    1. [PABUCKS-L] Watson BEWLEY
    2. L. Klein
    3. Hello everyone. I'm new to this list and have subscribed only to help a friend in England figure out what happened to his ancestor. Watson BEWLEY was in Carlisle, Cumberland, England, during the census of 1851. He served in the Civil War in 1863 with the 3rd Pennsylvania Reserve Infantry. A Watson BEWLEY then appears in the 1870 census, Newtown Borough, Bucks County, PA, roll 1314, page 453 and we are assuming (yes, I know!) that this is the same man. What steps would you recommend I take to find out more about dear old Watson? I understand that the LDS would have the census films. Is there also a copy of them in Doylestown? Would be grateful for any advice on how to locate more information about this man. I just moved to Bucks County and would like to use local resources, if possible, but don't know what those resources might be. TIA!

    3. Posted on: Bucks Co. Pa Query Form Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/Bucks/14660 Surname: Graham, Vandermark, Postal, Brink, Smith, Fulham, Clyne, Willard, Walker ------------------------- I am looking for James GRAHAM, who settled near Tioga Point, on the Chemung Branch of the Susquehanna River, which I believe may be in Chemung County, New York? He was probably born in 1749 in Bucks County, PA. He worked for a Doctor in New York City where he probably met and married Maria VanderMark. He enlisted into the service from Northampton County, PA, (Revolutionary Army for one year, April 15, 1777 to April 15, 1778). He was in Captain's Hewett's Company, which was in Colonel Dennison's Regiment of the Connecticut Militia. This Regiment was in the battle of Wyoming, where his Captain was killed. After this, he was attached to Captain's Spaulding's company, and Colonel Butler's Regiment. He was the son of the Scotch Covenanter, WILLIAM GRAHAM, who came with the Ulster Presbyterians. . They had accepted an invitation from William Penn to settle at Beminister in about 1741. He left this area in 1810 and moved to Canada. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you.

    1. [PABUCKS-L] Grand Army of the Republic (GAR)
    2. Morrow
    3. The Grand Army of the Republic was open only to those who served in the Union forces during the Civil War. It died out with its members. There is a national GAR museum in Philadelphia's Frankford section. Their web site: http://suvcw.org/garmus.htm Many GAR chapters did not keep good records, but local libraries and historical societies have often become the repositories for such records as remain. There are several organizations for those with ancestral ties to the Civil War. Most require at least minimal documentation of lineage to validate membership. Among them: Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War http://suvcw.org/home.htm Sons of Confederate Veterans http://www.scv.org/ United Daughters of the Confederacy http://www.hqudc.org/ Duncan Morrow

    1. Re: [PABUCKS-L] G.A.R. Post 145 PA
    2. There is not a GAR Post in existence today; I doubt that one existed fifty years ago. The Grand Army of the Republic posts were comprised of Union War Veterans, and their female auxiliary was called the Women's Relief Corps. Most of them disbanded by the 20s, and their records are often found deposited in various State Historical Societies. Albert Woolson, 106, was the last Civil War vet, and he died about 1952 or so. The last so-called rebel vet, Walter Washington Williams, 114, was a fake and died about the same time. He was from Texas. I think the southern folks yet cling to United Confederate Veterans (UCV) or something like that and the Daughters of the Confederacy is some social club of varying fabric--rarely doing much more than an occasional dedication or tea, not much of genealogical concern. Little genealogy information is to be found amongst the GAR records. Their final decades consisted mostly of reunions of vets, patriotic speeches, and passing out of ribbons highly collected today. I never heard of them having stags, turkey shoots, nut feeds, game dinners, or lodge halls like their later successors have. Their counterpart today is the American Legion, the VFW, Amvets, etc. and they are mostly fighting for their existence due to the shortage of vets plus the aversion of the kids of today to join anything or give of their time for any type of philanthropy.
