Paula What is the age of the Jesse James from Muddy Creek Twp? I have several Jesse James in my tree. One was born Mar 13, 1818 and died Mar 14, 1885. He was the son of Otha (Otho) James. I'm pretty sure he was born in Armstrong Co but I don't have any record of where he lived when grown. Could this be the Jesse James in the Muddy Creek Twp census? I also have a Jesse James that was born Aug 6, 1847 (same year as the famous outlaw). He was the son of William James (brother of the Jesse James born in 1818). This Jesse (born in 1847) was supposed to have died in 1848 but there was a story in the family that he was the black sheep and that they just said he died when he was a baby. There was also a story in our family that the outlaw Jesse James did come to Butler to visit relatives. I don't have any proof of this. Pam

Would anyone out there happen to know if the census listing in the 1880 census for William Hoffman/ Harriet Hoffman, which has William listed as the sheriff, is the census for the Butler County prison? It has 12 or 13 individuals listed in this "household", all of which have different last names. Any ideas? If it is for the prison, how would you go about finding the records for one of the individuals listed? Thanks for your Help in Advance! Stacy Neff stacy16001@earthlink.net Why Wait? I could use a little help. A few years ago I was in contact (through this or a similar list) with a woman in Butler named "Sherry" who was working at updating a Collins Family History Book that was in the Butler Library. I would very much like to contact her again to discuss the status of her work, but emails to the old address bounce. Sherry, if you are on the list, I would appreciate it if you would contact me. Or if anyone else knows how I might contact Sherry, I would sure appreciate their letting me know. Thanks for any help. Dick Dahm < jrdgene@aol.com >
The May Butler County Pennsylvania Genealogical Society meeting will be held on Tuesday, May 13th beginning at 7pm at the Heritage Center museum, located at 119 West New Castle Street in Butler. Our program for this meeting will be a speaker from the LDS Family Resource Center library. They will provide us with great information on what types of microfilmed records are available, how to request and access these records and other methods of research. My apologies if you recieve this notice twice - I'm combining a couple different maillists. Hope to see you there! Joyce Rauschenberger Secretary

Hello Beth, Butler County has birth records from 1893 through 1905. They also have delayed birth records. Probably Allegheny County is about the same. I know they are not beyond 1905. My grandmother was born in 1896 in Allegheny County, but when I wrote for it they said it wasn't there. However, her nephew in Pittsburgh went there and found it for me. Her name was Elizabeth Augenstein and they had it Lizzie Augustine or something like that. Hi Tim, This Russell D. Johnston has to be the one. Even though his wife's first name is Ella her middle initial is M. which I am betting is for Matilda, plus the birth ages are correct. Sure wonder where on earth that Martin is living. Anyways, I sure appreciate you checking this out for me. Gloria -- I have checked Martin Spithaler in the Vet Hospital in Perryville, MD. He had not arrived at the time of the 1930 Census. Moving on to Mars Borough, I found many Johnstons, including the following couple (let me know if these are not yours, please): Russel D. Johnston, head household and homeowner (valued at $4200), also a proud owner of a radio. He does not live on a farm. He is a white male age 31, currently married and was first married at age 25. He has no advanced education but is able to read and write. He and both of his parents were Pennsylvania-born. English is spoken in his household. He is a house painter and is actively employed as such. Ella M. Johnston is Russel's wife and lives in the same house. She is a white female age 31, married first at age 25. She has no advanced education but can read and write. She and both parents were Pennsylvania-born.
