We are looking to employ someone to retrieve an 1854 or earlier litigation file at the office of the Prothonotary, Civil Records in the Old Courthouse of Butler County. Hi Marie, I just got back from Butler County. I had also wanted some records from the Prothonotary Office. The woman there was very helpful - but the older records, if they still exist, are located in a "storage mine" in a town north of Butler. She had written down my information and said she would try to have them sent down to their office. I never got a return call - the records may not exist anymore, but the indexes to them can give some clues and the indexes are at the courthouse. The Senator Heinz Pittsburgh Regional Research Center in Pittsburgh actually has some of the ORIGINAL documents from Butler County Court records in their collection. http://library.pghhistory.org/<http://library.pghhistory.org/> They won't make copies of items that are too fragile or brittle - and many of those documents are - I was surprised that they let me handle them.
