sick. he was buried by Longs Contras. In going there we discovered the early records were no longer there. He was Harry Noland Died May 25, 1924...1yr. 8mo. 14days old. My mother, my grandfather Harry Noland and my ggrandparents David P. Noland lived in Cambria. I do believe my gggrandparents Thomas and Mary(McHenry)Noland had lived there too. Any help is appreciated and willing to share all I have. Sincerely Shirl....jo246a@verizon.net
I've been in contact with the great-great-granddaughter of James and she can't confirm his parents. She has the same information we've all discussed during the last week. Back to the drawing board.
