See if there are estate papers for the families. And consider ordering them from the library. And. Believe it or not, fathering illegitimate children was, in some cases, a matter of public record--and child support demanded and collected through the county. So, check the index of the News of the Day CD's for surnames of named families. Good luck. Fascinating, isn't it, that our ancestors had as many foibles as we do... I don't know if you would be able to find anything in the Butler Library's genealogy room. You can email them at baplgenealogy at bcfls dot org. Due to the nature of "the scandal", you probably won't find anything in a baptismal record... and if one does exist, it probably won't list the birth parents' names. Author: Metromane Surnames: Schultz, Franck Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.butler/9333/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have always been told by my father of the scandal involving my great-great grandparents. The story has many, many versions, none of which fully make sense and I would love to finally unravel the truth. Here is the gist of it: Adam Schultz married Magdalena Franck in Butler county in 1879. They are listed in the 1900 census with their 'adopted son' Carl Adam Schultz. The basis of the scandal is that Carl is really the son of Magdalena's younger sister Charlotta and her husband Adam. This could be true, but I believe that Charlotta might also have simply had a baby out of wedlock and gave it to her sister to raise. Charlotta is 18 in the 1880 census and working as a servent for John and Clara Walter. Could the baby be John Walters? Or anyone elses for that matter? I might not be of the Schultz line after all. Do any birth records exist for September of 1884, when Carl was born? I am guessing there might not have ever been a formal adoption, but maybe, just maybe, there is a record somewhere. If anyone has any tips or info, I'd love to hear them! Thanks, Kathy Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I did know he enlisted in PA and, from the PA archives, got the regt & co. he served in. Seems like you have quite a bit of info to give them, so I'd just go to the NARA site and give them whatever info you have. I think that since you have name, dates in & out and ships he served on ought to give them a good start in tracking him down. Have you looked in 1860 census & other pre-CW ones to see if you could find him? Not to confuse the issue but I'm about to order records for a gr-gr-uncle that I just recently discovered was killed in 1862, I think maybe at Harpers Ferry. He was in Patterson's militia and, in researching that group, found that he enlisted at Allegheny City BUT the group was first sent to the 1st VA cavalry and then on to the 1st MD cavalry, so he is actually shown as being from MD in the Find A Grave records! Also, troops were not necessarily mustered out where they enlisted. Gr-gfather enlisted in Pgh., mustered out in Nashville TN. Just wanted to share my first experience with NARA. On 6/4, I ordered, on line, my gr-gfather's civil war records. I was able to give them some info, name & unit & co from his enrollment card which I found on PA archives. On 6/22, I they were delivered. Copies are great, everything is easily read, got enlistment and muster out papers, physical description, what he was paid, etc. Even has a note he was owed $1.00 bounty for bringing his own gun. I have also recently discovered a gr-gr-uncle who was killed in 1862, probably at Harper's Ferry, and will be ordering his records as well. BTW, I even found that he is buried at Soldier's Home Natl. Cemetery in Wash DC thru Find A Grave. Am still waiting the results on the request and search for my father's WWII records which could possibly have been destroyed in the St. Louis fire but I sure hope not! So far, I'm very pleased with NARA's response. Pat/Boise _________________________________________________________________ Lauren found her dream laptop. I apologize. I'm fairly certain we're related. Giovanna DeSanctis was my great grandmother. My grandmother Esther (one of her daughters) married Angelo Angeloni in Butler PA. Giovanna was a widow who emigrated to American with all her children after her eldest son John had emigrated to Butler first. My great Aunt Angela (your grandmother?) was Esther's sister. The book by Francis DeSanctis (my uncle Checco) mentions my father, uncle and aunt. Altho Francis was probably my third or fourth cousin, we always called him Uncle. His wife was sister to my father's oldest brother's wife. (Boy these relationships can get complicated!) Anyway, I would love to hear from you or any other famiglia out there.
