    1. [PABUTLER-L] Directions to Meeting
    2. Pat
    3. For those of you who requested driving directions to the Organizational meeting of the Genealogical Society here goes. If you are coming out of Butler, head west of Route 68 (Evans City Road). At the intersection where the new Sheetz is on your left and St. John's Church is on your right, turn left onto Meridian Road. Go straight on Meridian Road until you see the Meridian Station on your right and the side of an old stone church ahead on your left. There are two roads on the left that come together in front of that church. You are going to turn left onto the second one. That is Highland Avenue. You'll go about 2 blocks and see a big red brick church on your right. That's the Meridian U. P. Church. Park in the lot and enter the door towards the back of the church. We will not be having snacks or drinks at this meeting. We will do our best to get to the business at hand and finish early. I know some are traveling to come to this meeting and some of us get up in the middle of the night for work. Thanks to all for your interest! Pat www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2

    1. Re: [PABUTLER-L] Margaret GILE (or possibly GILL, GALO or McGILL) and Robert AIKEN
    2. Lady Bonita
    3. I would concentrate first on getting all the census records for Robert Aiken. When his family grows by leaps and bounds and some are older than 10 years old, but were not on the last census, that would be a good time to look at the church where he was a minister. Surely, there will be something in the church records to indicate when they came to live them, her family was probably members of the church, so the church members would have reached out to them. 1. [PABUTLER-L] Margaret GILE (or possibly GILL, GALO or McGILL) and Robert AIKEN
    2. I am trying to establish the parentage of my ancestor, Margaret Gile (or possibly Galo, Gill or McGill). My 2nd great grandmother, Margaret, was born in Harrisville, PA, on May 15,1826 according to her death record. Her married name was Margaret McCracken, as she married Samuel McCracken. They were married sometime in the late 1850's, possibly in Butler Co. By 1860 they were living in Connoquennesing Twp. In 1850 Margaret was single and living in Connoquennesing Twp. with her foster family, Robert Aiken and his wife Elizabeth. This matches with a story passed down in our family that Margaret and her siblings were raised by a Presbyterian minister and his wife after their parents were killed in a forest or prairie fire. I don't know if the fire happened in Mercer Twp., Connoquennesing Twp. or elsewhere. I'm also not certain of Margaret's birth name or the names of her parents who were killed. After her family moved to Loda, IL in 1863, a history there identifies here birth name as Margaret GALO. But the 1850 census identifies her as Margaret GILE. I find a lot of people named GILL and McGILL in both Mercer and Connoquennessing Twps. in the early days, but I'm not sure if they are the same family. Can anyone offer some advice on where I may find more info on Margaret so that I can identify her parents and when they were killed? Was there a newspaper in the county during the 1820's, 30's and 40's that might mention a fire tragedy? Were the names GILL, or McGILL sometimes spelled GILE or GALO? Are there foster or adoption records for Butler Co. that early? Any help would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Norm Alder Spokane, WA

    1. [PABUTLER-L] reply -the Hockenberry conspiracy
    2. Jackie, Do you know whether any of the children of Joseph HOCKENBERRY & Elizabeth KENNEDY went to Franklin Co IN.? I copied from a census sheet (1850) which shows Peter HOCKENBERRY age 60 and Ann age 64 both b NJ. When I hurriedly copied these names I believe Townson WEST, Josiah WILSHER, Noah HOCKENBERRY age 24 and spouse, Lydia, son James and Wm. MILLSBAUGH age 9 were in the same household, in Brookville Twp. I was interested in the HOCKENBERRYS as there was a document in which John WYNN and Peter HOCKENBERRY are appt'd admxs. of the will of Hugh WEST. Other names listed are Isaac PRICE & Thomas KENNEDY. I had thought this Thomas KENNEDY was my gg-grandfather as he had purchased land in Twp 16, Range 6, in Hancock Co IN. However, my Thomas K's land was in a different section. After viewing Franklin Co. Thomas's will, it was evident he died abt 1850 and my Thomas lived until 1876, residing in Buck Crk Twp., Hancock Co IN. I am still pondering whether there is a relationship between the two Thomas KENNEDYS. There are many references to HOCKENBERRYS in Franklin Co IN. which may give you a clue about some of the people you are researching. Hope this helps Virgene in northwest Indiana In a message dated 1/1/2003 8:53:39 PM US Eastern Standard Time, jackie_fry99@yahoo.com writes: > Joseph married FIRST Elizabeth Kennedy and they had 6 children. 3. Actually, Joseph C. Cowden died in Ohio so I would have to look for the obituary there but thanks for the suggestion. If anyone does happen across a Hockenberry that's attached to a Cowden please let me know. COWDEN was my paternal grandmother's maiden name and I would really like to find some connections to this line. I only know that Joseph was born in Portersville, Butler County, Pennsylvania 11 Aug 1867 and that he married Lydia Amelia Lepley in the 1890s. They were married for about 10 years before they had my grandmother Arrea and she was their only child. Any help in that area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. Cowden born 11 Aug 1867 in Portersville, Butler, PA. died 3 Nov 1930 in Minerva, Stark, Ohio. According to his death certificate his mother's maiden name was HOCKENBERRY. His father's name is unknown but I can assume it was Cowden. 3. Hi Jackie, Have you tried getting an obituary for your great grandfather, Joseph C. Cowden? It just might mention his siblings names and this could help when you search census records. You would need to find a library near where he died. Perhaps someone on the list knows. If Porterville is near the city of Butler, The Butler Area Public Library would be the place to write for it. They have been very helpful to me in the past as most other libraries have. Also, someone on the list might have the 1870 census index. If they could find any COWENs in that area you could look on the census records. I do have some info on the line but I only have it because my great-great grandmother Mary Jane Lepley married a Joseph Hockenberry after her first husband Henry Lepley died in the Civil War. Here's the rundown of my Joseph and his line going back to Peter Hockenberry, I hope this helps but you can e-mail me off list for the full boat. > > Peter Hockenberry married Anna Catherina and they had 8 children, one of those being John Hockenberry. > > John married Hannah Kelley and they had 8 children one of those being Casper Hockenberry and another being Jane. > > Casper married Margaret Shaffer and they had 8 children one of those being Joseph Hockenberry. > > Joseph married FIRST Elizabeth Kennedy and they had 6 children.
