    1. [PABUTLER-L] LUTZ, Margaret/a > b. 1824 > Hessedarn(?), Germany
    2. Corinne Chadderdon
    3. Hi list: Just received a death certificate for a gg-granduncle which finally lists my ggg-grandmother's surname which is LUTZ. Census tells me that Margareta LUTZ was born about 1824 in Hesse Darn (I think this should be Hesse-Darmstadt). Estimated marriage date is 1843 in probably Butler Co., Pennsylvania, USA. Margaret/Margareta LUTZ married David BARLEY, s/o David & Unknown BARLEY. David BARLEY and Margaret LUTZ had the following children: Mary E., abt. 1844, probably in Butler Co., PA Caroline, abt. 1847, probably in Butler Co., PS John, abt. 1847, probably in Butler Co., PA Sarah, abt. 1849, probably in Butler Co., PA (my line) Daniel, b. 1850, probably in Butler Co., PA Barbara, abt. 1854, Ohio USA George W., 12 May 1858, OH Amy, abt. 1862, OH David BARLEY and Margaret/a LUTZ moved to OH between 1850 and 1854. Then the family moved to McLeod Co., Minnesota USA in 1869. I have not found Mary E. and Caroline in MN so they may have married in OH. I have not been able to locate this family in OH in the 1860 census. Hoping someone is researching the LUTZ surname in Butler Co., PA. Corinne

    2. Hi, I am researching the Freeman's in Butler County, but don't know much about them or how our ggg grandmother Jane Freeman (married to John Eshenbaugh) connects to the Butler County Freemans. Jane Freeman Eshenbaugh had her first child in 1824 in Butler County, Pa. and her birth is probably around 1800 - 1805. There was a William Freeman living in Butler County, Pa. around 1800, but don't know if he is her father. Since he was old enough to own land in 1800, I think he would have been old enough to be married and have a child. If anyone connects to any Freemans in Butler County, Pa. please let me know what you find. In return I will post to the list any info on Freemans that I find. Thanks Judy

    1. [PABUTLER-L] 1909 History
    2. Martha Bachman
    3. Joseph A. Humphrey, a son of James Humphry, of Worth Township, read law with J.D. Marshall, and was admitted to the bar May 4, 1896. He taught in the Butler schools for several terms and is now practicing law at Ellwood City, Pennsylvania. Then there is Sherman Clymore Humphry, one of Butler County's substantial and representative men, resides on his farm of 100 acres, which lies in Worth Township, on the Portersville and North Liberty road, about six miles north of the former village, and together with is brother, William H., owns a second farm of 100 acres, also in Butler County. Mr. Humphrey was born in Worth Twonship, Butler County, Pennsylvania, September 21, 1866, and is a son of John and Lydia (Studebaker) Humphrey. John Humphrey, father of Sherman C., was one of Butler county' prominent citizens. He was born in Butler County and was a son of William and Elizabeth (Vagan) Humphrey. William Humphrey was one of the earliest settlers in Worth Townshhip and helped to clear the land on which his grandson now lives. John Humphrey served in township offices and then was appointed deputy sheriff and filled that office under W.H. Hoffman for thirty years. Laterr he was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the death of County Commissioner John L. Kelley and at the expiration of the term was elected to the office with the largest vote ever given to a commissioner, in the county. He died June 28, 1895. Sherman C. Humphrey completed his education at Edinboro and when he returned home his father retired and moved to Butler, and then the young man took charge of the farm and since his father's deth has been the actual head. { Just a note of my own. I assume Edinboro means he went to the college there. It was probably a normal school at that time but is now Edinboro University in Edinboro, Pa. } He is a man with practical ideas and in the main follows modern methods in managing his land and finds them satisfactory. The stock he raises he keeps for his own use. On September 16, 1890, Mr. Humphrey was married to Miss Clara Studebaker, who is a daughter of John and Jane (Rutter) Studebaker. The Studebakers were very early settlers in Worth Township, the grandfather, Joseph Studebaker, coming as a pioneer. The father of Mrs. Humphrey is still actively and successfully engaged in farming although he has reached his seventy-third year. Mr. and Mrs. Humphrey have three children, Thelma, Glenn and Grace. The family belong to the Zion Baptist Church, being among its most active and interested members. William Humphrey, who for many yeas has been one of the most active business men in the western part of Butler, County, Pennsylania, is with his two sons, J.R. and E.W. Humphrey, ownere and proprietor of a large general store at Pertersville. He has followed this business in Portersville for more than forty years, and also for many years engaged as a civil engineer. In season, he is a wool buyer on an extensive scale. He is prominently known throughout the vicinity, an wherever known is repected and highly esteemed. Mr. Humphrey was born on the old Humphrey homestead in Worth Township, Butler County, August 22, 1835, and is a son of William Sr. and Elizabeth (Dunbar) Humphrey, and a grandson of Thomas and Ruth (Coulter) Humphrey. Thomas, the grandfather, came to the United States from Wales, and first took up his residence in Greensburg, Westmoreland County, Pensylvania. He and his wife later made the trip on horseback to Butler County, as were among the very earliest settlers of Worth Township, arriving some time during the year 1798. He aczuired and largely cleared a tract of 400 acres of land, on which he lived until his death in 1839. He and his wife were buried in the cemetary at Plain Grove, in Lawrence County. They were of the Presbyterian faith. William Humphrey, father of the subject of this sketch, was born on the old farm in Worth Township, and although he learned the trade of carpenter in early life, his chief occupation was farming. William Humphrey, whose mane heads this record, was reared on the farm and received a good schooling for those days. He learned surveying in the schools, and follwoed that profession off and on for a score of yeras, surveying much of the land in this part of the county. he became a partner to James Newton in the general merchandise business at Pertersville in 1869, but sold out and established a store for himself at his present location, where he has continued with uninterrupted success to the present time. His two soms were later taken into the firm and now perform most of the active duties in connection with the business. The store is completely stocked with a alrge line of goods, and would be a credit to a village many times larger than Portersville. In 1856 William Humphrey was married to Elizabeth Riddle, a daughter of John and Margaret (Hay) Riddle. Mr and Mrs. Humphrey are parents of the following: James, who lives at home; John Riddle, who is in partnership with his father; Newton, M.D., a graduate of the Medical Department of the Western University of Pennsylvania, and a practicing physician at Sharpsburg; Margaret, who married Re. W.H. Sloan of Hooker, Pennsylvania, and has three children, - William, Elizabeth and helen; and Edwin W., who is a partner in the store and secretary and manager of the Portersville Telephone Company. John Riddle Humphrey married Laura Moore and has three children - Ernest, Helen and Walter. Dr. Newton Humphrey married Florence Depuethe had has a son, William D. Religiously, the subject of this sketch has been very active in the Presbyterian Church of which he has been elder for twenty-five years. He served more than a quarter of a centry as Sunday School teacher but finally retired from that duty. Politically, he has been a firm advocate of Prohimition principles for some years.

    1. Re: [PABUTLER-L] Genealogical Society
    2. Here in Montour Co. PA we started a genealogy society in 1999. We met once a month without a room to keep our resources and kept our 'cache' at an empty store room above a store of a members'. We were very lucky that our public library decided to undergo a major renovation. We asked, and got a room donated to us that we now keep all our resources in, have our own librarian, assecssion coordinator & volunteer coordinator. We elected officers, charge $10. a year dues ($15.family) and send out newsletters quarterly. We have approximately 75 members from all over the country due to advertising on rootsweb, historical societies etc. Our room is open Mondays and Saturdays. Truthfully, it's tough to get people out on Sat. In July we'll have been opened a year. We have had a great year. We have had 2 computers, and one large file drawer donated to us as well as a few books. Now we are trying to purchase resources, slowly. We meet once a month and try to have a speaker since we have found it brings the membership out. We are not related to the historical society in town, unfortunately. They have a wonderful collection of not only county history but families. The board is a group of nice but set in their way people who are scared not only of change, but of losing their assets, I guess. We've try to get them to meet us half way but no go, yet. We have lots of people who are willing to help do cemetery lists, alot of Churches have let us copy their books and we ask for a family tree of our members and anyone visits us. We did write up bylaws, for our protection. It was difficult in the beginning and we still have to pull teeth to get people to chair different activities but it has not only been a great experience for the county but me and the people involved. My advice is, go for it! Butler Co appears to have great volunteers to help you get set up, do the leg work and paperwork. For anyone who is thinking about doing the newsletter, I do the Montour Co. Genealogical Society newsletter and the Historical newsletter. The newsletter are about 5 pages, go out 4 times a year and I try to make them informational (of course). I use old newspaper articles, parts of the Church records, etc. Other members contribute articles too. Its fun, I thoroughly enjoy it and it is not difficult, I usually find I have too much info. I am excited that Butler Co is thinking of a genealogy and I will be glad to join as soon as you get organized. I am sorry this is so lengthy, but want to encourage all of you. Good Luck. Lynn

    1. [PABUTLER-L] UPDATES-Library & Birth Records Project
    2. Pat
    3. Just wanted to give you all an update of these things. The construction on the Butler Public Library began about a month ago, with the official groundbreaking taking place 2 weeks ago. The fund raising drive is now 5 months old, and has mainly been targeted at the business community up until this point. Although, patron contributions have started to come in, some from the fine folks on this list. Your help is greatly appreciated! As of last week, they had raised 1.9 million dollars of the 3 million needed for the completion of this project. 550,000 of the remaining 1.1 million needed, will be received from an anonymous donor as they raise the other 550,000 from the community. I think this says volumes for the support of this area towards this library. Originally, it was felt that it would take at least 3 yrs. to raise this money. I'm sure the last 500,000 will seem to trickle in, but progress is being made everyday. The Birth Records Project is moving along. 14 letters of the alphabet have been copied and the first few have been mailed out. Those volunteers will receive instructions via email. Hoping to mail the next batch out to typists by Saturday.

Please respond to these questions to my email address not this list! sweeze@zoominternet.net 1. Are you a resident of this area that you would be able to possibly attend meetings or work on projects that physically have to be done in this county? 2. If you do not live in this area, are you willing to support this group with typing projects, proofreading, or monetary donations? 4. If we were to have a newsletter of some sort, are you willing to take charge of that endeavor? 5. Would you be willing to take on the responsibilities as on officer of this group? 6. Any constructive comments or suggestions will be openly accepted and appreciated here. Thanks, Pat
