Looking for any information on Margaret Gile (or possibly Gill or Galo) who is believed to have been a foster daugther of Robert Aiken and his wife Elizabeth. Margaret was born 15 May 1826 in Harrisville, according to her 1909 death certificate (Illinois). A story in our family states that Margaret's parent(s) was/were killed in a forest or prairie fire and that a very religious Presbyterian man (possibly a minister) named Aiken raised Margaret and her siblings. In the 1850 census for Connoquennessing Twp., there is a Margaret Gile living with Robert Aiken and his wife. By 1857, Margaret had married Samuel McCracken, possibly in Butler Co. (By the way, Samuel's brother Robert McCracken was a Presbyterian minister in nearby Lawrence Co., and he may have performed ceremonies in Butler Co.) In 1859, Robert Aiken died and willed most of his estate to foster daughter Margaret McCracken. He also donated his collection of religious books to a Presbyterian church in Butler Co. In 1860, his widow, Elizabeth Aiken, was living with Samuel and Margaret McCracken, and she migrated with them to Iroquois Co., Illinois in 1863. A biography in Iroquois Co., Illinois of Margaret's husband, Samuel McCracken, states that her maiden name was Galo. I also find similar surnames in Butler Co. like Gill and McGill. Does anyone have info on Margaret (Gile?) McCracken or her foster family, the Aikens? I'd like to establish who Margaret's birth parents were and any siblings. Thanks, Norm Alder
