Man from Ashville Meets Death in Wreck near Ebensburg In an automobile accident which occurred last Friday night on the state road west of Ebensburg, one man was killed and several others were badly hurt. The dead: George Cogan of Ashville, collar bone and left thigh broken; died when brought here. The injured: Luke Plunkett of Ashville, right leg and right arm broken; sent to his home at Ashville. G. B. Plunkett of Ashville, owner and driver of the automobile; right shoulder broken; sent to his home at Ashville. Henry Johnston of Ashville, right knee cap broken; sent to his home at Ashville. John Elder of Ashville, right leg broken; sent to his home at Ashville. Alvin Sheridon of Ashville, cut about head and badly bruised; sent to his home at Ashville. The automobile party was driving speedily along the state road. As the automobile driven by G. B. Plunkett turned a sharp curve at the Fes Lloyd farm, the driver saw a buggy ahead driven by Lynn Lloyd. Plunkett turned out for the buggy and struck a telegraph pole. The automobile was upset and the occupants hurled to the road while Cogan was thrown 30 feet over an embankment. Lloyd stopped his horses and aided the injured men to his home. He then telephoned for Doctors Jones and Bennett, who quickly responded. Cogan died when he was taken to the office of Dr. Bennett. The large touring car was wrecked. The injured men are well known in Cambria County. His Mother Dead J. Praul Rue, of the Metropolitan Hotel late Monday received word from Philadelphia, announcing that his mother had died in that city. Mr. Rue departed for Philadelphia. He formerly conducted the Merchants’ Hotel in Johnstown. Trapper Found Dead Going to Laurel Hill to visit their father, Nicholas Wolf, a trapper and woodsman, two daughters of his, residing at Johnstown, found his dead body in the shanty where he made his home. He evidently had died of exhaustion several days before. Early last week he went from his place to Johnstown, a distance of fifteen miles and while there his daughters tried to have him go to a hospital. He refused, however, and went back to his hut. A neighbor found him in poor condition and took him back to Johnstown. Wolf promised that he would go to a hospital and instead went back to the shanty. When his daughters learned of his condition, they went after him and found him dead. Death of Mrs. Joseph Brown’s Sister Mrs. Mary Alice Williams, 59 years old, died of heart disease at her home near Cresson Monday night. Mrs. Williams was born in Munster Township. Her maiden name was Parrish. She first married a Mr. Murry and then to Mr. Williams. Four children survive as follows: Mary, Lizzie, and Charles Murry of Cresson and Edward Murry of Ohio. Mrs. Joseph Brown of Ebensburg and Barney Parrish of Cambria Township are sister and brother of the deceased. Funeral services were held at the Catholic Church at Cresson at 7:30 o’clock Wednesday morning after which the remains were brought to Ebensburg for interment.

Keller, pastor of the Grace Lutheran Church. The couple were attended by Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Studt of Johnstown. They are residing in Lilly.

O’Neill in the Holy Name Catholic Church at 6 o’clock Tuesday morning united in marriage Edward McDonald and Miss Margaret McNulty. Mr. McDonald for a number of years, a porter at the Metropolitan Hotel and now with the Mountain House, is a son of the late Martin and Mary McDonald, formerly of Johnstown. His bride is a daughter of Margaret and the late Hugh McNulty of Ebensburg. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald are now on their honeymoon. Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. James Somerville of near Hastings, a few days ago, celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary and entertained more than 200 guests.

Friday, May 20, 1910 Volume 44, Number 20 Death at Nant-y-Glo Harry Weis, Formerly of Ebensburg, Victim of Heart Disease Nant-y-Glo, May 17 Harry Weis died suddenly on Thursday morning at his residence here. Mr. Weis had been until recently a resident of Ebensburg, moving there from his native town, Philipsburg, and was aged fifty years. On the morning of his death he complained of being ill and on the advice of his wife, retreated to his room where he was found dead a few hours later. A physician was called and diagnosed the cause of death as heart disease. The deceased was a member of the Catholic Church from which burial was made. He is survived by his wife and six children, one of whom is Mrs. Harry L. Hinman of Altoona, who has left for the deceased’s late home where she attended funeral services. Thomas M. Miner Dead Thomas M. Miner died at his home at Lilly recently of diseases incident to old age. He was in this 80th year. Henry Varner Henry Varner, formerly a resident of Jackson Township, Cambria County, farmer, died Sunday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Statler of Johnstown of general debility and disease due to old age. He was aged 71 years. Frederick A. Flaugh Frederick A. Flaugh, the 4-year-old son of Augustine and Harry (sic) Smith Flaugh of Johnstown, fell into a tub of hot water at the home of his parents last Tuesday and died Saturday morning. He was badly scalded about the chest and abdomen. Prominent Man Dead J. J. Hoblitzeil, a millionaire who died Tuesday at Myersdale, aged 78 years, was the father of Mrs. W. S. Ravenscroft of Ridgway, Mrs. Hugh Ross of Woodbine and five other surviving children in Meyersdale (sic). He founded the Savage Fire Brick Company, now owned by Johnstowners and opened the rich Jenner coal field to development. His holdings of oil lands in Illinois and in the South ran to thousands of acres. He was a member of Tancred Commandery, Pittsburg. Dead in a Cell Derry, May 18 After lying in a cell of the Derry jail for over a day, the body of William Brown, chief of police of this city, was found this morning by Burgess E. B. Leitzell. The man was last seen on the streets about the middle of Tuesday afternoon. The coroner held an inquest this evening over the remains and concluded that the man died of apoplexy. Succeeds at Suicide Emil Sodmont, Hastings Man Who Mutilated Self, is Dead Hastings, May 17 Emil Sodmont, who on April 23rd cut this throat and then mutilated other parts of his body, died on Saturday night. His funeral was held this morning, with interment at Carrolltown. The time which Sodmont clung to life, considering the serious nature of his wounds, puzzled the physicians. He was past sixty years of age and his vitality was remarkable.

Jones of Ebensburg and is employed on the Atlantic Coast Gulf Railroad. --------------------------------------------------------------------- MARRIAGES Engaged Before Civil War; Just Married Stamford, Conn., May 12 Miss Emily Brown, for upward of forty years a school teacher here, has finally been married to Norman Provost after a courtship that began before the Civil War. Miss Brown and Mr. Provost were sweethearts when the war broke out. Mr. Provost enlisted in the Sixth Connecticut regiment and served with distinction. Miss Brown took a course of training and was appointed teacher in a Stamford public school. She remained in the school until recently when she resigned. During all the years she and Mr. Provost were engaged. Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Ellsworth Kunkle, prominent residents of Coopersdale, Johnstown, recently entertained about eighty guests in celebration of the twenty-fifth anniversary of their marriage.

Friday, May 6, 1910 Volume 44, Number 18 Mrs. Johanna Wilhelm Mrs. Johanna Wilhelm, a well known Johnstown woman who had been blind for years, passed into the other world recently. She was in her 73rd year. Charles L. Pugh Charles L. Pugh, aged about 56 years, was found lying dead recently in the barn of Frank Martin, about six miles from New Baltimore, Somerset County. He had been missing for several days and his body was discovered by searchers for him. A few years ago the same man was found lying along a road with his feet badly frozen and it was necessary to amputate one of his legs.

Friday, April 29, 1910 Volume 44, Number 17 Oldest Resident Called by Death Mrs. Mary Davis Summoned by Grim Reaper Ebensburg’s oldest woman, Mrs. Mary Davis, died at 1 o’clock Wednesday morning, aged ninety-five years, eleven months and twelve days. As far as is known there is only one person in the borough older than she and that is James Gallagher who is in his 106th year. Mrs. Davis’ death followed an illness of several weeks The deceased was born in Wales, May 15, 1814. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Jones with whom she came to America 1830, locating in Cambria Township. Not long after her arrival in this country she was married to Ebenezer Davis of Cambria Township, who died in Ebensburg in 1874. Ten children were born to this union; the following surviving: Elizabeth, wife of E. J. Humphreys of Ebensburg, court crier; Mary, wife of William Richardson of Ebensburg; Miss Jane, at home and David, night policeman at Ebensburg. Mrs. Davis was a member of the Calvinist Methodist Church of which the Rev. Rowland is pastor. The time of her funeral has not been announced but services will be held in the church probably Friday afternoon. Interment will be in Lloyd Cemetery. P. J. McCullough Dead Died April 15 at his residence at 546 Fourteenth Street, Washington D. C., P. J. McCullough. Funeral services were held at the church of the Holy Comforter in Washington April 18. The deceased was one of the pioneers of Gallitzin, well and favorably known by many who will regret his death. The writer, who knew him for many years, will say that his life was most edifying and that he was a noble specimen of manhood. The love of God and his neighbors was uppermost in all his words and actions. He was a pioneer of Gallitzin. After leaving Tunnelhill he was a resident of Broad Top where he married. From there he went to Houtzdale where he was one of the signers of the petition for the incorporation of the borough. He was the first burgess of the town. For a number of years he held a position in Washington under the government. He leaves a wife, two daughters, one son and a sister, Mrs. Mary Ray of Northside, Pittsburg. Frank P. The attendants were Miss Mabel Piper of Wehrum and Alfred T. Isenberg, brother of the bride. Mr. and Mrs. Bougheimer will go to housekeeping in Pittsburg. A Carrolltown Wedding Miss Viola Stoltz, Bride of William Becker Leave for West Carrolltown, April 20 At the Monastery Chapel last Thursday, Miss Viola Stoltz of the Central Hotel was united in marriage to William Becker of Altoona. The ceremony was performed by Father Leopold with Benjamin Potoff and Miss Edna Thomas as attendants. Mr. and Mrs. Becker have started for Denver, Col., where they will reside. Shower for Miss Pruner A miscellaneous shower was held Thursday night of this week for Miss Emma Pruner, who is to be married next week to Fred O’Leary of Pittsburg. About 20 young ladies met at the home of Miss Martha P. Jones and then went to the Pruner home on High Street. An enjoyable evening was spent. Banns of Matrimony The banns of matrimony were published for the first time Sunday in the Holy Name Catholic Church between Miss Nettie Ross, a daughter of Mrs. James Ross of Ebensburg and Frank Gross of Johnstown. The marriage of the young couple will take place in about two weeks. They will reside in Johnstown.

Morgan, a poet of Johnstown, where he had a large number of friends, died recently in that city at the age of 71 years. He was one of the famous Welsh bards of the name Cardy-Kynon and wrote considerable poetry, much of which was contributed to the Drych, a Welsh publication of Utica, N. Y. His widow, a son and two daughters survive. Mark Twain Dead Samuel L. Clemens (Mark Twain) died at his home in Redding, Conn., Thursday night. The death of Mr. Clemens removes the dean of American humorist and the creator of American humor. Oldest Confederate General Dead Mobile, Ala., April 21 Major General S. C. French, the oldest Confederate general, died at Flortia, Ala., after a long illness. He was ninety-three years old. At the time of his death he was the oldest graduate of West Point.

The attendants were Harry Connell of Latrobe, a brother of the groom and Miss Eva Taylor of Greensburg. The groom is employed by the Lorain Steel Company. Mr. and Mrs. Connell will make their home in Moxham. A Coming Wedding In the Holy Name Catholic Church Sunday the banns of matrimony were published for the first time between Miss Emma Pruner, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Pruner of the East Ward and Fredrick O’Leary, a son of Mr. and Mrs. T. O’Leary of Pittsburg. The wedding, it is announced, will be a quiet affair and will be held within the next two weeks. Detroit Man Will Wed Miss Barker Engagement Announced at a Party Given Wednesday Afternoon The engagement of Miss Edna Barker of Ebensburg to Clyde Gardner of Detroit, Mich., was announced at a party given by Miss Barker last Wednesday afternoon. The Barker home on High Street was very prettily decorated for the affair, the color scheme being yellow and white, daisies being used on the tables. On the place cards, which represented bunches of daisies were the names of Miss Barker and Mr. Gardner. Luncheon was served during the afternoon, the catering being done by Mrs. Charles Port. Afterwards “500” was enjoyed for several hours. Miss Barker’s guests were the Misses Mary G. Lloyd, June Boney, Mildred Owens, Marion Jones, Martha Jones, Lulu McKenrick, Lucy Veith and Mrs. Louis Veith, all of Ebensburg; the Misses Oline and Grace Denny of Johnstown. Miss Barker is the daughter of Mrs. V. S. Barker of the East ward and is one of Ebensburg’s most popular young ladies. She has a host of friends throughout the county.

    3. Cambria Freeman, Ebensburg, Pa. Friday, April 15, 1910 Volume 44, Number 15 Hugh M. Bell Hugh M. Bell, one of Indiana’s best known business men, died recently at the age of 57 years. He was prominent in lodge and business life and a member of the Episcopal Church. Several children and his wife survive. Miss Mary Bell of Ebensburg, stenographer for Evans & Evans, was a daughter of the deceased. Mrs. Mary Huff Mrs. Mary Huff, wife of James W. Huff of Cresson, died Saturday evening at the Memorial Hospital from a complication of ailments, aged 51 years. John Illig John Illig, the oldest resident of this section, died at his home last Thursday morning of diseases incident to old age, aged 93 years. Mr. Illig was born in Germany April 17, 1817. He came to America at the age of 14 and had since then resided in this county. He is survived by his wife and the following children: Paul and Simon of Cambria Township; Thomas of Carrolltown; Tillie, at home; Andrew, Francis and Augustine of Cambria Township. Mrs. Mary M. Luther Dead Mrs. Mary Mulvehill Louther (sic), wife of Frank O. Louther, died at her home in Carrolltown at 4:30 o’clock Friday afternoon after an illness of diabetes of about one year. She was 42 years of age and was a daughter of the late John E. Mulvehill, who died about 18 years ago, and of Mrs. Martha Mulvehill, who resides at Carrolltown. She is survived by her husband and three children: Hubert, Brant and Gilbert. Mrs. Louther was a sister of Michael Mulvehill of 623 Somerset Street, Johnstown; John of Benton Street, Johnstown; Edward of East Pittsburg; Felix of Carrolltown; Walter of Spangler; Frank of Altoona; Mrs. Thomas Gillespie of Braddock and Miss Stella Mulvehill of 623 Somerset Street, Johnstown. The funeral took place Monday morning at Carrolltown.

Friday, April 8, 1910 Volume 44, Number 14 Prominent Farmer Dies near Loretto Loretto, April 2 After a long illness, Emanuel Sanker, a prominent farmer, died at his home near here at 2 o’clock this morning, aged 45. His father, Anthony Sanker, died a little over a month ago. The deceased is survived by three brothers and sisters: Mrs. Joseph McMullen and Mrs. Michael Bradley, living near Loretto; Zita, Mary, William and George Sanker, all of this community. The funeral was held at 10 o’clock on Tuesday morning in St. Michael’s Church. Mass was said by Rev. Father Ferdinand Kittell. Interment was made in the church cemetery. Blandburg Man Dead Altoona, April 6 Chief of Police Clark this morning received a telephone message from Edward F. Owens of Blandburg, Cambria County, informing him that Harry S. Owens, who was killed on the railroad Sunday at Plymouth, N. H., was his son. Mr. Owens stated that he read of the death of the young man last night and knew at once that he was his son.

Friday, April 1, 1910 Volume 44, Number 13 Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Richard Jones of Johnstown have been man and wife for fifty-one years and celebrated the occasion in a quiet manner yesterday. Both are in good health and appearances augur that they will live for many more years.
