We are all different that's for sure, all unique simply by the uniqueness of the membership that makes it up, but at least we are all the same when it comes to a decission during MM! :) Would love to attend an unplanned meeting for the experience. 3 years ago, when my father was dying, I went to my old childhood church (not Quaker), I was bowled over by all the noise. I was sure missing my Quite Worship time. Was glad to get back home when I was able. From what I understand there were 3 splits Hicksite was the first. Hicksite kept same kind of records and within the IYM area, those are housed Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting Archives at Wilmington College a few at Earlham College, I asked Tom Hamm the custodian of IYM about that not long ago. But in the Heiss abstracts done for the Quaker Encyclopedias have the Hicksite info in them. ">>> Andrea, >>> Here's a reply for you to pass along. In 1827-1828 American Quakers >>> split into Hicksite and Orthodox groups. Hicksite Friends considered >>> themselves to be Friends just as much as the Orthodox, and continued >>> to keep exactly the same sorts of records. >>> In the 1840s and 1850s a group of radical reformers who called >>> themselves Congegational or Progressive Friends split from the main >>> Hicksite group. Their records are spotty, partly because they didn't >>> last long, partly because they had a theological aversion to record >>> keeping. >>> TH" 14th, 9th month, 2006 - Tom Hamm But the other two splits I am not sure about. I will have to do some digging, it's been a few months, I have Max Carter of Guilford College, on video tape talking about it, so I will watch it again and see what he says. I have posted to my local Rootsweb a list of Quaker Record Abb. on 10-21,2006 at INRANDOL if anyone would need those. It is interesting that even within the Quaker faith there is so much variation in worship styles. My understanding is the old records are also separated by which meetings split and followed the Hicksite or the other branch (not thinking of it at the moment). Best wishes,
I thought there had been a Kiethian split also, ca 1695-1700, due to the influence of Kevin Kieth. But maybe that was only very local to Quakers who had come to Radnor Township. Liz J
