    2. Nancy, It's good to hear from you. Will you be visiting Butler County this year? I was checking to see if I had anything on Robert Black. There is Robert Black, born Adams County, Pa. a s/o Adam and Polly Black. He married (1) Sarah Courtney, (2) Sarah Uber. There is Robert and Elizabeth (Grossman) Black. He was born in 1770 in Huntingdon County, Pa. They married in that county, too. His wife was a daughter of Benedict and Betsy Grossman, my great, great, great grandparents. There is a Robert Black born in County Donegal, Ireland about 1809. He married Elizabeth McElhinny in Ireland about 1834. Are Robert and Sarah (Bovard) Black of Butler County, too? Both surnames are local ones.

    1. Re: [PABUTLER-L] Re: Joseph Brown DODDS
    2. Iris, I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you on the location of the gravesite of Joseph Brown Dodds and wife Margaret. I visited the White Oak Springs Church 5/19/01 in search of the gravesite for my Hilliards and Dodds. I found the marker for J. B. DODDS, Dec. 12, 1834 - April 29, 1885, M. J. DODDS, July 15, 1842 - June 11, 1908, along with several other Hilliards. The stone itself is a larger stone -- several feet high, and could possibly be a replacement for the original. If I remember correctly, I believe someone told me that their grand daughter PLUMA HILLIARD had replaced the stone sometime before her death. I remember pulling into the church parking lot and parking close to the graveyard. I then walked along the front of the graveyard along Rt. 68 past some trees. It might be in the 3rd or 4th row of grave markers from the group of trees to the right of the church. I know I saw other DODDS buried further away from the church toward the center of the graveyard. I'm sorry I can not be specific, but I've only been to the site once. I did get a good picture of the grave marker, but I don't have a scanner as yet. Kathie

    3. Thanks, Glee, for the info and memories of the Bear Creek and Concord churches. I, too, had ancestors in each. Hopefully someone around Fairview will have some more information on Bear Creek church. I'm ultimately trying to see if I can get more info on what townland Robert and Sarah Bovard Black came from in Donegal, Ireland. They were part of the Bear Creek church. And my father and his brothers always took us to Concord Cemetery on Memorial Day. It was an annual outing from Ohio where we grew up. Just want to wish all out there a great Easter. And many thanks for the all the help I've received from this terrific list. If I could be on just one, this is the one I'd choose. You guys are the nicest people around! 1. [PABUTLER-L] Genealogical Society
    2. Pat
    3. Ed and all interested... We could start up a genealogical society here in Butler again, but we would need some definite goals and a purpose. I think this is basically what happened to that group years ago. There are meeting rooms in the library that can be used for free for community groups like this. Or we could possibly use a room in one of the school district's buildings. I'll check around here and see if I can find the by-laws and stuff from that group which might give us some direction. Pat

    2. The local history books don't seem to give the names of the early members of some of the early churches. On page 560 and 561 in Brown's 1895 Butler Co. history there are members mentioned for the North Butler Presbyterian congregation. They met in Fergus Hutchison's house after the first church burned. Some of the early members of the church included Samuel Jack, Joseph Thorn, John Russell, Wilson M. Call, Isaac Robb, and all their wives, plus Mrs. Neyman. Some elders of the early church were William Dinsmore, J. L. Neyman, Archibald McJunkin, A. McCaskey, William C. Robb, Isaac Robb, John L. Neyman, W. J. Hutchison, W. H. Neyman, and Christy Robb In the History of Butler County published by Waterman and Watkins, 1883, p. 372, there is an article on the Bearcreek Presbyterian Church in Fairview Tp. According to it, the first worship was in a tent. It was called Deer Lick Tent and was positioned in the middle of the "old" graveyard which was about halfway between Fairview and Karns City. About 1800, the neighborhood Presbyterians, including Sam Kinkaid, Joseph Smith and John Craig, erected a log church. The site was in the Lower Bear Creek Cemetery. I assume that to be on the left, in the trees, as you drive into the cemetery. Maybe someone out Fairview way can tell us. I wonder if my young teenage genealogy friend at Fairview can fill us in. Twenty-five years ago more stones were observed at that site on the left, even though only the top half of the stones were above ground. Today they're gone completely, sunken all the way into the ground. There are only a very few stones in the trees, now. The article on Concord Presbyterian Church is quite large. Especially North Butler, Sunbury, and Fairview. I had ancestors in all three areas. Are there any records available for their early days?? Thanks so much. Joan Semper Sunbury
