    1. [PABUTLER-L] LAISNIE? or LAISNIR? -- do either of these spellings of a surname strike a memory cord?
    2. Lady Bonita
    3. I just received the death certificate os Mrs. Jane SUMNEY or SUMMONEY and she states her mother's maiden name is LAISNIE or LAISNIR .. this one has me thrown for a loop .. does anyone recognize this as a spelling of a surname? I am not sure where they married but they lived in Butler Co, in 1840-1850 .. I believe it is either Donagal or Clearfield (not sure which is her husband .. William or Lenny SUMMONEY. She is living with her newly married (and probably pregnant daughter and son-in-law, Samuel MOHLER. Any stretches of the imagination as to what her mother's surname is ... I would welcome all potentials. Bonita ******************************************************* Lady Bonita -- Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas, USA *******************************************************

    1. [PABUTLER-L] Thanks Pat
    2. Kim Lloyd
    3. Pat: First, let me thank you for your response, and tell you that your work is greatly appreciated. Secondly, I wasn't faulting, and never would fault your work for possibly missing something. That amount of work is staggering. The answer is probably option 2, but I didn't know for sure how it worked. I have a clearer picture now, but have one more question: What if there is joint ownership (if there was such a thing in the 19th century?) of property between husband and wife and the husband dies--would there be an Estate filing? Thank you again. Kim

    1. [PABUTLER-L] Probate and Wills
    2. Pat
    3. Kim, Probate records are more commonly called Estates in this area. An estate record includes the will if there was one, where a will book entry is only the will. If a person owned property but there is no estate listed on the online index, you could be dealing with two different scenarios. Number 1: I missed it when the index was typed. (also known as human, I"m in a hurry, error) Number 2: The property had already been signed over to a family member, mostly likely a son, before the person died. This was a very common practice. If you can be patient a week or two, and send the name you are interested in to sweeze@zoominternet.net, I can check out these options and the deed indexes at the courthouse to see if anything shows up that way. 1. [PABUTLER-L] Probate and Wills
    2. Kim Lloyd
    3. Hello listers. My Butler County surnames are: GREENAWALT, MAGER, MONTAG/MONDAY, and possibly GRAFF I am somewhat new to family history research, so I have many questions. I am confused about Probate and Wills. I've read a little on the subject, but it hasn't sunk in yet. My understanding is that Wills are a part of the Probate process. Is that correct? And is the Butler County Estate Index that is located on the Butler Co. rootsweb website an index to Probate records? What would explain a person not indexed if there was property involved? And finally, for now: Are later Probate records, that aren't available through the LDS Libraries, accessible (long distance) through the county courthouse or local library? Thanks in advance. 2. Davidson
    3. Seeking info/ances/desc of Jane Emery, b: c1803/04, Worth Twp, Butler Co, PA - d: 24Apr1885, PA; bur: Clarksville Cem, Mercer Co, PA; d/o Thomas Humphreys and Ruth Elizabeth Coulter (6Dec1770 - 1848, d/o James and Margaret Coulter). There is a reference to Jane ["Butler County History-1883", chap. 37, p. 347, re a bio-sketch of her father Thomas] as being a widow at the time of her fathers death in 1939. The bio-sketch states, "...Jane, now widow of Thomas EMORY, living with her son in Franklin, PA..." Other sources state that Jane was married to Jacob Emery. From the DOBs of her children I can only conclude that Jane married a second time. This is how I list her children: Children of Thomas Emery: (?) Washington Emery, b: 1833 Ann M. Emery, b: 1834 (Widowed by 1839) Children of Jacob Emery: (?) Ruth Caroline Emery, b: 21Jul1841 (m:James Cordon Stewart) Henry H. Emery, b: 1845 Lavinia Emery, b: (unk) (m: Fay? Vernon) Millie Emery, b: (unk) (m: unk Millhizer) Fanny/ie Emery, b: (unk)(m:Dawson Moore) (source: L Stewart/Jan1999) I would appreciate anyone either confirming or disproving/correcting the above information. 2. George Sweeney
    3. I have been trying to locate the parents of a George Sweney/Sweeney/Sweeny/Swaney and George's siblings in either Butler Co. or nearby Allegheny Co., PA during the years abt. 1790 through 1890. George Sweeney was born abt 1822 in either Butler or Allegheny Co., and married a Satiah Ann Criner, born 12 July 1821 (died West Deer Twp., Allegheny Co., PA 15 May 1910). Satiah was born in Middlesex Twp., Butler Co., PA to John and Nancy (Reed) Criner. George died sometime between 1880 and 1900 W. Deer Twp or Fawn Twp. Other names of families being researched in this same area are: CRINER, HAZLETT, PORTER, TODHUNTER, SWEENEY (with spelling variations), LARGE, THOMPSON, NORRIS, FREDLEY, and FULTON. I would be glad to share the research findings I have on these names. Please contact me directly to my private e-mail: gsweeney@neb.rr.com. George J.
