I find William H. Ramsey in the 1909 history of Butler County. He was born March 25, 1845 and is a son of James and Annie (Covert) Ramsey. His grandfather was Alexander who married Grace Smith. If this sounds like your line, let me know. I'll type in the entire sketch after I catch up on other requests. Nothing in the sketch matches exactly with what you have. Also see a sketch on Baxter Ramsey who is also a grandson of Alexander and Grace and son of Anthony and Elizabeth McGeorge. Again, no names seem to match what you list, but you may find this is a whole new batch of relatives. Also note you have Alexander in your linage. Given customary practices in names, I suspect there may be some relationship here. This book was a subscription book so there are lots of family members who are not in the bios. I know from my family only a few are listed while I have the names, dates and locations of farms for all the family alive in 1909 and know most are not in the book. Suspect most of my family were either too poor or too tight to spend the money to get into the book. -----Original Message----- From: OkRnRamsey@aol.com <OkRnRamsey@aol.com> To: PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com <PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Saturday, March 23, 2002 2:11 PM Subject: [PABUTLER-L] Ramsey's of Butler County >Here is the Ramsey family I am researching. >Please bear in mind this information is in the process of being proved and >may not all be correct. I am looking for the surname Doerr. Thanks, Jeff
Here is what I found in the 1909 Butler County History. Hope it adds to your search. Martin Spithaler, one of Forward Township's best and most respected citizens, resides on his valuable farm of ninety acres, on which he was born, September 25, 1864, and is a son of Henry and Caroline (Householder) Spithaler. Henry Spithaler, father of Martin, was born in Germany and came to America when he was about eighteen year of age, settling first in Beaver County, Penna. He purchased a farm and also operated an old time horse power threshing machine. After his marriage he sold his Beaver County farm and came to Butlere County, where he purchased the farm on which his son Martin lives, in Forward Township. He was a fine business man and kept adding to his land until he owned two large farms and one small one, clearing the greater amount of this land himself. He died in the spring of 1899, aged seventy-two years. He married Caroline Householder, who was born in Germany and accompanied her parents to America, in girlhood. They had nine children, nemely: Henry; Caroline, wife of John Shutt; Jacob; Fred; Sarah, wife of Adam Where; Daniel; Charles; Martin; and Amelia, wife of Fred Millerman, with whom the venerable mother resides. Martin Spithaler grew to manhood in the old log house in which all the children were born and he remembers many occasions when fully an inch of snow sifted between the logs and fell on his bed. In his boyhood, youths were expected to work hard, when work was waiting to be done, and Martin had few chances to go to school and when opportunity came, he had to walk a distance of two miles to the old Critchlow school. He helped his father clear the farm, which was no small undertaking. He lived at home until his marriage, after which he operated the William Goehring farm until the death of his father, who rewarded him for his long years of faithful service, by willing him the home farm. He has made many substantial iimprovements here and has a fine property. There is a producing oil well on the farm, in which he has half interest. In December, 1862, Mr Spithaler was married to Miss Ella Goehring, who was a daughter of William and Sarah Goehring, and they had seven children, manely: Bertha ; Ida; Amanda; Walter; Elmer; Matilda and Esther. Mrs Spithaler died March 31, 1904, aged thirty-seven years, seven months and twenty-one days.j She was a loving wife, a kind and careful mother and a good neighbor. Mr. Spithaler is a member of the Reformer Church. In politics he is a Democrat. He takes an interest in educational matters in his township and served four years as school director. -----Original Message----- From: Glorygirl <GJWEISS@hargray.com> To: PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com <PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Sunday, March 24, 2002 12:02 PM Subject: Re: [PABUTLER-L] Ramsey's of Butler County >I also have the Ramsey family in my line. I am pleased to announce that the Albert Family Tree web site has been updated. Updates include new information on the Albert, Henshaw, Ralston, Matthews, and Summers families. Also, each name on the family group sheets now has a pedigree link that allows you to look at that person's ancestry, and move to other persons without returning to the family group sheet. In addition, at the bottom of each family group sheet is a mini-menu to allow you to switch to the name index pages as well. I believe I gave you Jacob's death registration information from the courthouse in Butler some time ago. Did you try land deeds for Cherry Tp.? That might give some light. to the situation.
Notice the following names: George R. Campbell, s/o Joseph and Elizabeth (Ray) Campbell was born about 1843. He died in Worthington, Armstrong Co., Pa. in 1911. George married first, Ellen Graham and they had a son Mordecai Campbell. His second wife, Olive Rider, was born about 1845 In Oakland Tp. Her obit states she was a daughter of "Chris Rider of Oakland Tp.," and states she "died of paralysis," which probably meant she died of a stroke and a complication was paralysis. She died 10 August 1908 in Worthington, Armstrong Co., Pa, aged about 63. George and Olive's children are Lewis, Ada, Presley, Walter, Herbert, Roy, and Charles.
Hi. Glee! How are you? Yes, I'd like to visit, but I've had zero time to devote to genealogy this past year, and am not sure what I'd be looking for. We moved to West Hartford, CT from RI and we have new jobs etc. Guess I may have to look in adjoining counties to see if I can find Jacob Thompson's resting place--he sure doesn't seem to be in Butler Co. He was an itinerant stone mason -died in 1899-and I'd suspect he was buried in Centre Twp., but I searched the cemetery on Brewster Rd.--no luck. Pat says that it's(Brewster Cemetery) probably in another county. thanks for looking. As for Robert Black (my great, great, grandfather), ours was a cousin to Robert (and Elizabeth Grossman) Black. They settled in Parker Twp., had a large farm in Bruin with oil wells drilled on it. If I could find their townland-his or hers-in Donegal, I could really continue the ancestry back. Some of the descendants want to know if there were any Catholics in our background in Ireland--most of us are Protestants-- and I'd love to meet some of our Irish cousins. Take care and thanks again! Dear Vonda, Ed and Granny, I was thrilled with the response to my query; so it seems easier to respond to all of you at once. In 1990, my husband and I returned to Uniontown (my home), to care for my father. Stayed eight years, then moved to Florida. In those eight years, I got the bright, but naive, idea that I could find every Rider of our original ancestor. I knew, from a cousin's research, that our ancestor was Lorentz Reiter who arrived on the Phoenix and that he had four children. I now have over 1,000 pages!!! There is a great deal published on the English Rider name, but almost nothing on the German Rider name. I combed Butler county on several occasions, but it was a long trip and tiring, so I didn't get as much done as I had hoped. Met some great people; found excellent source material. I now have 30 plus pages of Butler Rider's. I'm convinced that every Rider, Fleeger, Wick and others in your county are Rider descendants. One of Lorentz's son's was Christopher. His son, Jacob, settled in Butler county and is the heir of all Butler Rider's. Jacob's brother, Michael, stayed in Fayette County. He is my gg grandfather. Thanks so very much for the additions. Any and all will be included. Let me know what else you'd like to know. In the mean time, here are the first few generations for you to check and confirm we are on the same page (more than that makes this message way too big). Olive E Rider is the daughter of Samuel B Rider and Catherine Byers. If you have any questions in the meantime ....feel free to ask. Based on dates for George Campbell and Olive Rider, I believe that this is probably Olive B Rider and her husband (unknown to me ...). Olive B Rider is the daughter of Mary Rumbaugh and George Rider. George B Rider is the brother of Olive E Rider's father, Samuel B Rider. Hi cousin Debby Undoubtedly our cousin Vonda Minner, who has a vested interest in Olive Elizabeth Rider's line, will be getting in touch with you (if she hasn't already :-) ). Pat, I would definitely like a copy of this obit.!!! Frank W. Mills was my father-in-law's grandfather (Frank's daughter Gussie Mills, who married A. A. Hoch, Jr., was his mother). Frank W. Mills won the Congressional Medal of Honor. Though he was originally from Orange Co., NY, he has always been refered to as the only Medal of Honor recipient of the Civil War from the state of PA, where he spent most of his adult life. Thank you, Lyn Magill-Hoch
FRANK W. MILLS, HERO OF CIVIL WAR FAME, DIES IN PITTSBURGH Only Butler County Veteran to be Awarded Medal For Valor, to be Buried Wednesday. Detailed obit on Frank W. Mills of Chicora. One of his daughters married Kenneth McCollough of Butler, another daughter was married to A. A. Hoch, Jr., of Chicora. The rest of his family was in Pittsburgh. He was married to Sarah McFarland. If anyone wants this newspaper article, please let me know. Pat
Found these interesting articles today. If anyone is doing these families and wants the copy from the paper, let me know. 19 Sep 1907, The Butler Citizen. The Dodds Reunion The reunion of the Dodds family in Prospect, last week, was a great success.... Some Dodds family names included in the business meeting notes. Also several historical notes: 1. This was a First reunion. 2. Drs. Samuel, David, and R. C. Dodds were appointed a 'historical committee to prepare a history of the Dodds clan in America." 3. W B Dodds and Enos McDonald were appointed to prepare suitable markers for James Dodds, the weaver, and for his son Thomas. They are interred in the Mt. Nebo yard. 4. Dr. David Dodds exhibited two Dodds souvenirs to the audience. One was a razor used by Thomas Dodds, who died at sea while enroute to America in 1760. The other was Rouse's Version of the Psalms, published in 1760. Dr. David Dodds received it from his father, David Dodds who received it from his mother, Rebecca Dodds, who got it from her mother, Mary Guthrie Dodds, who received it from her mother, Susan Catherine Dodds. (I wonder if anyone still has these items today, 2002?) VANDERLIN 19 Sep 1907, The Butler Citizen John Vanderlin is at home in bed, and will stay there for some time. While he was on his way home on N. Main Street last Thursday night about 10 o'clock, a large, dark devised, well dressed man came out of the paved alley between the McCandless and Wise properties and asked him to help move a woman who had taken sick in the alley. .....Thereupon the man shoved a revolver in John's face: .....He also knocked John's feet from under and fell on top of him, and then he kicked John.....He is a young man, 22, and is something of an athlete. When he got home and found that the man's foot had cut him he sent for a doctor, who sewed up the wound, and advised him to stay in bed a week or two as the wound is in a dangerous place......
Were John L. and George T. Albert brothers? Do you know who the parents were? John L. Albert and Olive E. Rider, both of Center Tp., were married at Henshaw parsonage by Rev. May. There was a George Albert of Croton that died at 11 p.m. on Saturday of Asiatic cholera. Article can be found in the newspaper at New Castle, Lawrence Co., Pa.
