Author: N_Updegraph Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.butler/9155.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I know nothing about the Clarks you listed but I may be connected. My Updegraffs lived in Worth/Muddycreek/Franklin Township area and attended the "Upper Zion" church on the shore of the lake just north of Prospect and later the "Lower Zion" Zion Baptist Church near Coopers Lake. William and Elizabeth Updegraff are buried there at Lower Zion. They lived on Church Road, and, roughly speaking, they were between Upper and Lower Zion. Their son donated farm land for a Church of God and cemetery on Church Road. Only the cemetery is there now. William and Liz's daughter Catherine b. 1834, d. 1921 married ROBERT J. CLARK. I do not have his birth date but per the 1850 and 1860 census of Slippery Rock Township, Lawrence County, he must have been born circa 1820. He died Feb. 18, 1863 is some tragic fashion (relatively young), I 'm told in Butler Co. but the estate papers were in Lawrence Co. I forget if it was a farming accident or illness. His wife and kids moved into New Castle, Lawrence Co. On the 1860 census an ELIZABETH CLARK, age 77, so born about 1783, is living with Robert J. and family. Maybe his mother? Let me know if you see any connection to your line. I have his wife's ancestors and his kids but nothing about him. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: IanZaenger Surnames: McKee, Martin, Tennille Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.butler/9180.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thank you very much for checking these resources. I don't think the William P McKee you mention is the one I am looking for, however. I see in the 1880 census that there ia a William P McKee in Clinton Twp., Venango county; also in the oil business, so maybe that explains the explosion. Yes, it is possible that Martha moved out of state with one of her children. I am attempting to confirm the marriages of her two older daughters. I believe the oldest daughter, Laura (or Lora) married to William M. Martin. They had four daughters between 1876 and 1888. In 1900 they are in Findlay, Hancock county, Ohio; in 1910 they are in Vincennes, Knox county, Indiana, William taking part in the early years of the oil business. It looks like the next younger sister, Charlotte E(lvira?) married to William M. Martin's younger brother Albert. In 1900 their family is also in Findlay, Ohio and in the oil business. By 1910 it seems Albert has died, and Charlotte is with her daughter Edith (Martin) Tennille's family in Montgomery, Alabama. It's amystery to me how Edith Martin hooked up with Frank Tennille from Alabama. It seems the next younger sister, Mary Alice (usually just called Alice) may not have married. She was enumerated with her younger brother Walter's family in 1900 in Wood county, Ohio and with another younger brother, Frank G., in 1910 in Vincennes, Indiana (he was also in the oil business). The oldest brother William I. McKee was mostly in Butler, PA, though in 1900 he is in Sherwood, Defiance county, Ohio; he was a railroad agent. I haven't found any mention of Martha Ann with any of her children in the 1900 census, and I have all of them except for her youngest son, Clarence, born about 1872, who I also haven't found later than the 1880 census. I think the two older daughters may have been married in Venango county. Son William I. may have married in Beaver or Butler county, and son Walter may have married in Wood county, Ohio. I am currently waiting for obits or dc's through the mail for several of these folk. Are there marriage records to be found in Butler or Venango county for the 1870-1900 time frame? Coverage seems limited and not much is on microfilm of county records. Do you think church records might exist and be available, even if not filmed? I checked the death records at the Court House. A William P. McKee died in 1895 in Scrubgrass Twp in an explosion but the newspaper for that date did not survive. Could it be that Martha moved out of state with one of her children?. I found her, as you stated, in the 1880 fairview census living with 5 children. There are other Mckees' in this census. Did any of the children get married in Butler Co. ? If so there would be a record. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: IanZaenger Surnames: McKee, Fisher Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.butler/9180/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I believe that I have a good handle on most of the history of William and his children with Martha Ann Fisher. After Robert Hoge McKee died in 1851 (family at that time residing in Beaver County, PA), in 1860 William and family were in New Sewickley Twp., Beaver County; in 1870 in Franklin, Venango County; in 1880 Martha is in Fairview Twp., Butler County with her younger children. William presumably died prior to the 1880 census, though one McKee source gives his year of death as 1881. I am not able to find Martha in the 1900 census. By then her children have scattered to Hancock County, Ohio (and later in Montgomery, Alabama), Wood County, Ohio and Vincennes (Knox County), Indiana. So I am trying to nail down the when and where for the death and burial of William and Martha Ann. Their names do not show up in the Butler County, PA online obit index. I have also not been able to find them in the Butler or Venango County probate records. Does anyone have a suggestion for other resources to have a look at??
