I am trying to retrace my grandfather Cataldo Callari’s history working in the coal mines of Pennsylvania. I’d like to find out as much as I can about the coal mines in and around the area of Butler and Grove City. Additionally I’d like to find a listing for him in the 1910 Census. I have found him and his family in the 1920 census listed as “Anthony Callery”. This listing was found in the 1920 census of Butler County, Clay Township, Supervisor’s District No. 19, Enumeration District 35, Sheet No. 3. In the very first column labeled “Street, Avenue, Road, etc” his street name is listed as “Claytonia”. Is that in fact a street? Judging from his background I suspect this might have been an area of company-supplied housing, as I can’t imagine him affording his own place, having arrived in this country only a few years previous. The fact that the census enumerator turned “Callari” into “Callery” further complicated my search to find him on the 1920 census until I checked the soundex cards as a last resort. I haven’t been as lucky with the 1910 census. Some background: I visited Butler and Grove City a few years ago and obtained from the respective Roman Catholic Churches, several baptismal records for his children. In 1910 one child was baptized in Grove City. In 1914, 1915, 1917 (my father), and 1919, his children were baptized in Butler. Judging by this, I am assuming he was in Pennsylvania in 1910, although I can’t verify his whereabouts in January of 1910, when the census was presumably taken. I do know that my grandmother Angelina Riggi Callari immigrated here in January of 1909 and went to Pennsylvania to join him, according to the passenger list records. To review: I’m looking for my grandfather’s name on the 1910 PA census. (It would most likely be “Anthony Callari” or “Tony Callari” – probably not “Cataldo Callari”.) It should be found in Butler or possibly Mercer Counties. I would also like to learn about the coal mining operations in that area at that time. I plan a field trip to the Butler area this summer (My wife particularly enjoyed a visit to the Grove City Outlet Mall the last time we were there). One final area I need help on: Three of my grandparent’s children died while in the Butler, Grove City area. How would I go about finding out details on when they died, where they are buried, etc? Thank you in advance for any and all help/advice you can offer. Chuck Callari ccallari@rochester.rr.com
