Many Civil War units, on both sides, wore the uniforms of the French Zoaves and they were thus called Zoaves. They were usually elite troops. However, as the war went on, they discarded those uniforms in combat because they made such good targets. >From History of Bucks County: It is impossible to say who was the first settler in Buckingham ... but it could not have been more than a year or two after John Chapman had seated himself in the woods of Wrightstown. ... They were mostly members of Falls meeting, and it is said that some of them walked all the way down there to attend meetings, before they had permission to hold them in Buckingham. ... Among the original settlers [was] Daniel Jackson. I have a Mary Jackson who married John Watson 1779 - I have a lead from an early biography that she was a descendant of "Dan'l Jackson who settled Bristol about 1698." He married Hannah Baynes about 1698. Interested in any research done on this line.
Thanks for the reply. Are you related to the Shattos of Sullivan Co.? I know they descend from Daniel Shatto who was born in Pa. about 1782 and married Catherine Stitle, also of Pa. I'm not a Shatto descendent, but they intermarried with my Sterlings out in Sullivan, and we spent about a year documenting the genealogy of the (Scotch) Irish Settlement west of Milan, of which the Shatto family became pretty much a part of.

It's bordered on the townships of Bristol to the South, Newtown and Northampton to the North, Lower Makefield and Falls to the East, and Lower Southampton and Bensalem to the West. In your great Grandfather's time, it was a bucolic farming area with cottages along the Neshaminy Creek for Summering Philadelphians. In Parkland there was a Revival Meeting House, where people came from miles around including Philadelphia and New Jersey to attend the religious meetings.
