    1. Re: [PABUTLER-L] John Truby 1772-1854
    2. You may already have this information, but there was a George Trube of Winfield Township, Butler County that wrote his will written in German in 1859. He listed three sons and two daughters: John H. (John Heinrich Trube/Truby), Christian and George, Catherine, wife of John Sandrock and Ann Elizabeth married to a Hartung. Two children of Lorenz Fisher, George and Maria Catherine were listed, too. In the History of Armstrong County, Her People, Past & Present, Cgo, Beers, 1914, vol. 1, p. 667, 668: George Truby, born in Germany married Barbara. Their children were; Catherine born 1826, died at Sarver Station, buried German Methodist Cemetery, wife of Jacob Sandrock. She had two daughters, Rosanna Sandrock and Anna Elizabeth Sandrock married to Dominicus Schrieber; Christian, born 7-28-1835, buried Freeport Cemetery; Anna Elizabeth, born 1802 married to Conrad Hartung; John Heinrich; George; Rosanna; Elizabeth, who died in Germany. 1. [PABUTLER-L] John Truby 1772-1854
    2. I looked up John Truby's neighbors in the 1800 and 1810 Censuses for Buffalo Township, Armstrong counties. The 1820 Census was in alphabetical order so I couldn't tell who his neighbors were. In the 1800 Census, his neighbors were William McGlaughlin, John Jack, Joseph Hamers, Daniel Green, William Jack, Adam Maxwell, George Ridle, JOHN TRUBY, ____ McConaughy, George Knox, Col William Parker, Adam Buffman, Adam Peters, John Peters. His place in that list, so close to Col. William Parker, tells me he was indeed in the Bear Creek area of Butler County/Armstrong County. Col. William Parker surveyed northern Armstrong/Butler County and homesteaded in (present) Parker Tp, Butler Co. Present day Parker, Armstrong Co, is contiguous with Parker Tp, Butler County. The 1810 Census for Buffalo Township is a different story. On the last page of four pages he is listed second to the bottom, as follows: Conrad Colmer, William Boal, David Colmer, Nicholas Best, James Matthews, William Morrison, John Cruikshanks, James Foreman, Nancy Ralston, James Graham, William Sloan, James Hill, Samuel Green, JOHN TRUBY, George Long. I don't recognize these names. I was hoping somebody would recognize these names and be able to tell me with a little more accuracy where these people lived, giving me present day markers, i.e., near Bruin, or south of Rte 8 or whatever. Thanks, Jane

    1. [PABUTLER-L] John Truby 1772-1854
    2. The problem is this: there is an extra (or two) John Truby(s) in the 1800, 1810, and 1820 Census (Armstrong Co., Butler Co., Westmoreland County) First I am going to just give you the census data for all the Trubys I found everywhere for the census dates below. I decided to throw in Dr. Simeon Hovey, just for geographical reference help: 1790 Westmoreland Co., Hempfield Tp, p 54, Christopher Truby, Esq., 3 males 16+, 1 males under 16, 3 females Mich'l Truby, 1 male 16 +, 1 male under 16, 2 females (son of Col. Christopher) Berks Co., Reading Tp, p16 Michl Truby, 1 male 16+, 2 females (Col Christopher's brother) 1800 Westmoreland Co., Hempfield Tp, p1023 Ch. Truby, Esq, 1 male 45+, 1 female 45+ (Col. Christopher Truby 1736-1802) Ch. Truby, Jun., 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 26 thru 44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 thru 25 (son of Col. Christopher) John Truby, 4 males under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 16 thru 44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 thru 15, 1 female 26 thru 44 (?son of Col. Christopher) NOTE: This John Truby is undoubtedly an erroneous entry and actually refers to Michael Truby, son of Col. Christopher. John Truby 1772-1854, son of Col. Christopher) moved up to Butler/Armstrong Co in 1800. The family breakdown does not fit his family. The family breakdown fits Michael Truby's family exactly. And, finally, there is no other listing for Michael Truby in this Census, esp. in Westmoreland County and Michael and his kids did not migrate to Armstrong Co until 1814, certainly after 1810. Butler Co., Slippery Rock Tp Jno Trueby, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 thru 44, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26 thru 44 (?son of Col. Christopher) Armstrong Co., Buffalo Tp John Truby, 1 male under 10, 1 male 26 thru 44, 1 female under 10 (?son of Col. Christopher) Jacob Truby, 1 female under 10, 1 male 16 thru 25, 1 female 16 thru 25 (son of Col. Christopher) NOTE: At this time, Buffalo Tp, Armstrong Co. covered the entire western area of the county west of the Allegheny River, clear up through (present) Hovey Tp at the tippy tippy top. Slipper Rock Tp, Butler Co., cover the entire northern part of Butler Co. and included the present townships of Allegheny and Parker. Grace Armitage Bush wrote: " From the History of Butler County, Page 577, we quote: 'John Truby and Magdalena (Mary Reamer) Truby were two of the pioneer settlers of Allegheny Township, Butler Co., Pa. They settled on a tract of land containing 400 acres of land in the above Township very early. They erected farm buildings and also erected a grist mill and operated the same along Bear Creek in the Northeastern section of Butler Co.' We seem to have another Truby settling close to Hovey Township in Armstrong County. This now is Mary Ann Hovey, Christopher and Susannah Lauffer Truby, Jacob and Mary Ann Lauffer Truby and Catharina Truby Roher with her second husband, John Marshall. I have no idea why John and Mary Truby left Butler County, but t hey must have gone to Gilpin Township, Armstrong County. In various notes Henry Truby says in his diary that Marshall Truby was born at Kelly Station in Allegheny Township, Armstrong County on November 19th, 1819." I don't have this 1883 History of Butler County, but I do have a 1895 History of Butler County by R. C. Brown & Co.: Page 63: 1808 Tax List, Butler County, Slippery Rock Township: John Truby, 400 acres, 2 horses or oxen, valuation $96, Tax $86 Page 671: "Allegheny Township: John Redick, Sr., entered 400 acres in 1799, after his migration from Westmoreland County. John Allen entered 200 acres about that time, upon which his son, John, was born in 1799. Samuel Coulter, who had 800 acres, with a cabin and small clearing, sold the land to Benjamin Law and moved to Ohio, where he died. Levi Gibson came in 1799, atarted a still house and made whisky for his neighbors. In 1803 he possessed 400 acres, four cows, one horse and the little distillery. John Truby had 400 acres on which he built a mill in 1805. Shortly after the organization of the county, John Turner located near the Armstrong county line, and society in the wilderness began to assume shape." Now the Bear Creek area where John Truby supposedly had his home or mill actually is physically both in present Parker Tp, Butler County, and present Parker/Perry Tp, Armstrong Co. So, I reasoned that John Truby's lands spilled over in both Butler and Armstrong Co. and that's why he ended up in the censuses for both counties (that sort of thing did happen to an ancestor on my mother's side of the family in Allegheny Co.) 1810 Westmoreland Co., Hempfield Tp. Michael Truby, 4 males under 10, 2 male 10 thru 15, 2 males 16 thru 25, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 thru 15, 1 female 16 thru 25, 1 female 45+ (son of Col. Christopher) Armstrong Co., Sugarcreek Tp, p394 Simeon Hovey, Dr., 1 male under 10, 1 male 16 thru 25, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 thru 25, 1 female 26 thru 44 Christopher Truby, 3 males 16 thru 25, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10 thru 15, 1 female 26 thru 44 (son of Col Christopher) Armstrong Co., Sugarcreek Tp, p398 Jacob Truby, 2 males under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 36 thru 44, 1 female 10 thru 15, 1 female 26 thru 44 (son of Col. Christopher) Armstrong Co., Buffalo Tp, p unknown John Truby, 4 males under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 26 thru 44, 1 female 10 thru 15, 1 female 26 thru 44 (?son of Col. Christopher) NOTE: I could not find a John Truby in the Butler County Census for Venango Tp, Allegheny Tp, Mercer Tp, Donegal Tp, Clearfield Tp, Slippery Rock Tp or Parker Tp By 1810, Buffalo Tp, Armstrong Co was reduced to the most southern area of the County and would no longer have been contiguous to the Bear Creek area of Butler/Armstrong counties. So, I think, John Truby had moved by 1810 to the southern part of Armstrong county, still west of the Allegheny River. Another explanation might be that the Census taker simply missed John Truby up there on Bear Creek and (less likely) the John Truby in Buffalo Tp is another John Truby, say John Henry Truby, the son of Michael Truby. However, as best we know John Henry Truby moved to Kittanning/Manor Township on the east side of the Allegheny -- after 1814. Now comes the kicker: 1820 Westmoreland Co., Hempfield Tp. No Trubys Butler Co., Venango Tp (now Allegheny Tp) Andrew Truby, 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 to 16, 1 male 26 to 25, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 26 NOTE: Andrew is probably the son of Jacob Truby, the brother of Col. Christopher Huntingdon Co., Franklin Tp, p95 Eve Truby, 1 male under 10, 5 females under 10, 1 female 16 to 26 NOTE: Eve is probably the daughter of Jacob Truby, the brother of Col. Christopher. Jacob's will put Eve in charge of his other minor children when he died in 1814. Eve Truby, the widow of Michael Truby (brother or son of brother of Col Christopher) was in Berks County, but did not appear in the Census. Armstrong Co., Kittanning, p309 Michael Truby, Jr., 1 male under 10, 3 males 16 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 18 (son of Michael Truby and grandson of Col. Christopher) Michael Truby, Sr., 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 18, 2 males 16 to 26, 1 male 26 to 45, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 18, 1 female 26 to 45 (son of Col. Christopher) NOTE: I could not read the Sr. or Jr. designations very well and could have these two Michaels reversed. The family age/sex breakdowns don't seem to fit either way. But, since the Michaels are not my concern at the moment, I will let that problem go. Jacob Truby, 1 male 16 to 26, 3 females under 10, 1 female 16 to 18 (son of Michael Truby, Sr., and grandson of Col. Christopher) Armstrong Co., Sugarcreek Tp. Christopher Truby, 1 male under 10, 1 male 45+, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 26 (son of Col. Christopher) Christopher Truby, Jr., 1 male 16 to 26, 1 female 10 to 16 (son of Jacob Truby 1773-1857, and grandson of Col. Christopher) Jacob Truby, 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 26, 1 male 45+, 3 females under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16 to 18, 1 female 16 to 26 (son of Col. Christopher) Semion Hovey [sic], 1 male 10 to 16, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10 to 16, 1 female 16, to 26 Armstrong Co., Plumcreek Tp John Truby, Sr., 2 males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 18, 2 males 16 to 26, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 18, 1 female 26 to 45, 1 female 45 + NOTE: I am fairly certain this is the son of Michael Truby and the grandson of Col. Christopher, but I have to admit that the ages don't fit well. Maybe there are some grandchildren or servants in this census entry. If he is the son of Michael Truby, he was the Sheriff of Armstrong Co., and Grace Armitage Bush says he lived Kittanning/Manor Tp. He was born 1784 and died 1785. Armstrong Co., Allegheny Tp, p261 John Truby, Sr., 2 males under 10, 2 males 10 to 16, 1 male 16 to 18, 2 males 16 to 26, 1 male 45+, 1 female under 10, 1 female 16 to 18, 1 female 26 to 45, 1 female 45+ Armstrong Co., Buffalo Tp, p299 John Truby, 3 males under 10, 1 male 16 to 26, 2 males 26 to 45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 16 to 18 NOTE: Which of the two (or three) John Trubys in the 1820 Census is the son of Col Christopher, the one in Allegheny Tp or the one in Buffalo Tp? And, who the heck is the other John Truby? Grace Armitage Bush makes the point that Marshall Truby, son of John Truby and grandson of Col. Christopher, was born in Kelly Station, Armstrong Co., PA, in 1819. Kelly Station is in Allegheny Tp. and Allegheny Tp was never part of Buffalo Tp. Allegheny Tp is on the east side of the Allegheny River. Buffalo Tp is on the west side of the Allegheny River. It bothers me that I have a John Truby in three consecutive censuses in Buffalo Township, Armstrong Co. I've run out of explanations to account for a John Truby in both Buffalo Tp and Allegheny Tp in 1820 in Armstrong Co. If you look through the descendants of Col. Christopher, you will see that there are no other available John Trubys, i.e., old enough, to be in any of these three censuses. In the 1830 Census, there is no John Truby in Buffalo Tp. And, there is a John Truby in Allegheny Tp, as follows: John Truby, 1 male 5 to 10, 1 male 10 to 15, 3 males 20 to 30, 1 male 40 to 50, 1 female 5 to 10, 1 female 40 to 50. Well, that's the problem. Any thoughts about solving this?
