I read about the cemetery volumes of Butler County on this list-serve. I have been looking for the death or burial of a Johnston White and his second wife Susan White. Susan died in March 1880 and Johnston, age 82 is still listed on the 1880 census of Baldwin twnshp., Allegheny County. Previously, they were on the 1850, 1860, and 1870 census of Middlesex twnshp, Butler Co. Johnston (Johnson) was a Justice of Peace in Middlesex. He might be listed as William. Could any one check these volumes of cemetery listing for a Johnston or Susan White, or William White. I can't find them in Allegheny Co., so maybe they were returned to Butler. Any help you can suggest would be appreciated. Thank you!! Diane, Is there any chance your book lists cemeteries by the Oakland area? If I remember correctly Ellen Rebecca Sowash was living in that area when she passed in 1880. Thanks for the listings of the Slipper Rock area though, I'll have to take a look at my records to see who matches up. Hey folks, With having smaller children I've been away from researching my wife's family for a while. However; the other day I received an email that has started getting me back into it. While playing around with Microsoft's search engine I put in the name Peter Sowash and expected to see a couple things about Peter Flemming Sowash, who was an older brother to my wife's so great grandmother Zula Sowah and the first of 3 children to Henry and Ellen Rebecca Sowash. However; for the first time I had a search engine direct me to the online version of the Butler County, Pa book. While I was excited to see something new (to me at least) about the Sowash family I noticed that the date 1826 seemed to be way way to early for Peter Flemming Sowash. However; it stated that Peter worked his trade as a blacksmith until his death but that his children Henry and Fleming took over the business. In the census records that I've used to track down Zula to her family, they have been listing Henry with a trade of blacksmith. Please undertand I live in Michigan so a quick trip to the Butler County Courthouse for me is a bit of a longer drive. So before I start making phone calls or sending letters I'm hoping maybe someone here might be able to help give me a little direction. First; I'm wondering if there's anyone out there researching the Sowash family that moved to that area or possibly a connection from the Westmoreland (?) area. Secondly: Would there be any chance that there could be any Church records or such from that time frame (marriage, death, christaning, etc.) still in existance? Third: Is there anyone possibly around the Centerville area that ever walks the cemeteries? Thanks, Mike McDonald Michigan

Are you still researching the Winneal family? I have a relation Christ Winnel b. 1843 that I believe is the Christian son of Christian and Mary in Butler county. In 1870 he is living next to Lewis Winnel in Sharon, Mercer, PA. I am still trying to figure out this family. The name variations are crazy. I have not been able to find Christian and Mary in 1840. Their children are born in the 1830's in PA and unless they are living with someone or were missed they aren't there. Also, they are such a large family I'm suprised that there aren't more of them. I read the two Butler Co. history books with no mention of the family; except for, in the History of Butler County, 1895 War of Rebellion/134th Reg Co K, Lewis WINNEAL was listed as a musician.
