Is there a certain library or center where one can go to look up obituaries, marriage notices in newspapers in Butler for the late 1800s forward? Thanks, Jane
yes the butler county library. I try to get up there 1x a month but it hasn't happened for a couple months here. Pat
Obituaries for Butler newspapers are indexed in a card file through about 1958. If Mrs. Eisler is in, she has access to an index through the 1960's. Unless you know the exact date after 1970, all you can do is go through the microfilm, day by day. The last 2000 papers that were microfilmed, started about 1810 and go into the early 1900's, these are not included in the card file index. The marriage licenses are not indexed as to when they appeared in the newspaper. You would have better luck finding a marriage license at the Government Judicial Center, in the Recorder of Wills/Marriage License Bureau, Lower Level. The Butler Public Library is located at 218 N. McKean Street in Downtown Butler.
