I had no idea any of that branch of my family ended up in the USA, and would love to know more. I sent her the info on the WW1 and WW2 draft cards. Could not find him in the SSI index tho I did find a obit on the Butler genealogy website that I think might be him Butler Area Public Library Obituary Index Obit Record Name: PORTER, William Mark Title: Extension: Nickname: Age: DOB: Locality: Butler Newspaper: Butler Eagle Date/Page: 8 Apr 1950 p2 Film #: 169 Since she lives in the UK could anyone reading this that lives in Butler look up this obit and send it to her please? I don't live in Butler or I would do this myself. I will send the person who does this for her her email address so it will go directly to her.... Thank you for any help Sharon swtx

Hello In your Courtney family is there a Joy Courtney? My grandmother told me she named my father...Courtney (first name) after her friend Joy Courtney. My fathers last name was Minehart and his father John Howard Minehart came from Butler and then went back to Butler after thier divorce. He lived at 123 American in Butler. My dad says they had something to do with a funeral home. I was only there one time and remember being asked if I wanted to go for a ride is the hearst. I passed too creepy at 13 years of age! LOL! I am just beginning those lines. Actually, I was unaware of a Porter line, so that is new to me. Would be interested to have know any info that you do have. Got an insecure site warning...Hmmm. Sorry, I never know how far "out" my contacts are...The (present) Butler Eagle [Butler, Butler County] underwent a number of name changes throughout the years: Daily Butler Eagle; the Sentinel; the Centinel. They are all Butler newspapers which have come and gone--and the WINNER IS!!-the Butler Eagle. The Historical Society and Geneaological Society were donated collections of old newspapers a few years back. As a fund raiser, they filmed all of those newspapers and then converted to CD's....Some of the newspapers are also on traditional micro film at the library. [I wish they would also do the same for the newspapers on file.] It would be especially helpful for people who are out of state. Even those not in county would find them helpful. Just my opinion. The townships of Butler shifted radically throughout the years. The actual boundaries of Butler COUNTY were finalized in 1800. The townships morphed from four to about 33 by 1894. Most of the references are "John Doe, of Middlesex" or "John Smith of Penn." This to differentiate between the names common. Within the references, you might have "Old Barney Stepps' wife" (which means there was a younger Barney Stepp living in the township. There is an awful lot of Butler material on-line. I would like to see more. But. The History of Butler County can be linked through Rootsweb. The Farm directory of 1918 is also available -DistantCousin-[no S] (really a phone book, not just farmers.) The BAPL--public library has indexes of obituaries available. And also accessible are the wills/abstracts available to order from the library. Nearby, Lawrence County indexes deaths and marriages through the NCPL (New Castle Public Library.) I did notice a number of BARTLEY and BARKLEY families today as I was browsing Middlesex and Clinton Twps. 1860 and 1870 Censuses. That's the nutshell! Good luck.
