Alma Muriel's parents were Alfred B. Grossman (1860 = )and Sarah Stevenson (1858-1941) Alfred was Sarah's second husband of three. His parents were Simon Peter Grossman (1820-1884) and Mariah Bennett (1822 -). Sarah's parents were Michael Moore Stevenson (1823-1901) and Rachel Elizabeth Greer (1817-1900). Hi Penny, Alma Muriel Grossman is familiar to me, but I can't remember where she fits. Perhaps I can locate her through her parents. I did find that Alma and Francis applied on 2-21-1919 for a marriage license at the courthouse in Butler, Pa. It can be found in book 33, page 131. Perhaps these articles in the Butler Citizen would interest you: "GROSSMAN REUNION The Descendants of Benedict Grossman who settled in Cherry township in the year 1797 will hold their annual reunion at the residence of Ashley W. Grossman, two miles south of Slippery Rock borough on August 18,1909. All who know themselves to be a branch of this tree are requested to come and bring their friends along. COMMITTEE." (BC, Wed., 8-11-1909) "GROSSMAN REUNION One of the largest of the annual reunions of a Butler county family is that of the Grossman descendants. This year's reunion was held yesterday at the home of Ashley Grossman, Slippery Rock township, when three hundred members of the family congregated coming from all parts of the country. The place for the next reunion will be decided upon by the committee in charge, after which due notice will be given." (from BC, Fri., 8-20-1909, p. 5)

Glee, I have the Grossman on my line and I would like to thank you for the information you posted, I had the names but not the information. If you have any other I would appreciate it, I connect into the line on Sarah Caroline Grossman who was married to James Dunn she was born 1848. Nancy, Your ancestress, Benedict and Betsy Grossman's daughter, Elizabeth "Betsey" Grossman was born about 1785, died in 1888, and was married to Robert Black. Benedict's parents, Simon, Sr., born about 1720, and Margaretha, born about 1725, were both natives of Palantine, Germany. (Simon, Sr. married twice.) They sailed on Captain Adolph de Grove's ship, Jacob, that left "from Amsterdam, last from Shields." Benedict was born, enroute to America, somewhere on the Atlantic Ocean in September 1749 . The family were to have located at Mass Creek, Adams County, Pa. near the present site of Harrisburg. (There was a Simon Grossman naturalized in Philadelphia in 1749.) If one were looking to find where they located in eastern Pa., keep in mind that county and state boundaries changed. (Part of the state of Va. became York, County, Pa.) Benedict's brother, Simon, was married in Frederick County, Md. His sister, Maria Margaretha "Peggy" was born in New Providence, Township, Montgomery County, Pa. (I'm not sure, but she may have been the one that was captured by Indians, considered a squaw, later married a Bennett and had seven sons.) His sister, Polly, was married in York County. Benedict's wife, Betsey, daughter of Johan Wendell and Catherine Seibert was born before 1750, one source has 1749 in Bethel Township, Berks County, Pa. Another source has her born in York Co., while another has Va. (The surname can be found as Sivert or Stivert.) I show all of their children born in Hamiltonban Township, York Co., Pa. Betsey was confirmed in 1766 at the age of nineteen (which would make her birth about 1747). During the French and Indian War of 1756-1763 she was captured by Indians at York, kept seven years, returned at age thirteen to friends at Ft. Pitt. Glee
I am searching for information regarding my ancestors on my Mother's side. David Russell (b. 1747 Letterkenny, IRE, d. 23 Oct 1826, Venango Twp., Butler Cty). He is reported to have married Isabelle Harper of Westmoreland County. Their son David was born around 1787 and his son James E (b. 1833-34) I believe was my G/Grandfather but I am not certain. I would really appreciate any information that anyone has that could help me. My Grandfather James Ebenezer Russell, (b.1862-1922) moved from Butler to Beaver County. I am trying to ascertain whether or not James E (1833 above ) is his father or not. Thanks to anyone that may have anything on this. Bob Reese, Santee, CA

Thanks for all the information, Glee. I do not have Grossmans that I know of. However, my Robert Black of Parker Twp. was supposed to be a cousin of Robert Black of Cherry Twp. who was married to a Grossman. I know they were supposed to come from Huntingdon County, but wondered if you knew where your Grossmans originated--old counry wise. Again, thanks! I was at the New Castle Library yesterday going through cemetery books looking for McCrearys. I don't remember the name of the cemetery, but it is in New Galilee, PA. There were a lot of McGowens in the listings. I only noticed because my cousin was a McCowin, and I've already emailed her about them. Not first names, just that I saw the McGowens and thought that it might just be a variant spelling of McCowin. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Iris Wakeling" <iris_w@efn.org> To: <PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 1:36 PM Subject: Re: [PABUTLER-L]1790 Census > Would these people be living Butler Co? > I'm interested in the * items. > > Microfilm 568149 1790 Allegheny Co., Pa Census > Composed of Washington and Part of Alleghany Co. > 1st day of Aug 1790 and 10th of April 1791 > Page 149 > > Columns 1 Free white Male of mature years > 2 Free white Male under sixteen years > 3 Free white Female including those of > the families > 4All other free persons > 5 Slaves > 6 Total > > > Samuel Stewart 123006 > James Chambers 113005 > Sarah Redick 003003 > John Hage, Esq. 212016 > Hugh Workman 504009 > Samuel Baird 222006 > Samuel Shannon 2380013 > David Bradford, Esq. 3140210 > Hugh Wilson 3142010 > John Ackerson 403007 > Samuel Ashlin 124007 > Andrew (Lo)casinger 2130410 > James Marshal, Esq 2250110 > William Muthish?? 114006 > John Dodd 4330111 > Alexander Addison, Esq. 103004 > William Marshal 243009 > Thomas Jefferys 111003 > James? Glee, My Critchlows were definitely from Butler County and they stayed there! My Grandmother's father was George and Mary. They did leave Butler County and moved to Tidioute in Warren County, where my grandmother was born. They eventually moved to the North Side of Pittsburgh, where my family remains. I moved to Mars about 20 years ago and live in my paternal grandfather's house. We are so blessed to have so much information about the Critchlow's. My Mother has been involved with many Critchlow reunions at Camp Redwing. There was talk about moving it to my place, but that has not happened, yet. Don't know when I would ever have the time for that! I have seen the Dixmont Cemetery site with Lucinda Critchlow's name on it. It is hard to place her as the same person because of the age. I will have to investigate it further. It would be very sad to know that my great great grandmother died in a State Hospital. I wonder what will happen to the cemetery, now that there is going to be a Wal-Mart on the old Dixmont Hospital site! Anyway, thank you so much for the help. Will keep in touch with any new information. Barb

Barb, My grandfather's eldest sister married John Carner Critchlow. Were your Critchlows from the Butler area? Did they leave the area? What is the time period for George W. and Mary E. It might make it easier to find them. The courthouse death registration book has a Lucinda J. Critchlow, age 58, married, born Butler Co., died after 10 month paralysis at Dixmont on 7-6-1900 and was buried there the next day. At Prospect, Franklin Township in the 1900 Butler County Census a Lucinda was shown, born May 1843 in Pa., age 57, married 20 years, had three children, all living, wife of John, born April 1848 in Pa., age 52, bricklayer, married 20 years, rents home. John's mother Elizabeth was living with them, born September 1824 in Pa., age 75, widow, had 6 children, five living. Happy Researching, Glee
