I'll be at the Mercer County Genealogical Society at the Shenango Valley Library in Sharon on Tuesday, May 28th from about 10:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. with computer and scanner, if you have old photos that you'd like to see added to Butler County Old Photos.... or any of the Western PA Old Photos sections...or our new Ohio Old Photos site. Bring the photos, we'll scan them, and you can take them back home with you. Also, bring some floppy disks, if you'd like a copy of the photo on disk. We can do that at the same time. If you have other material that you'd like to have added to either of the Mercer, Crawford or Lawrence County USGenWeb sites, bring that along, too. Last June, when we set up at the library, we scanned over a hundred photos, obituaries, headstone photos, newspaper articles and other items... and met some really nice folks! Thanks to the Mercer County Genealogical Society for inviting us! Look forward to seeing you! Teri USGenWeb Coordinator for Mercer, Lawrence and Crawford Counties Western PA Old Photos p.s. For those of you who might not know, I live in Houston, so I don't get to do this too often. :) map to the library http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?addtohistory=&countrycode=250&country=U S&address=11+N+Sharpsville+Ave&city=Sharon&state=pa&zipcode=&submit.x=69&sub mit.y=12 (two line URL)

The 1874 atlas is online and can be found at: www.rootsweb.com/~pabutler
The atlas of 1874 by Hopkins has a drawing of Saxonburg. The streets are unnamed. There is an "A. Steuben" is shown at two sites. It's a neat "little" drawing showing property holders of the time, also showing the location of school, cemetery, Lutheran church, Lutheran parsonage, hotels, paint shop, woodworking shop, marbleworks, cabinet warerooms, and office of the city.
Checked the 1909 Butler County History. It gives two Stuebgens arriving as part of the group from Saxony with the Roeblings. It states that in the spring of 1832, 300 families left Saxony to colonize 16,000 acres of land in Jefferson Twp. Those who settled in what became Saxonburg included A. Steubgen and Christian Steubgen. Saxonburg was laid out in the traditional plan of a Saxon village. The Church is at the eastern end of Main Street. Originally all the plots of land went from Main Street north or south to parallel streets. Each person owned a long narrow plot of several acres. The north street is now Water Street. I can't remember the name of the southern street but someone out there must know. Homes and businesses were built against the street with no front yards. -----Original Message----- From: BethStuebgen <IAMBETH@ATTBI.COM> To: PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com <PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Tuesday, May 14, 2002 6:19 PM Subject: Re: [PABUTLER-L] 1916 Farm Directory >Thank you so much for your suggestions! >I will certainly follow up on these!! >Beth M. Found this while sorting through my files. Hope you enjoy!! I WANT 1. I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Stuebenhoffmanschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. 2. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees), had their photographs taken once a year--subsequently putting said photographs in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. 3. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemetaries. 4. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. 5. I want relatives who served as councilmen, school teachers, county clerks, and town historians. 6. I want relatives who "religiously" wrote in the family bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship to every visitor. 7. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. 8. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they ever touched. 9. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. 10. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!! (Author Unknown) ===== "To the world you might be one person, But to one person you just might be the world." Glee, I don't know if this would have anything to do with my line, but I'll check it out anyway. My 3rd great grandmother's third husband was Henry Freuhling. This is about all I know about her right now. I am on vacation in a couple of weeks and will have the chance to go up to the library. I work at the hospital and can maybe stop on my way home also. Barb, There is a book at the Butler Public Library titled, The Descendants of Henry & Elizabeth Freeling from Germany, 1972, by Donna Crummy Atwell and Betty Crummy Graham. Would this be your line? Glee

Beth, Have you tried the Butler County Histories? The library in Butler has a great obit file. It's being updated all the time. They started with some of the older papers. I believe they are up in the 1970s now. If you contact them, they like only three requests at a time because they have so many. They do them on a first come, first serve basis. When you get three, then three more can be requested. The Butler courthouse has a wealth of information. The birth and death registrations only cover about 20 years. In 1906 they were no longer registered with the county, but were registered with the state. There might be estate files. Some give a wealth of information while others may only be receipts. Deeds may be helpful. I like to check them out. If they were from the Saxonburg, there are books about the are. Sometimes churches are great sources. The churches of my German Lutherans and Catholics seemed to have kept better records. It seems to me that the churches for my Presbyterian relatives lost the records to mice or the churches burned. Have you tried leaving message on some of the genealogy sites? Think about some of these. Glee
Hi Helen, I also descend from Benedict Grossman & Betsey Seibert through their daughter Catherine who married Jacob Kissinger. I did not have a firm date of death for Betsey Seibert and you seem to have 1830. Could you please help as to where that came from and if you have a month and day? If you would like to exchange information I would be glad to. I have considerable info on the family. Take care. Jerry Thayer 311 Willow Oaks Blvd. Hampton, VA 23669-1531 HJThayer@aol.com
Beth, You can search at ancestry by surname or use the AIS census index for that search. You can do it by each census year. Other Butler County indexes are online at: www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2 and the 1883 and 1895 Butler County Histories are online at: www.rootsweb.com/~pabutler Pat

Go to www.ancestry.com fill in the blanks and you'll find all kinds of stuff on your surname.
I "lucked" on to that one at www.google.com I went to the Advanced Search area and then entered STUEBGEN in the Exact Words area. Somebody out there must know if there are earlier or later versions of the same thing. And I was worried because it was only 1880, I thought you were looking for closer to 1916's.
