We would like to announce a small 'contest' for all members of the Butler County Genealogical Society. We are searching for a LOGO to use and would like to give everyone the chance to submit their idea for it. You may sketch out your idea, do it on the computer, or if your sketching is something best left to others, you may submit your idea in writing. We will have one person take all the logos that are submitted, make them all the same size and quality for voting at the June 10 meeting. Submissions must be received by May 20 to be included in the voting. Please mail your drawings to the: Butler County Genealogical Society P O Box 662 Butler, PA 16003

The Butler Area Public Library will be closed next week, and reopen March 31 due to renovations that are nearing completion. There is a small possibility that they will be open on Monday and Tuesday, March 45 and 25, but patrons should check before venturing in.
We now have available the membership forms for the Butler County Genealogical Society. They will be available online soon, but if you would like to have the forms now, please email me at sweeze@zoominternet.net. Some of you who requested them previously found them in your emails today. We will also have the forms available at the next meeting, which will be held on April 8, 2003 at 7 p.m. at the Heritage Center on New Castle Street in Butler. Glenna Walters, Prothonotary of Butler County will be presenting our program that evening. She will be letting us know what type of resources are available in her office and also will be bringing the naturalization index with her. We have been experiencing some problems with updates on our website and are working to overcome them very soon. Although we had not planned on doing this, I am going to post here the minutes of our last meeting just to keep everyone updated. By the time of the April 8th meeting, you should be able to access the minutes online at www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2. Butler County Genealogical Society Minutes of the March 11th, 2003, Meeting Open Mrs. Pat Collins called the meeting to order at approximately 7pm at the Butler County Historical Society Heritage Center, located on West New Castle Street in Butler, Pennsylvania. Pat introduced to those attending Mr. Gary Anderson, who will hold the position of Treasurer and Mrs. Joyce Rauschenberger who will hold the position of Secretary during this organizational year. Mr. Curt Rauschenberger was introduced as our appointed Program Director. Mr. Ed Monnie was not in attendance of the meeting. Communication We are still having some communication issues. There was trouble with the website in that no updates or changes were made to the Genealogical Society page during the last month. A notice of our meeting date was given to the Butler Eagle in plenty of time for them to include it in the Community Bulletin Board column of the Focus sections, but they chose not to print our announcement. Pat stated that every effort would be made to get these communication problems corrected before our next meeting. Minutes Minutes of the previous meetings will be posted to the Butler county web page (www.rootsweb.com/~pabutle2) but will not be read at a current meeting. We encourage everyone to go to the web page and look over the minutes. If there are corrections or additions to the minutes, a motion will be made at the next following meeting to handle the issue. Membership Fees We had previously set the prices for Individual and Family memberships, but failed to set a price for the Lifetime Membership. After a brief discussion regarding costs and average amount of time such costs would need to be covered by the Lifetime Membership dues, Curt Rauschenberger made a motion to set the price of a Lifetime Membership at Three Hundred Dollars ($300). Gary Anderson seconded the motion, which was approved by all present. Bylaws Pat Miller made a motion to accept the Butler County Genealogical Society Bylaws as amended at the last meeting. Ginny Besterman seconded the motion, which carried with a unanimous vote. Other Genealogical News There will be a reunion held in Cumberland County for all persons with family roots within that county, called "Mother Cumberland". Pat has received information from the organizing body of this reunion stating that if we would like to man a table (to sell memberships or anything else) they would supply us one at no cost. Anyone interested in helping out with this venture, please contact Pat Collins. The State of Pennsylvania has changed their forms to request Death or Birth certificates. The new forms were made available to meeting attendees. It was noted that the state is rejecting any requests filed using the old forms. The Butler Area Public Library maintains an index of cards in the genealogy department of Butler County surnames being researched by various people. Genealogists from out of our area often check this card file to see if there is a contact person for a family they are researching. These cards were made available to anyone wishing to submit them. It was noted that you should complete one card for each surname you are researching in order for the information submitted to be accessed easily. Lou Eisler from the Butler Area Public Library stated that the library has recently received a wonderful donation of artifacts from several 'old time' Butler County residents. The donation includes newspapers from 1842-1872, letters and other documents from the early 19th century that all need to be microfilmed, cataloged and indexed. The library is now in the position that they require an Archival Clerk to assist with this project. Anyone interested should contact Luanne Eisler at the library. A good source of assistance, contacts and information is the Butler County Mailist available from Rootsweb.com. Subscribers to this mailist receive messages posted to the Butler County Rootsweb message board as email messages. There is no cost for this service. To subscribe, send an email to PABUTLER-L-request and the word "Subscribe" in the subject line. Type the word "Subscribe" also in the body of the email message, but nothing else. This email address IS case sensitive. If you have hit up against a brick wall in your research, you are encouraged to speak to Pat Collins for help. We are quickly developing a vast network of assistance for these areas. If you are stuck with a research problem, we may be able to help by brainstorming on the issue. Logo Contest We will hold a contest to come up with a logo for the Genealogical Society. Submissions must be received by the May 11th meeting and may be any size, color or design. Submissions will be collected and recreated so that all are of uniform size and quality and ready to be voted on at the June meeting. This logo will appear on all Butler County Genealogical Society letterhead, membership cards, newsletters and other printed documents. There are no rules or regulations just use your imagination. Share Time At each meeting we would like to open the floor to any member who is willing to share some of their genealogy collections with the group. Items shared can be anything from an interesting family line, ancestral documents, reference materials or family heirlooms and artifacts. A sign up sheet was provided so that anyone interested could select which meeting they would like to bring their items. At this meeting, Joyce and Curt Rauschenberger shared some of their collection, which included circa 1853 German Traveling papers, passport and circa 1872 original US Citizenship papers from one of Curt's ancestors. Pat Collins also brought other items from her collection, which included various heirlooms pertaining to the I.O.O.F. in which some of her ancestors were active, and also more of her E-Bay finds. Future Meetings Our next meeting will be held April 8th, 2003, at 7pm at the Butler County Historical Society's Heritage Center located at 119 West New Castle Street, in the lower level. Parking is available either on the street or in the bank lot next door (Do NOT block the drive in Mac machine!). Our April meeting program will be Mrs. Glenna Walters, Butler County Prothonotary. Mrs. Walters will be speaking on the types of records available in her office and what types of genealogical information can be gathered from those records. She will also be bringing along with her several US Naturalization indexes and record books. Conclusion This meeting was adjourned at 7:50pm and members were invited to socialize, browse the artifacts shared during the meeting or browse through the Heritage Center museum displays upstairs.
