The Debtor and Workingman Friday March 8, 1895 Funeral of Rev. Alonzo Watts Lawrence. The funeral was held on last Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The remains lay in the front parlor of the parsonage, on the casket were Easter and Calla lilies, smilax, and an anchor of roses about it gathered the near relatives. Rev. L.O. FORESMAN read a chapter from the bible and Rev. J.G. CUNNINGHAM, of Osage City offered prayer after which Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Prat? sang, "Beautiful Beckoning Hands." Miss Carrie WALDO playing the accompaniment. The relatives present from abroad were: Dr. V.E. Lawrence (brother of Rev. Lawrence) and wife, of Halstead, Kansas; Mrs. S.W. McGARRAH, Kiowa, Kansas; sister of Rev. Lawrence; R.E. Lawrence, of Grove City, Pa, father of Rev. Lawrence; Rev. W. D. PATTON and wife, sister of Mrs. Lawrence, of Lincoln, Neb., R.M. TIDBALL, of Lincoln, Neb., and Hon.J.L. TIDBALL, of Crete, Neb., brothers of Mrs. Lawrence; Mrs. L.J. COOPER, of Crete, Neb., sister of Mrs. Lawrence. As the daughters, Lillian and Mabel were both sick, they could not go to the church and the last look at the remains of the departed father, husband, son, brother, and friend was taken by the relatives present. The ball bearers, James OLIVER, Benjamin DUTTON, L.R. ADAMS, William THOMPSON, F.M. NELSON, C.S. OLIVER, W.S. PICKARD, W.B. DAVIS, F.J. WILLIAMS, and E.G. PIPP, then took the remains to the church. The walk from the house to the church was lined on both sides by the members of the organizations to which he belonged. Every seat in the church was filled, all the extra seats, the aisles and place for the choir were occupied, and those who could not get in filled the basement below. At the church as song by the choir consisting of Miss Pearl RAYMOND, Mrs. O.W. ROUSH, Miss Alma PLAMER, and Messrs, M. B. RAYMOND and T.R. HAYSON was followed by scripture reading by Rev. J.O. FORESMAN and prayer by Rev. W.P. HILLYER. The choir then sang, "In the Cross of Christ I Glory." Rev. J.G. CUNNINGHAM, of Osage City, was very properly selected to preach the funeral sermon, having been a personal friend of Mr. Lawrence since childhood. After the sermon an opportunity was offered those present to take a last look at the remains; and then all that was mortal of the pastor who had so many times crossed the threshold of that church, were for the last time taken from it and conveyed to their place of rest in the cemetery. The Masons took charge of the ceremonies at the grave, which was conducted by J.F. MEHL. Despite the chilling blast that blew from the north, the remains were accompanied by a large delegation from the Masonic and Workman lodges and by a very large number of carriages and persons who were afoot. ==== KSOSAGE Mailing List ==== Osage County, Kansas KSGenWeb http://skyways.lib.ks.us/genweb/osage/index.html
