    1. [PABUTLER-L] Krohn's Cemetery, and Oak Grove Lutheran Church/Gaertner, Kirschler
    2. I am new to the list and would like to know the location of both Krohn's Cemetery and Oak Grove Lutheran Church --- late 1800s through early 1900s. Either or both names may have changed, perhaps even more than once. Names I am researching in Butler County are: Gaertner and Kirschler. George Gaertner was my ggg-grandfather, lived in Cranberry Township and was a member of the Oak Grove Lutheran Church. He was buried in Krohn's Cemetery, probably sometime around 1910-1913. Thanks, Cindy

    2. Rick, The Butler Library has a wonderful collection of newspapers. There is an index file for many years of obituaries. Copies can be made for a quarter, but keep in mind, that one machine makes better copies than the others. Glee

Would it be okay to forward your E-mail address and let her get in touch with you? Please let me know. she might not like me handing out her address. We share a Beatty line. Glee

    2. Rick, I will hunt the other article out and get it to you. Adam Smith died at age 55, in 1899, from injuries received when hit by a chain that broke while transporting a load of tubing up McCalmont Hill on the way to the Petersville oil fields. The chain knocked him to the ground, rupturing his stomach. His 77 year old mother-in-law, Maria Byers, born in Germany, died at his home in Butler in 1888. She was buried beside her husband at Saxonburg. Glee

    3. Hi Glee, In regards to the Bulter Citizen, is it on Microfilm? The Erie Daily Times is, and anyone can go to the public library to browse and photocopy any article. If so could you let me know where I can go to do this. There were many things I would want to look up. Also could I bother you for a photocopy of this article. Let me know how much for postage and all. It seems that my great grandmother's parents were William Barnhart Byers and Mary Elizabeth Helper. William's Father was John Byers, married a Susan Barnhart. Sue died in 1896 William Died one day when the family was moving. He fell off the wagon and hit his head which caused his death 21 November 1906 I believe. This could also have been my other Grand father Alex Baxter I believe this date was 15 May 1889. . I would like to stop down to research it in the paper, just to make sure as I've heard conflicting stories. It is possible that this John Byers was the father of the John Byers in the article. Thank you Glee for your reply. If there is anything I can do for you , please give me a shout. 2. Rick, Sorry, I haven't anything on your McCurdy line, but I'll check with my friend. If she has, she can contact you, if that is okay. I do have some obituaries. I noticed the name is spelled Macurdy, McCurdy, and McKirdy. A sixteen inch long article from an 1893 issue of the Butler Citizen is titled A Tale of Woe. Since it is lengthy, I'll give you the gist of it. In 1864 John Byers returned home to Clearfield Co., Pa. after serving 3 years in the Union Army. e married a pretty school teacher of the area in 1865. Her name was Sarah E. Sutchell. When Sarah's father died, she inherited a little farm in East Mahoning Tp., Indiana Co., Pa. She and John removed with their young children to the farm. while John was out in the fields, Sarah began the wash. She sat a pail of boiling water by the wash, propped the youngest baby with rugs on the floor, to aid it in sitting, but it crawled out, overturned the bucket, and died a very short time later in the day from the scalding burns. Two years later, another child aged three, fell into an open grate, catching its clothes on fire and causing death. In time their children numbered seven. The morose father blamed the wife for the deaths and began to assault her. In time, the eldest child, a boy aged 16, began to defend his mother. One day when it happened again, the father threatened the son, and the 16 year old picked up the gun and shot his father. The boy was tried in the Indiana courts in 1886. He was acquitted, but life was unhappy so he moved to Colorado. The mother died, age 47, in February 1893, convulsing terribly. The symptoms of a neighbor described hydrophobia. After the mother's funeral, the next oldest boy, Perry, went to look after the horses, was kicked by a colt and was expected to die from the injuries. At the same time Mabel, 12, the eldest daughter had a fatal illness. [at the date of the writing of the newspaper 3-3-1893]. The last sentence in the article notes that Petro is living and Mabel is recovering. Well, so much for the Byers. You didn't give a time frame, but you might want to check the censuses. That is a nice offer to do lookups in Erie or Crawford Co., Pa. Thank you. Happy researching. Glee

    3. Hi Glee, I don't break anyone's trust either, It was just an idea if the owners do not mind. I have come across some great material with the owners permission, and have seen some great stuff go by too. as for the pedigree for the McCurdy line. I only had one gg aunt who married into that surname. Abigail Byers Laskey McCurdy. born in Chicora, Pa and did reside sometime in Butler before moving to Erie, This info is so new I just found out about it on Friday of this past week. If there is anyone you know that might be able to help it would be appreciated. Also let anyone know if they need some help in the Erie or Crawford area to look me up. I do quite a bit for free, but there are some requests that are quite lengthy that I ask something for mileage or supplies. Is that fair? Personally I don't know, but no one has ever complained. 2. Hi Jim, I believe we met at a Campbell Family genealogy workshop in Greensburg a few years ago, and ran into each other later at a Slippery Rock Heritage genealogy workshop. I am a member of Lisa's Campbell web site, too. That large group would enjoy these pictures, for they are in such wonderful condition. The owner and two cousins all from different states, are trying to name the people. That's why they sent them to me. They only arrived a couple days ago. I will make a list of those interested, but will need her permission to share them. Hopefully someone from that line will see the query, get in contact, and help identify them. Please keep in touch. If you are in the Butler area, come check the pictures out. Glee

    3. Hi Glee I live up in Erie, a good stones throw up the road. My Grandmother and her parents are from butler. My great great grandfather was the chief Burgess there a couple of years, he was also part owner of the first powerplant in Bulter. The other thing that you can do with the pictures is have them scanned onto a computer and then put on disk. My wife is in marketing and I user her software all the time. You can bring back the black and white color and correct any problems in the photo.( most any problem anyway). Most any Marketing firm in the area should be able to scan the photos, as well as some computer stores. Actually most anyone with a scanner on their computer can do it and save them as a JPEG My great grandparents had quite a large family. My grandmother had 13 aunts and uncles before marriage. Some of the surnames are Baxter, McCurdy, Laskey,Byers, Miller, and a couple of others that I can not remember off of the top of my head. I definitely would like to learn more about the area as it seems I have quite a few relations still in the area Keep in touch Rick ----- Original Message ----- From: <GrannyGlee@aol.com> To: <PABUTLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, July 28, 2002 10:13 AM Subject: Re: [PABUTLER-L] John Hall & Sidney J.
