I recently visited St. Peter Cemetery in Butler looking for the grave of my ancestor Conrad Hunkele/Hungley who died in 1865. I was not successful because many of the grave markers for that period are damaged or unreadable and the custodian had no record of his grave even though the Pittsburgh Diocese records show him as buried from this parish. I did notice that there are some graves from this time that are marked with an iron cross that has two horizontal members - one that is flat and perpindicular to the vertical member as in a regular cross and one below it that is at an angle to the vertical member. Does anyone know why these crosses were made like this? Mark _________________________________________________________________ Discover sweet stuff waiting for you at the Messenger Cafe. Dear Listers - I am totally overwhelmed by the response I have received to my plaintive little request. I know that genealogists are helpful people but I could not have dreamt what would have come my way. Maps, newspapers entries, census entries (they were listed as Keepworth on the 1880 census which is why I could not find them), burials, obituaries, wills etc - certainly enough to advance me a huge amount in my quest for the Hepworths. I now know that Samuel's granddaughter Nellie married Calvin Y. NOBLE and I am tracking this family. Nellie was possibly Calvin's second wife as he was 20 years older than she was. Samuel's daughter Emma (Emily?) appears to have married a RITCHIE (and died in Florence, PA) in 1904, and I will chase up this family. However, I would still be delighted to receive any further info. on any of these (or related) families. I must specially thank the following for taking the time to do some research and providing me with information. Ron McKinney James Hindman - these two are (separately) distant connections of the Nobles. Coincidentally James had been in Palmerston North in 2005. Louise Stanzione who did heaps of research, and not least the the Butler County Historical Society who were also extremely helpful (and have sent me the Hepworth wills). You are wonderful people. I will no doubt be back to the list still seeking to find a blood relative (who would be my 3rd cousin). I work as a volunteer at both our local Family History Centre and the genealogy section of our local city library. If any one on the list needs any New Zealand research done it would be my great pleasure to try to repay your efforts on my behalf. Just e-mail me. With many thanks Joan Barnes Palmerston North New Zealand
Listers, I've written privately to the Hepworth researcher, but thought I'd share what I found today: In the Freeport Cemetery: Amelia Hepworth, no death date, no place of birth, place of residence = Freeport, was 18 years old at death, buried in Sect E-29. Mary Hepworth, 11 years old, all else ditto above. Mina E. Hepworth, 21 years old, ditto above. Thomas B. Hepworth, 9 years old, d.o.d.Sept 2, 1870, all else ditto above. Samuel Hepworth, death date Aug 18, 1889, born England, died in Buffalo Township, 74 years old age at death, cancer of stomach, buried in Section E-28. Sarah Hepworth, d.o.d. Mar 16, 1884, Born England, died in Buffalo Township, 62 years old at death, apoplexy, buried in Sect E-28. In the Armstrong County Will Book Index: Samuel Hepworth, residence Buffalo Township, Butler County, 1900, Volume 6, p.146, estate #6186-B. >From the Freeport Journal. Nov 20, 1877: William Ritchie and Emily Hepworth married. Mar 16, 1884 Mrs. Sarah Hepworth died. May 3, 1887: Samuel Hepworth and Mrs. Margaret Barnett married. Aug 18, 1889: Samuel Hepworth died, age 74y. Nov 30, 1892: George W. Wold and Mrs. Margaret Hepworth married. Nov 26, 1904: Mrs. Emma Hepworth Ritchie died in Florence, PA, age 54y. Feb 27, 1905: H. Brenneman & Son bought the Hepworth farm in Buffalo Township for $3000. >From "History of Armstrong County Pennsylvania" by Robert Walter Smith, Esq, published 1883 by Waterman, Watkins & C0, Chicago. Pages 415 and 432 have to do with the Hepworth farm land purchases. The one I find significant is p.432 where it describes the "Mount Joy" property formerly owned by the John and Massa Harbison family. Samuel Hepworth and L. Johnston purchased 52 and 50 acres respectively on the west side of the eastern bend in the Buffalo Creek, and James Patterson bought 18 acres on the east of the Buffalo Creek. It would not be unusual for someone living in Freeport to be buried in Buffalo Twp, Butler County, as Freeport is only a mile or so from Buffalo Twp. There was a Nellie HEPWORTH found in the IGI at familysearch.org, married to Calvin Y. NOBLE. The 1900 census shows her birth to be in Feb 1874. Calvin Y. Noble was a first cousin once removed of my grandmother. For a map of Freeport see http://www.mapquest.com/maps/. Back in 2002 someone referred to some documents concerning Robert Findley's estate and mentioned a Reverend Robert Y. Thompson of Kingsville Johnson Co MO in reference to the heirs. in the same message mention was again made about the Reverend Robert Y. Thompson signing a deed to a Mr. Painter in behalf of Elizabeth Thompson who was Robert Findley's sister. The Reverend Robert Y. Thompson was actually Reverend Robert Graham Thompson, Elizabeth Findley Thompson's son. I wonder if anyone has any knowledge regarding these documents or the time frame in which they appeared in the deed books of Butler Co. Barbara

I did notice on the SSDI record on Family Search, she was listed as living in the VA hospital in PA, so her husband probably served in WWI? Also, have you found an obit for Stella's parents? I came across that somewhere many years ago. You have solved the mystery of Loring studying with his brother-in-law for me also. I'm sure that Laura is a step sister. I have a lot of material that will be of interest to you on the Lusk's and Adams. I'm sure that you know that Dianthe was married to John Brown. We must share information and perhaps get together as I live in Fountain Hills, AZ. I stayed overnight in Albuquerque on our way back East in June. I spent time in many place were the Lusk's were on this trip. I was in Mercer, PA where Loring's wife was from, Harmony, PA were Loring and Mary are buried and parts of Ohio where the family lived.
