My email to raspberry5@webtv.net failed. I replied to the comments about Hoffman--Bucks Co. and Buffalo Bill Cody. I have some data that I believe this person would be interested in. Joyce
Janice, Did you ever find anything on Thomas Hirst and his family? I have some information about his wife and children and their descendants. My grandmother was born a Hirst and was a granddaughter of Thomas Alpheus Hirst, one of Thomas and Dorothea's sons. I'd love to hear from you. Lyn
Sorry, I respectfully disagree. There is no free lunch. Whatever the processing of the application, making the copy, etc., costs the SSA should be paid by those of us who order the documents. We should not expect other taxpayers to subsidize our hobby. As one who ran a single-practitioner office for 40 years I have some knowledge of the costs of such processing and mailing, and it has got to be more than the $7.00 the SSA has been charging. If I use the service, I should be willing to pay for it -- and be thanking that I live in a country where I have access to such information. When we protest against legitimate charges like this, we weaken our voices when we find it necessary to protect against important matters. Hi listers, Below is a letter my cousin sent to her Senators and Representatives. I think it is pretty good and thought I would pass it along. Kathy "Kath" (Burden) Shaffer Omaha, NE «¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»§«¤»¥«¤»¥«¤»§«¤» I have been doing genealogical research for many years and was extremely upset to hear that the Social Security Administration has proposed to increase the fee for providing copies of SSDI files from $7.00 to $27.00. I'm sure that the new innovations in Internet technology and the increased interest in the hobby of genealogy have increased the demand for these services but to raise the fees 283% seems extremely high. The Freedom of Information Act was intended to allow the American public access to governmental records. This increase seems intended to discourage the exercise of those rights. Most people involved in genealogy research are older Americans on a fixed income and an increase of this amount would prove to be a financial burden. As the "Baby Boomers" make the gradual transition to senior citizens, I'm sure the number of people involved with genealogy research will increase proportionately. A number of state governments have recognized the public's interest in genealogy and made many of their records available through the Internet at little or no charge to the public. They believe that citizens have a right to access these records and feel they are providing a public service by bringing them online. Certainly there are more important issues to deal with than an increase in fees for Social Security Death Records but, to those of us involved in this wonderful hobby, this disproportionate increase will have a daunting effect. I thank you for taking the time to consider this matter and I look forward to your response.
Searching for information on the household of William D. Smith (b. 1805). The 1850-1870 US Censuses show that his wife's name was Catherine (b. 1828) and the children were Andrew Jackson (b. 1846), Thomas Ross (b. 1849), Amanda (b. 1851), Sarah (b. 1853), William Henry (b. 1855) and George B. (b. 1863). They lived the majority of the time in Doylestown. The birth dates are approximate. Any information would be most appreciated.

Quakers did not use names of months and days. And in dates before 12 Sept 1752, you have to add 2 months to make it fit with our current calender. inspite of the fact that the new year did not start until 25 Mar, the entire month of March was "1st month" Beware of this discrepancy in other records! I have even had to correct info from the LDS once I have looked at originals! Hi List, I am new to the use of old Quaker records, specifically those of the Welsh communities in PA. When the Quakers recorded a date as 5, 8th month, 1700, did they mean 5 August or 5 October? (If they were English colonists, I'd know the answer, but the Welsh, and the Quakers, have a reputation for going their own way!) Thanks for your help. Rick Sherman Kensington, CA
Donna, there were 2 SMITH Quaker families in Bucks Co: Robert SMITH + Phebe CANBY in Buckingham William SMITH + (1) Mary CROASDALE and + (2) Mary ??? in Wrightstown I descend from each too many times, and in each family I have the BLAKER name, but I don't have the ones you are looking for. But I would suggest trying to get ahold of the microfilms for Buckingham and Wrightstown Monthly Meetings, as I am sure there may be references to your family in one of these. The migration path you mention sounds typical of some of my Quaker cousins who left Bucks Co in that time period. Good luck! My g grandfather was William Smith Blaker. His father Enoch Blaker. WS Blaker had a brother named Pierson. I can't help but wonder since many of the names are repeated. I am having trouble finding Enoch's parent's names. Only know he was born in 1818 in PA and lived there until after 1846. Then to OH 1850 census. Then to IOWA 1860 census. Yes. Some can be found typed up at the Spruance Library in Doylestown, but not all. The rest are microfilmed. They are at the Swathmore College Friends Historical Library at Swathmore, Pa (on I-476). These microfilms should be available from your local LDS library as well. I am currently trying to research my grandfathers family with no luck. Would you be able to help in anyway? thank you Bridget Coyle Bridget Coyle (myself) – Hazel Darleen (Black) Houghton (mother) and Harry Alfred Houghton – Walter W. Black (grandfather) and Lena M (Mackel) Black (grandmother) – Thaddeus W. Black (ggrandfather) and Anna V. (Smay) (ggrandmother) – Adam Black (gggrandfather) and possibly Delilah (gggrandmother) (or maybe Delia – no last name) I am seeking information on Thaddeus W. Black, born in Pulaski, PA (could have been Mercer county or Lawrence) about 1844, married to Anna V. Smay in 1891 on August 11, died in April 1933 in or around Texas City, TX. (buried in desert outside of Texas City so our family story goes) AND/OR Adam Black, also from Pulaski, PA no other information available. Thaddeus left Pennsylvania for TX in 1900 after his wife Anna died from typhoid pneumonia. Walter was only 2 years old so he left him with an aunt named Mary (Smay) Mangus and took Walters sister Thannet (or Thanet) along to Texas. Thannet in turn married a man named Fred Hassler and had two daughters, one named Naomi and the other possibly also Thannet (family referred to her as little Thannet). Naomi in turn married a man named Odell Norris. If anyone has any information on this line please let meknow.
Does anyone know if there are any Quaker records of Middletown,PA. during and before the year of 1734. I have a grandfather, John Wharton/Warton that arrived in Falls in 1734 with a certificate from Middletown. I have looked for 17 years for these records. Are there any? Carol Wharton.

Thanks for letting me know about the mistake. This just came with some more addresses so sending it out again. I wrote that the hobby was a fast growing one that was giving many more people pride in their country and ancestors and how much history we were learning and that this was our last resort in many cases to learn maiden names of women. Also emphasized what a handicap it was to so many of the new friends I have made who are housebound and on low budgets and that this will greatly decrease their ability to participate in their new found friendships and hobby. For those not knowing. President was spelled wrong in the one I sent before so unless you retyped it it bounced.
