Listers: ? ? I recently?saw a listing for?a dentist, a Dr. Frank D.?GEER, whose practice was located in Johnstown, PA, c. 1902.? This was from the Western PA Genealogical Society's? Fall quarterly, 2009.? The article is a list of Penn dentists in 1902.? It states his practice was in the Suppes Bldg and he graduated from the PA. Col. Dental Surg., 1899.? ? ? I have a 2x greatgrandmother, Mary GEER, b. abt. 1810, Cumberland, PA who married James CARSON, b. 1800 Carlisle, PA on the 18th of Dec 1828, at the Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Pittsburgh, PA.? This couple's first two children, daus. Ellen B.?and Ann Virginia were born in Butler Co., PA, 1831 and 1837.? The family later lived in Old Allegheny/Allegheny City, as per Harris city directories and censuses.? This couple's d.o.d.'s were James 1875 and Mary 1885 and they are buried in the Allegheny Cemetery, Allegheny Co., PA. ? ? My question is could my Mary nee Geer Carson be an ancestor of the Dr. Geer, dentist, c. 1902?? I have no further data regarding Mary's parents or siblings.? ? If anyone is researching the Geer surname or has any further information and is willing to share, I would be most interested to hear from you. ? ?Thank you. ? Marybeth acmbjc@aol.com ?
You are so right - I know that Pleasant Unity is in Culmerville and that Culmerville is in northern Allegheny County. Duh!!! I have a copy of that great little historical booklet that you sent me from there. It's just that Crawford Jones's name was on the Application of Association for this church, but he's buried at Pleasant Unity. (Every answer presents 3 more questrions!) Crawford Jones was my paternal ggrandfather. A lot of his family is buried there. Pleasant Unity used to be a Cumberland Presbyterian Church, but now they're a United Presbyterian Church. There are not very many Cumberland Presby's left any more. I think there's one in Pittsburgh. Again, thanks for your help. "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." W. B. Probably not. In Clinton Twp there are (and were) 2 different Presby churches. One is the Westminister Presby Church on Westminister Road, and secondly I think, is the one you mention. That one is located on Route 228, left side of the road as you go westward on 228. Both might be visible on a mapquest map. Now, you have to research the differences between them (I'm R.C. so I don't know the nuances). I DO know however that the Pleasant Unity Presby. Church on Rt.908 is in either Fawn or Frazier Twp. I'm not sure which; the twp lines all run together to me in that neighborhood, and is, for sure, in Allegheny County, and it is, for sure, a "Cumberland" Presbyterian Church. Pleasant Unity is an active church, and has its own graveyard. See Norm Meinert's "Allegheny River Family Archives" website (google it) for a contributed reading for that graveyard. Westminister has its own graveyard, I'm not sure if Clinton Presby. does or not. The only source I know of for a reading of the Westminister Presby. graveyard is in a set of books, and the title of that particular one is "Cemeteries of the Southern Townships of Butler Co" or something similar. Thank you for your help. There should be a lot more Grahams buried in the Plains U. P Church, at least according to my research. I have some of the names you listed but a few I am missing so I will add them to my list of Grahams. They may be grandchildren of my direct ancestors. The Allan Graham Family holds a family reunion each year and in 2010 it will be held at Shawnee Park in Bedford County in July. Allan Graham was the son of Orin Palmer Graham, a lifelong resident of Cranberry Township. If anyone is interested, I'll be glad to provide information. Else, Thanks for the information on Grahams but none of them seem to be direct or children of direct ancestors. I have noted your information in case they turn up. Sorry I can't help you with Jane. Thank you, Bella. I have some friends who live and/or work in Butler, so I just e-mailed them to see it one could go and look for me. I always apprecirte your help. In the Butler County Recorder of Deeds, I found an Application for Association for the United Presbyterian Church of Clinton (Twp.). I'm wondering if this could be Pleasant Unity. According to the 1880 Ohio census John and both of his parents were born in Pennsylvania. The 1850 census lists Maria as being born in Pennsylvania about 1820. Have no idea where her parents were born. I have a Maria Ellenberger, daugher of George & Elizabeth Pontius Ellenberger, but my Maria is too young to be your GGGrandmother; she was born in 1837 and died in 1919. But family names can carry a long ways, and she could have been named for a aunt, or some such. If you don't find a better trail to follow than mine, let me know and we'll see where this one leads. Diane - could you do a cemetery look-up for me? I'm trying to find Mary Caroline Reddick Shook. She died in 1928 and, I believe, is buried in Rosehill Cemetery, near Lyndora. I'm curious as to whether any other members of her family (husband John, 3 sons & 3 daughters - Roseanne, Jesse Clarence, George Willis, Norman Earl, Olive M. & Pearl F.) are buried near her. Does the index tell what part of the cemetery they are in? That's a BIG cemetery! I'm also looking for Lena Mable Bellis McCandless (29 Jan 1879 - 11 Nov 1953), wife of Charles McCandless, b. 1875, whom I believe is also buried in Rosehill. Once again, I'd be curious as to whether any of her family (Donald, Ernest, & Clayton McCandless) are buried near her. I'm hoping to be in Butler County some time this fall and would be oh so happy to be able to visit these graves. Marilyn "Education is not the filling of a pail but the lighting of a fire." W. B. Marilyn, The Butler Pa Library's Online Obit Index has one for Lena McCandless with a date of 8 Sept 1953. This might be yours considering what are the odds of 2 Lena McCandless's dying in the fall of 1953. You might consider sending for this to determine if indeed she is buried in Rosehill. I saw no good hits for Mrs. Shook, but didn't look for her family. Bella Oct 3, 2009 12:40:14 PM, [1]pabutler@rootsweb.com wrote: Diane - could you do a cemetery look-up for me? Thanks for the reply. Starting again on my brick walls.... Have no information on the parents of John Barto or Maria Ellenberger, so any help will be appreciated. Have been looking for John in the 1840 census records. He and Maria would have been married with two sons under 5, possibly three as my GGrandfather David was born 9 Aug 1840. Have been trying Butler and adjacent Armstrong, no luck so far. Trying to find any information about my GGGrandmother Maria Ellenberger. Found her family in 1850 Pennsylvania, Butler, Clearfield. Head of family is my GGGrandfather John Barto (indexed as Barte) Maria is 30 with seven children. John is next found in 1860 Ohio, Jackson, Madison. (indexed as Barton) He was remarried to a widow Rebecca Langsdale who had five children. There were two additional Barto children, the youngest age 5, Martha J. Based upon this data I think that Maria probably died around 1855 during or after the birth of Martha J. Finally discovered Maria's maiden name from the death certificate of her sixth child Michael. Would appreciate any help with her parents and siblings. Ron Bartoe
Judy, I checked in the Butler County Cemetery Inventory, Vol. 5. In the Plains U.P. Church Cemetery, Cranberry Twp. I found the following: Mary Graham d.6/10/1886, age 82/10/16 Mathew Graham d. 11/3/1858, age 77/7/11 Ester Graham d. 8/28/1869, age 1/-/22, dau of M&E Ester Graham d. 10/29/1869, age 44/10/-, wife of Mathew Emma M. Infant Graham d. 9/8/1868, age -/1/8, dau of G.L & Lottie That's all I could find in the Cranberry Twp. Cemeteries. Have you ever checked the 1883 Butler County History? If not, it's available online. In the chapter on Cranberry Twp. it mentions Mathew Graham & I believe he is the one you're looking for. You go to the Butler County Genealogical Society's website www.bcgs.us/ click on Butler County Online Resources, click on Histories, then 1883, then the Cranberry Twp. There's also a little bit in the 1895 history, which is on that same sight. I hope this is helpful. Let me know. Diana

I have a Mary Hannah Young that married George Graham in Butler and they later moved to Steubenville. Children: Margaret Mary 1904, Grace 1892, Dale. A Jacob Sylvester Young that married Nancy Paislely Grahan in 1881. Children: Florence May Young 1881, Harry Wilbert Young 1883, Edna Graham Young 1885. That's all the Grahams I have. Not really researching them but thought you might be interested in them. The one I would really like to find out about is Jane Graham that married May 1825 to Jacob Kelker in Harmony. They had a daughter Jane Kelker born 1828 and then his wife Jane divorced Jacob in 1829. I would like to know what happened to their daughter. Hi Diana, I'm looking for the spouses of some of my early Grahams. Matthew Graham II b. 22 Mar 1780 d. 03 Nov 1858 had a son, Thomas. 1821-1904. I do not know if or who he married. William Graham, b. 17 Jan 1783 d. 12 May 1861 had a son David b. abt. 1809. I do not have a death date or the last name of his wife, Mary. Also a son, Samuel b. 22 Nov 1819 d. 11 Jul 1892. I don't have a spouse's name. Also a son named Harvey b. about 1827 in Cranberry Twp. I don't have a spouse or a date of death. My last puzzle is anything about the wife of Oliver Hazard Perry Graham b. 05 May 1814 and d. 05 Dec 1895 all in Cranberry Twp, Butler County. Her name was Elizabeth (Eliza) Morgan but am not sure of her parents. Any help with this would be appreciated. I am trying to fill in a few of the blanks in my family sheets. I'd be glad to help anyone else with the Grahams of Cranberry Twp as I have them. Thanks a lot.
