She is survived by the following children: James, married and living in Ebensburg; Charles and Elizabeth, at home; Mrs. Mary Adams and Mrs. Kate Galligan; Mrs. Ed Landis and Mrs. John Galligan of Gallitzin. 3. Cambria Freeman, Ebensburg, Pa. Friday, May 8, 1908 Volume 42, Number 19 Third Death from Spotted Fever at Lilly Lilly, May 2 Spotted fever has claimed within seven days the third child in the family of H. Mills in this place. The latest victim was John Smith, a stepson of Mr. Mills, seven years of age. He died at 3:20 o’clock yesterday and three and one half hours later his body was buried by Undertaker J. E. Lowry. There is one small child remaining in the Mills family, a four year old boy. Umbrella Mender Found Dead Lilly, May 4 The unknown umbrella mender whose lifeless body was found this morning in the fanhouse of the Moshannon mines of the Leahey coal company near this place is not believed to have been a victim of murder. It is the general belief that the man who Saturday evening was seen in an intoxicated condition was literary roasted alive by the heat coming from a steam pipe against which he was resting when he took his long and fatal sleep. Two Deaths at County Home Two deaths occurred Sunday at the County Home. The first was that of Francis Greigler, an Austrian, aged 50 years, who was brought to the almshouse six weeks ago from Puritan, suffering from paralysis. The second death was that of an infant son of Margaret Bohner of Johnstown. In both instances interment was made at the County Home. Richard D. Jones Dies in California Old Ebensburgers will remember Richard D. Jones, a son of the late David W. Jones and wife of this place and regret to learn of his death, April 10th in Berkley, California. He leaves a widow and six children – three boys and three girls. Of brothers and sisters surviving him there are the following: William A. Jones, who has for many years been employed in the Barker Brothers’ store at Ebensburg; Mrs. Evan Bennett of Cambria Township; Dwight Jones of Guide Rock, Nebraska; Mary, wife of William A. Gittings of Pueblo, Colorado; Martha J. of Knoxville, Pittsburg; and Walter of Portland, Oregon. The funeral and interment took place at Berkley, California. 2. Peter's wife was Amanda Susanna Hartman. EBIG, Francis W. 12-540 Cambria County Marriage Index 94-1 1918 EBIG, Roena Cecelia HORTEN, Vincent Bernard 58-202 Beth Marilyn, Here's what I have on Francis and Mary. I hope that it helps. Francis Ebig was married twice, that I know of. Both times the licenses were issued by Cambria County, PA. I got copies of the Application for Marriage License / Marriage License / Duplicate Certificates this summer. Francis Ebig and Ellie Eckenrode applied for Mariage License No. 1720 on 18 February 1889. Her first name is also shown as "Ella" on the signature line and as "Ellen" in the Duplicate Certificate at the bottom that is completed by whoever marries them. They are both shown as being 21 years old at the time. Francis was a resident of Galitzin Boro and his parents are shown as Peter Ebig and Emanuel Ebig. (I know that "Emanuel" doesn't make any sense, but that is what it looks like. I suspect that someone misunderstood or copied it down wrong.) Ellie was a resident of Allegheny Twp and her parents are shown as Joseph and Rose Eckenrode. Francis' Occupation was Laborer. They were married on 19 February 1889 at Loretto by Rev. E. A. Bush. In "Catholic Vital Records of Central Pennsylvania Vol. V 1865-1869" by Rev. Albert H. Ledoux, on page 20, item 0552 gives the following birth data for Francis, and also one of his marriages: "0552 EBIG, Francis W. (m. Ellen Sophia Eckenrod) b. 02-15-1868" Francis W. Ebig and Mary A. Boley applied for Marriage License No. 5738. The date on the application section is 17 June 1895, while the date on the license section is 16 June 1895. Francis was 27 and Mary was 19. Because of her age, her parents had to give consent, which was filed on 27 June 1895 (Unfortunately, I didn't think to ask for a copy of the consent while I was there.) Both of them resided in Allegheny Twp. Francis' parents are shown as Peter Ebig and nm [maybe "nw"? Not sure what it means. Something to do with her remarrying after Peter died as you noted below?] Amanda Farabaugh. Mary's parents are shown as Joseph Boley and Cecilia Boley. Date of death of man's former wife, if any, is shown as 4 October 1893. Both parties are White. Francis is a Foreman on P.R.R. and Mary is a seamstress. They were married on 2 July 1895 in Loretto, PA by Rev. Ferdinand Kittell. The witnesses were Edward Ebig and Nettie Boley (this would be Mary's sister Bernetta). On the 1900 federal census, Francis and Mary are living in Allegheny Twp, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. They are in E.D. 99 on sheet 11B and are two families below Mary's parents, Joseph and Cecilia Boley. The census shows three children living with them: a daughter, Stella, age 10, born Jan 1890; a son, Elmer, age 4, born May 1896; and a daughter, Roena, age 1/12, born April 1900. Based on the birth dates, Stella would be from Francis' first marriage and Elmer and Roena would be from his marriage to Mary. Mary is shown as having given birth to 3 children, 2 of whom are still living. I think that the deceased child was Oscar Charles, but I am not sure. He is listed in the census for the Loretto Centenary, but is not shown on the 1900 census. Unfortunately, my photo of Oscar's grave marker is out of focus, so the engraving is a little blurry on top of being wet and somewhat muddy. The date of death appears to be Dec. 5, 1899. It is similar in style and appearance to! the markers of his siblings Edward and Helen who died in 1903 and 1907. Francis and Mary are buried in St. Michael's cemetary in Loretto, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. They share a headstone, although it shows "Francis V. instead of "Francis W." Their children Oscar, Edward and Helen are buried there, too, along with Francis' first wife, "Ella S". The markers for the children and Francis' first wife are the type that lay flat on the ground and have an unfortunate tendency to get grown over by grass. Myrtle Ebig (1891 to 1996) is buried next to Francis and Mary Ebig. I believe that Myrtle is one of Francis' daughters from his marriage with Ellen Eckenrode. For the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, Francis and Mary are in Sankertown Borough, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. The 1910 census lists Francis W. age 40, Mary A. age 33, Elmer L. age 13, Roena C. age 10, Elsie C. age 8, Herman F. age 5, Vernida E. age 11/12. It shows Mary as having had 8 children, of whom 5 are still alive. In the 1920 census, they are living at 313 Summer Street. The census lists Francis W. age 51, Mary age 43, Elmer L. age 23, Elsie age 18, Herman age 15, Verneda age 10, Arliene age 7, and Evelyn age 4 5/12. In the 1930 census, they are still living at 313 Summer Street. The 1930 census shows Francis age 62, Mary age 51, Elsie age 27, Arlene age 17, Evelyn age 15 and Floyd age 9. Charlie Boley To: [email protected]; [email protected] Subject: Re: [PACAMBRI] Elsie Matilda BOLEY, ca - 1890's, Cambria County From: [email protected] Date: Tue, 22 Nov 2011 20:17:25 -0500 Francis Ebig/Ibig was married twice and had children to both women. One was a Boley and one was an Eckenrode. If you have anymore on Francis and Mary, I would love to see it. I can look for what I have. I believe that Francis lived in Sankertown at one point, and I found a reference to his house burning down. I can't remember which was the first and which the second wife, but I don't think the two families "blended" very well, as the children of the first marriage were living with their grandparents. The Ebig family came from the same place in Baden as the Farabaugh family. I found Ebig most often spelled Ebig or Ibig, but I found at least 9 spelling of a four letter name. It is most often confused with the Illig/Ellig family, but that family came from further down the Rhine. near the mouth of the river. Genevieve Schwand was first married to Bernard Drenkel-Trinkley, who died in Germany, Baden. She then married Roman Ebig and later emigrated with him. She had children from both marriages, all born in Germany. My ancestor is youngest child, Sophia Ebig, who was about 15 when the family emigrated. I have been told that she did not speak English at all and/or that she spoke it very poorly. Either could be true, as farm women in that time period attended church and family events, mostly, and they spoke German in the family. Sophia married Charles Feighner-Fectner and he and Sophia [I am fairly sure, though I didn't look for the deed] bought a farm on Old Dutch Road, Carroll Township, from Sophia's oldest half-brother [at least the oldest who emigrated] John George Trinkley. That farm is still in the family. Charles and Sophia had 13 children, the oldest and two youngest dying young. Ambose, the youngest living son, was my grandfather. He married a girl from Clearfield County, who moved to Patton when the RR came--Crissy Woods. His brother, Joseph Feighner, lived on the adjoining farm that had belonged to their grandfather, John Feighner m to Mary Ann Flick [both emigrants.] That road upon which they lived is called Feighner Road. The oldest child of Roman Ebig and Genevieve Schwand was Peter Ebig, who married Amanda Hartman . Peter is buried in Gallitzin and then Amanda married Francis Farabaugh who had first married her cousin, Catherine Hartman. Another son, Edward Ebig, died in the Philippine Insurrection, part of the Spanish American War. Edward is buried in St. Benedicts. I am fairly sure that Francis Ebig was the son of Peter and Amanda Ebig, but again, I have not found a proof. I found him in the Loretto Centennary, as you did. I don't have much information on the Ebig family. I think it was Francis' daughter, Rowena, who married a Horton from Cresson. They later lived in Westover [WW II] and then some of the Horton children lived in Spangler and Hastings. My mother knew Rowena's family better than most of her Ebig relatives, since we lived on a farm on the Hastings-Westover Road. Catholics from Westover would attend mass at St. Bernard's Church in Hastings. Marilyn Kline Washington -----Original Message----- From: Charles Boley <[email protected]> To: pacambri <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Nov 21, 2011 9:31 pm Subject: [PACAMBRI] Elsie Matilda BOLEY, ca - 1890's, Cambria County Does anyone have any information on Elsie Matilda BOLEY? In the Souvenir of Loretto Centenary 1799-1899, there is a Census of St. Michael's Parish, Loretto, PA, taken on 15 August 1899. On page 295, Elsie Matilda is shown with the family of Joseph and Cecilia (Hertzog) Boley. Since the rest of the children are listed in chronological order, it would appear that Elsie may have been born between 1889 and 1894. The church census lists nine children: Charles Chrysostom, Elizabeth Bernetta, Ann Lucy, Alphonsus Ignatius, Theresa Magdalen, Francis de Sales, Elsie Matilda, Edna Louisa, and Nelson Modestus. Mary had already married Francis Ebig (2 July 1895) and Thomas Ellsworth BOLEY had already died (5 Dec 1894). This would make eleven children. The 1900 Federal Census shows Cecilia as having had 11 children, 9 of which were still alive. The census lists six children with Joseph and Cecila: Lucy, Alphonsus, Teresa, Frank, Edna, and Nelson. Charles was studying to become a priest, Mary was married to Francis Ebig, and Bernetta married Walter Beck (29 August 1900), which makes 9. Thomas was one of the deceased children; was Elsie the second? I have not been able to locate her in a census, nor have I found her in the obituary index for the Johnstown Tribune. Mrs. John McCormick Lucinda Philomena, wife of John McCormick, of 531 Linden Avenue, Johnstown, Pa., died at her home on Saturday afternoon last at 1:30 of a complication of diseases, the immediate cause of death having been lagrippe and rheumatism. Mrs. McCormick was the fourth daughter of Charles B. and Mary Porter Kennedy and was born at head Plane No. 3 on Allegheny Portage Railroad about one hundred yards southeast of the present PRR passenger station at Benn’s Creek, October 14, 1849, her father following the vocation of engineer of the stationary engine at the head of that place. Subsequently he removed to the head of Plane No. 1 where he ran the stationary engine at that point and built and ran the old St. Charles Hotel. Here the youth of the subject of this sketch was spent receiving a good common school education and afterwards preparing herself for the teachers’ profession in a country normal school taught by J. Frank Condon at Summit, and at the age of sixteen years she had become one the most successful lady teachers of the county, and thereafter up to the time of her marriage she was almost continuously employed, winter and summer, in teaching, often finishing out the unexpired terms of other teachers and subscription schools in the summer time and many of her former pupils today in counties of Blair, Cambria and Allegheny, mourn the death of a loved teacher and dear friend. Denny of Butler; Mrs. J. Lawrence Sullivan of East End, Pittsburg; Mrs. Dr. O’Hara of Pittsburg; James and Porter Kennedy of Braddock; A. Gibbs Shultz of Cleveland, O. and Mary, Paul and Kennedy Shultz of Swissvale are nieces and nephews of Mrs. McCormick, while Mr. and Mrs. P. Sweeny; Miss Sallie Sweeney, of Lilly; Miss Kate O’Keefe of Pittsburg; Mrs. Rose Dunmyer of Conemaugh; Mrs. S. C. Bailey and Mrs. Alice Farrell of Johnstown are cousins and many other relatives are scattered over Pennsylvania and the West. Mrs. McCormick had been in life a dutiful child, loving sister and friend, an efficient and conscientious teacher, a noble wife – a true help mate in every sense of the word, a loving affectionate mother, a kind charitable neighbor of the most self-sacrificing generosity and ever a faithful Christian – a devout member of the Catholic Church. On Tuesday morning last the mortal remains of the deceased enclosed in a neat casket furnished by the W. H. Cullen, of Wilmore, who had charge of the funeral which was managed with marked propriety was conveyed from her late residence where from the time of her death very many of the kind people of Johnstown had called to sympathize with her family and pay their respects to her remains, to the Pennsylvania Railroad Station and thence to Wilmore where in St. Bartholomew church of which she had been a member for almost thirty-five years, a solemn high mass of requiem was sung with the rector Rev. Father James B. Egan, as celebrant; Rev. Father Philip Bohan of St. Patrick’s, Johnstown, who had prepared her for death and Rev. Father P. J. Canote of Ehrenfeld, Miss Sadie Farber, presiding at the organ, at the close of which Rev. Father Egan preached an eloquent and pathetic sermon highly eulogistic of the virtues of the departed to a very large assemblage of mourners and friends, after which her remains were interred by the side of her son – John S. McCormick – in the family lot in the new cemetery near the church when all with respectful demeanor departed from the spot firm in the conviction that although they had lost a dear friend on earth they had gained one more in that home of the bless beyond the grave where sin and sorrow enter not, but in which all who really desire it on earth may secure an everlasting habitation.

    3. Cambria Freeman, Ebensburg, Pa. Friday, April 3, 1908 Volume 42, Number 14 Deaths 50 Years Ago Obituary – Died, at the residence of her father in this Borough on Wednesday morning, Kate, daughter of Mr. Peter Collins, in the 29th year of her age. The funeral will start from the residence of her father at 10 o’clock on Friday to proceed to the Catholic Cemetery at Summerville. The friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend. 1908 Deaths Funeral of the Late Owen Rowland The funeral of the Owen Rowland, who died at the home of his son, Isaac Rowland in Iowa City, Tuesday of last week, took place Saturday afternoon from the home of Sherman Tibbott, son-in-law of the deceased; after services in the Christian church by the pastor, the Rev. J. F. Klucker, the interment being in Lloyd’s cemetery by the side of his wife who died in 1875. The funeral was well attended, not only by the relatives of the deceased but also by the descendants of many who more than 50 years ago had first become acquainted with him as an honest and competent miller of the Tibbott Mill, a mile south of Ebensburg. In this community there are none who were not the friends of Mr. Rowland, as their sympathetic demeanor at the funeral amply testified. Mr. Rowland came of a race of millers, who in Wales and America, had few equals and no superiors, both as regards sterling honesty and capability. His brother, David Rowland, was also a miller and a nephew, Evan Jones, is now running a large mill near Dilltown, Indiana County. The two sons of the deceased, Isaac of Iowa City, and Evan, Sheriff of Johnson County, Iowa, accompanied the remains of their father to Ebensburg to pay their last sad duty to their loved parent. Also a nephew Isaac Rowland, son of David Rowland. Death of Mrs. Winifred Moore Aged Ebensburg Lady Dies at the Home of Her Niece – Mrs. Mary V. Shoemaker Mrs. Winfred Moore, relict of the late Thomas B. Moore, died last night at the home of her niece - Mrs. Mary V. Shoemaker on Julian street. The deceased lady, whose maiden name was Winifred Gibson, a sister of the late Rev. Father Gibson and Mrs. Joseph McDonald, mother of Mrs. Shoemaker, was born July 10, 1829. In her youth she married Thomas B. Moore, son of Johnston Moore, a well known merchant of Ebensburg. Mr. Moore died in 1874. Besides Mrs. Mary V. Shoemaker and her family, Mrs. Gibson is survived by her niece’s sisters, Thecla of the Visitation Convent, Baltimore, Md.; C. P. McDonald of Altoona and her niece, Miss Emma Gibson, daughter of Alfred C. Gibson of Philadelphia. Mrs. Moore was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church, and was a highly estimable lady, enjoying the friendship and esteem of all who knew her. On Monday morning next at nine o’clock the funeral cortege will proceed from the home of Mrs. Shoemaker to the Holy Name Catholic Church, where a high mass of requiem will be celebrated by the rector, Rev. Father H. U. O’Neill, after which interment will be made in the cemetery near the church. Mrs. Thomas O. Jones Dead Mrs. Thomas O. Jones, formerly of Ebensburg but for about 25 years a resident of Pittsburg, died at her home there Monday morning. She was found dead in bed and would have been 85 years of age next May. Heart trouble was no doubt the cause of death. Thomas O. Jones died of asthma in Ebensburg probably 30 years ago and some time after his death, the family moved to Pittsburg where the sons found employment. Surviving their mother are Miss Maggie, Henry, Richard, Owen and Jonathan. Thomas was killed in a mining accident some time ago. The remains were brought to Ebensburg Wednesday afternoon and the funeral took place from the train, interment being made in Lloyd cemetery. The Jones family are well remembered by older Ebensburgers. They lived in the house owned by Mrs. Walter Davis on Horner Street. Death of Mrs. Thomas M. Reese Johanna Reese, wife of Thomas M. Reese, was found dead in her bed about 4 o’clock Thursday morning, March 20, at her home at Bethel about five miles West of Ebensburg in Blacklick Township. Mrs. Reese had been an invalid for the past 25 years and was subject to epileptic fits, one of which is thought to have caused her death. The deceased was nearly 56 years old, the daughter of John and Mary Jones, well known residents of Blacklick Township. She was born and reared on the farm where she died. Mrs. Reese is survived by her husband and two sons – Lowry of Jeannette and Howard, at home. The funeral was held at 10 o’clock Sunday morning with services at the house. Interment followed in the Bethel cemetery. Mrs. Reese was an ardent church and Sabbath School worker until recently when her healthy failed. An Error [John Link] It was John Link and not John Kline who died on Tuesday of last week near St. Benedict. The error was caused by the mislaying of notes taken over the phone. Three sons survive Mr. Link – Simon, Henry and Martin.

    2. some years ago, i had two aunts stay over for christmas holidays. they were both in their 70's. my wife and i made them "old fashioned' presents. we got a big chistmas stocking and filled it with nuts, oranges, a sewing kit, small mirror, comb, and other litlle things that would have been in a stocking when they were little. they both immensely enjoyed the stockings and it got them talking about when they were small and the different things they had gotten as gifts. it was a very memorable christmas. bill bowman -----Original Message----- From: Patty Millich <[email protected]> To: cambria rootsweb <[email protected]> Sent: Mon, Dec 5, 2011 3:22 pm Subject: [PACAMBRI] Santa letters Dec 10 1915 hese are the letters published in the newspaper with all spelling errors and unctuation errors, etc. anta laus Letters Altoona Mirror, Friday, December 10, 1915 Gallitzin, Pa., Dec. 8, 1915 Dear anta Claus: I m droping you few lines to tell you what I want for christmas.
